Top Local Tips for Lake Tahoe

gondola at heavenly village The gondola was simply great for getting up into the mountain. What we didnt know is that the only way back down to heavenly village is on the gondola. So if the gondola closes because of high winds, you have to go to one of the other lodges and catch a bus back to heavenly village (buses only leave on the hour). Fortunately we got lucky, but a good part of the day I worried whether we were going to make it back or not and wondered how much time out of our day would be spent waiting and taking the bus.

See the Lake If not in snow season, MUST take a day to drive around the lake. Such a variety of scenery and activities. Buy the State Park permits and see the beaches and mansions. Take a paddle wheeler tour of the lake or the evening dinner cruise to see the lake shore from the lake. Take the trolley ride in South Lake Taheo and learn about the area and see more places. Take a day trip to Carson City and another to Virginia City to learn more about the silver and gold mining that made the area famous. If you are a mountain biker - this is the place. If you want a peaceful place, you can find it here, too.

Fallen Leaf Lake Get away from the Tahoe madness and enjoy this spectacularly beautiful lake. Not much in the way of hiking paths but a great place for sitting on the public beach, reading a book, and drinking in the view. Nice camp store/deli for lunch. And the best t-shirts in Tahoe. Good place for summer kayak and boat rentals. Because the lake is smaller than Tahoe, it is more scenic. Basically a one-way road in with pullouts. Lots of gucchi cabins in the area but they don't detract too much from the scenery.
