Rock And M********n' Roll!

Tommy Lee, ex-Motley Crue drummer and Pammy handler extraordinaire, appears at the entrance to the bar. Soused on the Standard's fabulous mojitos, I approach, hoping for a handshake from the slightly paranoid looking mayhem guru. I get one. Later my client's girlfriend disrobes in the bar. There's a semi-naked woman in a glass case behind reception. Blue astroturf round the pool. If this is the kind of thing that you look for in a hotel then I urge you to spend a couple of nights at the Standard. The rooms themselves are slightly tatty and the staff have a tendency towards the surly, which is why I've docked a point. But even the pencils are cool at the Standard.

Scene on the Strip

The Standard is definately a good, inexpensive, hotel to stay at if you're looking for a scene. I'd recommend it most for hip, trendy people in their 20-early 30s. Some things seem a little tacky like the girls in their underwear in the glass box behind the front desk but its all fun. The rooms are nice but kinda plain.

We stay here every year for our sales meetings. Since I work with only men I dont have this problem since I stay alone, but none of the guys liked the open bathrooms they had to share with each other. Other than that the view from the roof top bar is great, it is really for the 20 somethings crowd. It would be a great place for a couple to stay at.

not all that

from Korin
My wife & I stayed here Nov 20-23, 2003. The lobby was nicely decorated and hip. The "live art" behind the desk was really neat. Then we got to the room.... BARE MINIMUM..... that is all I can say. They cut corners everywhere they could. I expected a higher degree of finish even though the decor was suppose to be modern and hip. King bed, cd player, one broken phone, one good phone, tv, bean bag, one chair, and only 3 hangers in the closet. They did not have anywhere to eat the room service they so greatly bragged about, no pictures on the wall, and nothing that gave the extra touch that you would expect for the money you will pay. Now for the worse part. The hotel is very loud! You may as well party until 2 or 3 in the morning becasue you will be kept awake anyway. It was loud every night. THEY ALMOST GOT THIS HOTEL RIGHT.

Been there, Done that

Working in the advertising/media world, I've stayed at a lot of hip and luxurious hotels. The Standard is definitely not luxurious and questionably 'hip.' However, if you are looking for a scene -- you've found it. Definitely not for anyone who plans on spending time in your hotel room. The rooms smell and are less 'minimalist' and more like Ikea. I cut my stay short and found a comfortable space.

t as cool as the lobby

The standard hotel is a really good place to see the hollywood scene.
The rooms are definitely not nice, though. The bed was very uncomfortable. The bathroom had linolium floors, and was bubbling up in spots. My tv didn't work. I would visit the bar, but stay somewhere else. The argyle around the corner has similarly priced rooms that are much, much nicer.

The Standard for young and trendy party people

Perfect place for the under 30 crowd.... very trendy and in a great location. The staff is great- I was blown away by how freindly the staff was. The bar is a little pricey, but no worse than anywhere else in on the strip, plus if you are a guest in the hotel you get the VIP treatment in the bar area. This hotel was actually recommended by a hollywood local and I would recommend it to anyone else in my age bracket. This is definitely not the place for familes or couples looking for a romantic getaway, it is merely a trendy place to chill by the pool and party at night, so I wouldn't expect much else.

What is that smell?

I stayed at The Standard hotel in West Hollywood for two nights before the 4th of July weekend. I would have checked-out and left the hotel only if I havent prepaid for the room. The corner room that I got was somewhat quiet BUT there was this constant mildew or fecal smell. The $15 aromatherapy candle from the mini-bar didn't help! The staff members were ok; the chambermaid who cleaned our room was really nice and tried to be helpful. However, all of valets who parked my rental Jag didn't care a bit about the car. I even tip them well. I rather park the car myself if I had that option! Thank god, it was not my own car!I really do have to agree with previous writer that said The Standard hotel is "really just a bar that has rooms to stay in if you're too drunk to go home." I'm going back to my regular Hilton and Westin.

Motel 6 for Hipsters

We stayed at what we will now refer to as the Sub-Standard in Hollywood, thinking it would be similar to a W hotel in amenities and decor. What a miscalculation! The hotel management seems to think that by slapping purple vinyl on the walls and silver beanbags in the rooms, you won't notice the place doesn't have the 3 basic things all hotels need: a comfortable bed, a quiet room, and a working bathroom. The walls and floors were so thin we could actually hear the lyrics to the music that was blaring in the disco below us until 2:00 am each night. The bathtub didn't drain so we got the yucky experience of standing in dirty water while showering. On the last day of our stay, we had no hot water at all. The bed felt like a cheap futon. This is basically a cool-looking flophouse; do not stay here unless you're young enough to put a higher value on hipness than on comfort.

An idiotic hotel

This hotel is filled with the losers of LA looking for a better job. It tries too hard to be trendy, but ultimately creates an uncomfortable and shockingly repulsive atmosphere. The quality of the materials used throughout the tacky hotel is unbelievably cheap. Not to mention the rude staff (they acted like they were too good for their customers!), lack of hot water, and all-night roar of traffic from the highway. A pitiful "hotel."

Grand Central Station

i usually stay at the avalon or w and dared try a new hotel-NEVER again. i requested a quiet room when making reservations and was placed in a room next to the stairwell, which was constantly in use. i complained and my room was changed but the new room was equally as noisy. the floor boards from the upstairs room squeeked like a hitchcock film. it was literally like having someone pound on the top of your head. the hotel manager explained that although the hotel had been redecorated, the infrastructure/walls and floors had not-thus the noise. The guests in the room next to mine left their television on all night and all i could hear was "yours for 3 installments of $19.99" ALL NIGHT. my room was also above the bar/nightclub so i also had the constantly pulsating music to contend with. IT WAS A NIGHTMARISH experience and i eventually vacated, opting to sleep on a friends sofa bed in exchange for the Hotel California. the standard is anythign but-it is far below standard!! the staff was wonderful and accomodating but that's all that i can say-also the drain in my shower drained so slowly that i'm convinced that i'm going to have a foot fungus.

Top Local Tips for Hollywood

The Mondrian Have breakfast at the Mondrian just up the road - fantastic - a world away from The Standard.

Try the Eggs-adilla I enjoyed the breakfasts at the hotel diner... notably the Eggsadilla... kind of like a quesadilla, but with scrambled eggs. mmmm. However I strongly suggest the diner staff visit a true short-order restaurant to learn how it's done right.

Stay away from the Standard hotels try a better hotel in the area. Nice area but the Standard is to be avoided at all costs
