Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Hermosa

Super Cheap, Super Nice Folks

from gabriel_moonstar
The hotel was just fine for a low-budget inn. Things were pretty clean and the staff was very helpful. Oceaside rooms are highly recomended, as most other rooms look out over a busy intersection.

Poor management, worse breakfast, worser view.

This was a girl friends beach weekend and our two nights at the Hotel Hermosa was two nights too long. Although recently renovated, the lobby was 70s cruise ship and the room was tired. The view room was, I suppose, technically a view room...if you were in just the right spot on the balcony and stood on tip-toes, you could see a sliver of water over the roof of an adjacent apartment complex. The expanded continental breakfast consisted of stale english muffins, bagels and white bread, mealy apples, and big bowls of butter, jam and cream cheese with greasy/sticky plastic silverware sticking out of them. The coffee was undrinkable - when they had any ready. We decided to go out for breakfast. When we returned that afternoon, someone had obviously gone through all our luggage, though fortunately nothing was missing. When I spoke to the manager, Carla, she did nothing, had a very uncaring attitude, and even said that since nothing was missing, it couldn't have happened. Underground parking is included, but when we returned from dinner there were no empty parking spaces, there is no convenient street parking and the desk clerk had no ideas.
Management Response from HotelHermosa
In response to (Girl friends beach weekend)

We At Hotel Hermosa are sorry that the weekend did not work out for you and express many apologies.

However I was the Front desk clerk who took the complaint about the luggage, I was very apologetic, and made an immediate incident report, after reporting this to the General Manager, (Carla Mack) We investigated the situation and found no errors. Our housekeeping staff is extremely responsible, disciplined and detail oriented. They followed all standard procedures.

Concerning the Continental Breakfast:
1.The plastic utensils are brand new from the package.
2.The Baked goods are ordered daily.
3.The coffee is brewed fresh 2 or 3 times per morning.

Concerning the Parking:
1.Hotel Hermosa is the only hotel in the area that provides underground parking for our guests (at no charge). City regulation is one parking space per room.

Concerning the View:
1.Every Building structure at the beach will only have some room with ocean views. The view will depend on the location of the room.

2.Our View of the Pacific Ocean is outstanding, on a clear day you may see Catalina Island. Looking east you can see the Malibu coastline

Concerning Cleanliness of rooms:
Hotel Hermosa HAS continued to receive excellent marks from AAA audits for over 10 years continuously.

I stay for extended periods while in the Hermosa Beach area and have stayed over 90 days this year alone in the Hotel Hermosa. I find the use of the grill and the relaxing comfort of the patio a welcome part of my stay. The staff has always been friendly, courteous, and helpful. The rooms are quiet, clean, and comfortable.

This is the only place I stay!

Reading over a couple of the negative reviews I wonder if they are talking about the same hotel. I love this place! I’m a commuting restaurant manager from South Orange County and stay at this hotel at least two nights a week. I am well acquainted with what constitutes good service. Not only is it a great location, but the staff is friendly and the rates are extremely reasonable compared to everything else around. I’ve only found one motel in the vicinity that is cheaper, but the difference in quality was staggering. The rooms here are always clean, stocked and well maintained. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable. The staff has always tried to accommodate my needs whether it’s an iron and board, or an ashtray for the patio. Honestly, for this price I haven’t found anything better and that’s what keeps me coming back.

Lured in by the sign that said the hotel had been voted best Hermosa Hotel The reception areas and patio garden were impressive. Unfortunatly the rooms weren't. We were told this was the last room they had and so was heavily discounted at $99, after we had agreed to accept it they managed to find a vacant suite at about $20 more for someone complaning they had been put into a smoking room. we were 4 adults and the room was very obviously for 2 and very well worn. No room for us and our luggage which we had to leave in the car. One bed pushed against the wall and the other so close to the balcony door it was difficult to get past to get onto the balcony. The room overlooked the busy intersection so we were entertained but the racing starts from the traffic lights well into the night. There was no iron or ironing board in the room, no staff available to bring one to the room but we could collect from reception. Unfortunatly it was a table top board but there was no socket near the table and no space on the floor so i had to use it balanced on the arms of the chair!! No stair so you had to take the elevator even for 1 floor. The pool was small and along side the busy noisy road. I wasn't too impressed by the breakfast experience either. there was coffee, poorly diluted concentrated orange juice, toast, begal and cereal. Hot water was on the floor of the kitchen in a type of water cooler and the cleaning staff joined us for breakfast at about 8am!! Internet access was very expensive. OK for 1 night but 2 was 1 night too many.

