Grand Colonial - A Perfect Match!
from A TripAdvisor MemberTake advantage of the quality food at the Nine Ten restaurant ... we had a B&B package and ate breakfast at the sidewalk tables both days and a lunch with our daughter, who is a culinary school student interning at a five star restaurant, was judged as excellent by us all.
We would definitely return. We searched a number of properties on the internet before going and as we saw them on our walks around town... we only confirmed that the choice we made was the BEST!
Fab-u-lous
from MarisaOCWONDERFUL PLACE TO STAY
from A TripAdvisor Membercleaning staff were just wonderful. Our room had a beautiful ocean view and it was great to sleep with the windows open and listen to the ocean waves each night. The grounds and the pool are very nicely landscaped and it is a very peaceful, relaxing place to stay. Also, the Nine Ten Restaurant is very nice. The food is wonderful and the service cannot be beat. I will definitely stay here again!
Grande Colonial Rules!!!!
from travelcrazyThe suite was tastefully decorated with ample counter space in the vanity area, 2 sinks, refridgerator, large closet, luxurious robes, comfortable front room, free bottled water, aveda bath products, the most comfortable king bed with soft down filled duvet, and a nice oceanview. We loved this room.
Breakfast at their restaurant - Nine Ten was also wonderful and the service impeccable!! After breakfast my husband went surfing and the valets were always so prompt at retrieving our vehicle. We used the in-and-out privilege numerous times during our stay with barely a wait every time. I opted to go Christmas shopping. I stopped at the front desk and they cheerfully showed me on a map which way to head to give my credit cards a workout!
We had drinks at the bar before heading out to dinner and the service was also awesome. Kudos to the bar tender who mixed my martinis!!
Everything was wonderful at the Grande Colonial. We have stayed down the street at the other beach side hotel and we much prefer this hotel. We will definitely be back and tell all our friends!!
Loved the Grande Colonial
from DebbieBaltThe service was excellent - valet guys, front desk, and cleaning people - everyone was friendly, efficient, and eager to please. Secondly, if you want to stay right in town, the location is great. It is located on Prospect Street, among all the shops and restaurants, and is only a few minute walk to the ocean. The room was bigger than we expected, nicely decorated, the bed was very comfortable, and everything was VERY CLEAN.
We did not pay extra for an oceanview room, but we didn't mind at all. Our room was on the 5th floor (corner room), streetside, and had a nice view of town with a slight oceanview. The daytime street traffic was a little noisy, but we didn't spend much time in the room during the day anyway. At night, we couldn't really hear the street traffic at all (kept the windows closed).
A couple of things to point out ... the bathroom was pretty small (nowhere to really spread out and put your stuff) and the shower head is low (a problem for my husband but not me). But this didn't really bother us since we enjoyed everything else about the hotel. Also, it costs $15 per night to valet park your car (unlimited access). If you are money conscious and won't be needing your car often, I saw a garage around the corner (make a left at Hard Rock Hotel) that charged $4 per day.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Grande Colonial and didn't see any other hotels that we would have preferred. If you favor contemporary decor, then you probably won't appreciate the decor of this old style hotel. We really liked it.
PS- I got a very good rate on expedia, so you may want to try there. I called the hotel and they matched the rate.
The Grande Colonial Surpassed All Expectations
from A TripAdvisor MemberEvery aspect of our wedding and interaction with the hotel was an absolute pleasure. Desiree Ruiz, the Catering Sales Manager, went above and beyond her duties in every capacity and made the entire experience from beginning to end a memorable one.
The wait staff was courteous, the bartenders were professional, the valets were impeccable and the room was delightful.
Every guest at our wedding was blown away by the professionalism and hospitality of the hotel staff - guests commented that it was the most incredible hotel and a perfect location for a wedding.
If you are looking for a wonderful weekend in a hotel that will make you feel incredibly special - The Grande Colonial should be your first choice.
Good location, friendly staff, worth the money
from nyctravelerWe ate at George's on the Cove, not as expensive as I thought but not worth the money. We had lunch there and with the exception of the view nothing out of this world.
If you are in San Diego, make the effort to got to Laguna Beach... its amazing. Check out Brisas, fabulous view and great nouveau Mexican view... do go around sunset... you will be in awe.
If you decide to do the zoo, make sure you go later in the afternoon when the animals are up, we went in the morning and all the animals, at least most of them were sleeping and all we saw were a lot of empty cages. Its also better going in the afternoon when its not as hot and more comfortable getting around.
In San Diego, make sure you go to Tapenade in La Jolla, we had a fabulous dinner there, its not cheap but worth the money.
I didn't give the Grande Colonial and "excellent" review because I found the bathrooms in need of a little maintenance. The shower head is postioned very low so if you're above 5'5" you might find it a little uncomfortable taking a shower and the shower is not removable so its not like you can change the position of the head. I also saw some of the tiles needed replacement. But the rooms were all very clean.
On last note, we requested a late check out and they were very kind to let us have the room till 2pm, even though they were fully booked that night - that was a big plus for us since check out was orginally at 12.
I would definetly go back to La Jolla and stay at the Colonial. I thought of staying in Coronado, glad we didn't, not much to do there. La Jolla is some where in the middle and easy to get to and from other areas in San Diego.
Heaven
from A TripAdvisor MemberGreat, great, great!!!
from A TripAdvisor Membervery nice place.
from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for La Jolla
Beaches I would recommend to make the trek to Mission Beach. It's much larger than those closer to Prospect Street, and there are fun shops and places to eat.
Too many choices WE had a hard time deciding where to eat. Wish we could have stayed longer to try some of the other spots in the area. We LOVED Nine-Ten at The Grande Colonial. It was pricey but delicious. The bar is a busy spot in the evenings. We ate at Alfonso's Mexican restaurant. It is a people watching spot with average food. Carne Asada was very good, though. Pasquales (?) Italian had nice food, but no view. The waiter was a little surly and pushy. Cody's and the Living Room Coffee House were great spots for breakfast. The Valencia Hotel restaurants are all lovely and had delicious lunch fare.
Surf Diva If you are a girl and want to learn to surf, I would highly recommend Surf Divas. The instructors were awesome and very uninitimidating. All three of us were able to stand and surf on our first lesson
