Would be great except some major problems
from qwikwitted1
I admit I was really skeptical about this hotel from the reviews on here, but decided to take a chance since I got a really good deal on Expedia ($91/night) and decided to go ghetto on this trip anyway. I have to say that at first I was pleasantly surprised. The room was nice and spacious with a nice balcony overlooking a quiet street. Everything was clean and tidy (didn't seem too old). So I thought this might turn out to be a steal. But unfortunately I sat on the bed and it probably was worse than something out of a homeless shelter! I've had more comfortable beds at cheap motels! So i decided to flip the mattress myself and that helped make sleeping tolerable (along with a lot of alochol before bed). Another bad thing is that if you walk on the carpet barefoot - you will develop a slimy film on your feet - please wear flip flops! What a shame, with a new mattress and carpet, this hotel could easily have been above average. The staff is friendly, it has great location for hollywood clubs, and is reasonably priced - but please get new beds - the horrible mattresses are deal breakers!
Great value for the price

Our experience was just great. Room was clean and nicely decorated. Never could figure out how to start the gas fireplace. The bathroom was a bit dated but nothing that bothered my wife and I. Nice quiet neighborhood with gated parking (although you will pay for that). Good central location if you're doing the 'Hollywood thing'. Was able to avoid freeway traffic the whole trip. Would stay here should we travel this way again.
Complimentary Ants-Unpleasant Suprise
from A TripAdvisor Member
It's passable, but way overpriced. The rooftop pool wasn't heated, so don't plan on swimming from October thru March. The spa tub had a leak, so we couldn't use it. And there were some ants in the bathroom and a cigarrette mark on our sheets.
What a wonderful place

What a wonderful place...great management, great staff, lovely hotel with nothing but comfort. The rooms are a good size, all with fireplaces (how romantic) and the hotel is on a quit street but close enough to Sunset (party, party, party). I loved, I don't know how anyone else wouldn't want to stay there. Next time I'm in LA, that's where I'm going!
Great Location, but....
from DiStandley
After reading the reviews in tripadvisor (both good and bad) I decided to book a room due to the great location and the positive comments in the reviews. Well - it is a great location- walking distance to the Sunset Strip, Duke's (a great breakfast joint) and close enough to Hollywood Blvd., Melrose and the L.A. Farmer's Market. However, many of the negative comments in the previous reviews turned out to be pretty accurate. Our bed was incredibly uncomfortable- I could barely move the next morning..... our room was located on the first floor and was dark and cave-like. I requested a non-smoking room, only to find ashtrays throughout the room with a totally loaded ashtray on the "balcony". When I asked about moving to a higher floor, I was told "sorry". It seems apparent that the hotel is in major need of a "face-lift" - it feels very stale. A coffee maker would be nice (although you can rent one from the front desk - strange!) Not enough towels in the bathroom and ridiculous phone charges (use your cell phone!) The rooftop pool area was a nice spot to sit with a glass of wine, and the artwork throughout was interesting, but that was about it- I won't be staying here again (my back can't take it!!)
I thought it was pretty nice actually

After reading some of the bad comments here I was a little nervous about checking in. Once I did however I had no problems at all. No, there was no fruit basket waiting, but not a big deal. The beds were fine, the rooms clean and the staff friendly. The parking was expensive, but that is the way it is there in that area. I would stay here again.
Valadon Hotel - an L.A. Gem
from JANDTWashington_U_K_
Cannot praise this hotel enough! Good location, even for non-drivers, helpful and friendly staff, wonderful rooms. Booked for 2 nights, liked it so much we tried to book a third but were out of luck! Icing on the cake - rooftop pool with fabulous views of L.A.

Just spent 10 days at the Valadon - my first break in a decade. Given the location and price (and current US dollar rate against the UK pound) I doubt you would find anything so central in the same price range, without it falling into the 'sleazy motel' category.
Located in a very much gay neighbourhood, just down the hill from the Sunset Strip, the Valadon was ideal for me as a single female traveller with no car - I could walk to most places and also wasn't bothered constantly by men, unlike on European vacations! The pool was nice, though small and shallow - but that meant that the water was at a comfortable temperature, not ice cold as a deeper pool would be.
The pine furniture in the bedrooms has seen better days, still functional and certainly not broken, but could use a refinish and varnish just to spruce it up a little. I had a microwave and sink in the corner of my room, but no plates, mugs or cutlery were supplied, which I thought was a bit odd. I can only assume that the owners hoped that you would pay $6 for coffee on room service - there was no kettle supplied either! I have never stayed in a hotel that does not provide a kettle in the room. Bedding was clean and changed daily, and it appears that the owners have taken note of the comments made about the beds being hard - mine had been fitted with a padded undersheet and it seems to do the job of softening the otherwise stiff mattress underneath it.
It is a shame that the rooftop cafe was not available - it appeared that it hadn't been open in many months. There are only two dining tables with parasols out on the roof, and when I was there, it was 105 degrees - meaning that the sheltered corner of building which housed the cafe would have been a pleasant place to sit if I had decided to take advantage of the inhouse catering (a bit expensive I might add - $5 for half a grapefruit for breakfast!). I didn't use room service as I prefer to eat with others, and I didn't touch the mini bar - most items in it were around $5 a piece, including potato chips - ouch!!!
I would recommend it to a budget traveller who doesn't want to go down the motel/hostel route - just watch out for the additional costs of room service/mini bar/telephone. The hotel charges a $7+ connection fee and around 90 cents a minute to call overseas....get a cellphone with a prepaid simcard, or use a payphone!

A Complete Dump

I have to take extreme displeasure with my most recent hotel stay booked through your website. Your rating system gave the Valadon Hotel in West Hollywood a very high mark when in fact this should have been a 1-1/2 to 2 star hotel. I rely heavily on your recommedations via the ratings you post. This hotel was a dive. The carpets were filthy, the wall paper was coming off the walls, the bed was like sleeping on bricks, the shower water continuously turned hot and cold, the screen on the sliding door was broken and proped against the window, the sour odor never left the room, the sink was cracked and stained and the parking was $16.50 per vehicle. The desk clerk was nice but overall, this was a miserable experience. Please change their rating so no one else has to experience the awful place unexpectedly.
Best Regards.

Great hotel for the price
from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here for 3 nights in June in an Executive Suite (King Bed and Queen Sofa). We enjoyed our stay at the Valadon, it is located in a very quiet residential street but is only 5 minutes from Sunset Plaza on Sunset Bl (lots of nice restaurants and shops). The hotel was very peaceful, has a pool and a hot tub. Suite was fairly big and staff were helpful. Lot's of parking spaces as well. The negatives were: Parking is expensive $16.50 per day, they charged us for the 3rd person, they charged a connection fee for all out going calls (including 1-800 numbers) and the maid did not always leave us new toiletteries. So not that bad really!!! This is a great place to stay for the price and would definitely stay here again. A tip for those who have not been to LA, it doesn't really matter what area you stay in as you have to drive everywhere anyway and given the traffic in LA I would probably try to avoid staying at a hotel which is located on a major street as it may be fairly noisey!
Top Local Tips for Hollywood
BookSoup is the place to buy books Check out BookSoup bookstore on Sunset Blvd. They have a fabulous selection of books about Los Angeles.
great local restaurant The French Market on Santa Monica Blvd. is a great neighborhood restaurant with a New Orleans look, great food, large portions and very reasonable prices. It's been there for years, with good reason. I especially like their ribs.
better bet Stay at the Mondrian for guaranteed entry to the SkyBar. Grafton on Sunset or Standard for best location and overall value.