smelled of cigarette smoke.

from crush444
The hotel is not as described.
Their is an unpleasant smell of body odor in the elevator. The entire lobby area smelled of cigarette smoke. We felt like we were walking into a casino.
Our non smoking room not only smelled of cigarette smoke but had cigarette burns on the carpet and couch.
This hotel has not upgraded any of their furniture and is in dire need of repairs.
The TV reception is the worst.
The other hotels in the area offer much more for the same money.
The general manager is nasty and your comfort and enjoyment is the last thing she cares about.
Don’t ruin your vacation by getting a migraine from the odors here!

Definitely a budget hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family stay for 2 nights in a two queen bed ocean view. However, it was pretty heavily fogged so we weren't able to see anything. The room was OK, nothing fancy. There is a little fridge in the room so it was nice to keep water cold. On the 2nd night, the toilet clogged. I told the front desk when we were on our way out to dinner. The staff told us that he could give us a plunger when we returned from our dinner as they do not have anyone to send up to fix the problem. We stopped by the front desk on the way back from dinner and the same gentleman told us he could not find any plunger for us. His explaination was that some other guest must have borrow it and didn't return it. He doesn't have any other plunger in the hotel at all. So we have to go downstair in the lobby to use the bathroom. There isn't a lot of staff on hand during the day and there was only 1 person at night. This is definitely a budget hotel even though the price is a bit higher for a budget rate. I would not stay at this hotel again.

What a crappy hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
When I checked in they were training a new person and they made me wait for several minutes as they explained every single procedure. Then I got to my room and it smelled like puke. I asked to be changed to another room and they said they would call me back. I had to call them back over an hour later to ask to be moved again. As I sat waiting to be moved for another 30 minutes, I did notice the 80's decor and had serious doubts about staying at the hotel at all. My new room had the same decor and smelled a little better, but not much. The next morning when I went to the desk to check out there was a line and the trainee was on the telephone, apparently calling for back up. I waited again and finally was able to get a receipt and leave this awful place.

I tried calling the next few days to speak with the manager, Carla Mack, but I was given the runaround every time. I was told that she was in the hospital, then it was her husband who was in the hospital then she was there but I was transferred to the voice mail each time. This place has horrible rooms and the worst customer service.

Nothing amazing, but a good value.

Hotel Hermosa is a good option for a budget traveler willing to overlook some minor problems.

When compared to some of the big dollars being charged by other hotels in the area, Hotel Hermosa is a good deal. Fair amount of rough edges but they can be overlooked for the price. Plus the decor is straight out of the late 80's.

Hotel is located about a 10 minute drive from LAX right down Sepulvida. If you get into LAX in the evening and need something to eat there are tons of fast food and mid-level restaurants to stop at on the way to the hotel. There is a grocery store, a donut shop, a McDonalds and a mini-mart all within a one block walk.

Plus the covered parking is nice; we were there during the heavy rains of March 2005. Be warned though, the parking garage has tight corners and low ceilings. Big SUVs and trucks will have problems: even saw one Chevy Suburban damage their roof rack. Parking spots are small to.

Well, Hotel Hermosa is one of these places you stay at if you have to ! I stayed all over Hermosa and Manhattan beach hotels and also in private residence and Hotel Hermosa is alright,Cheap but far too far walking distance from the beach and attractions (at least 20 minuet walk) Ok if your driving but who wants to drive in and around this beautiful small town - Hermosa. Good location on Sepulveda blvd tho if you have a car and know W.L.A your at a good freeway location. Personally I'd venture closer to the beach and pay just a few more$ E.D
