Nice hotel, great location

Stayed for a couple of days in a standard room. Room was fine, view was nothing special. Service was good. Pool area was nice as well as the bar. We did not eat in any of the restaurants. There is wired internet access in each room for $10 per day. You can get free wireless in the lobby.

Best thing about hotel is its location. We parked the car for the two days (they still charge you $20 per day for mandatory valet parking) and walked everywhere. Beach is just down the hill. Several elevated restaurants with great ocean views are across the street. But, you can get cheaper meals of the same quality at the street level restaurants down the block.

Try to time your visit to off-season. Rates vary widely. We stayed during the week after racing season ended and paid 50% of what was charged the week before.

Received a promotional coupon for 45% off one nights stay so we took them up on it. Been to Del Mar before on a day trip but my wife always wanted to stay at the L'auberge. We are from Las Vegas, travel a lot, and know whats worth it.
The lobby is nice, service was friendly, and the hotel is in the best location to get out and shop and see the beach. Thats basically what your paying for and for 45% off, it was just barely worth it. My wife commented that, "if we would of payed full price for this room we'd be unhappy". It was a trumped up Holliday Inn/lower class Hilton type room. A nice room, but no way worth almost 400$!
Del Mar Plaza across the street is kinda phony and touristy and we had bad service and very bad drinks at the Pacifica restaurant. The mexican restaurant how ever, right next to the Pacifica, is great! The street next to the hotel (on the south side of the hotel leading to the beach overlook) has a cool and busy locals bar and there was karaoke going on tuesday night, and theres also a great little cafe on the corner with outdoor seating-great breakfast!

Herve, the director of food and beverage was so awsome! He was polite, charming and so helpful. I wanted to proposed to my girlfriend, and he did something so nice: he set up a table on the top of the waterfall bridge!

Just ask for him, you won't regret it...

Very relaxing

We stayed for 5 days in June (got $149 rate) and it was well worth it. Our main goal was to use L'auberge as a home base to visit San Diego and go to the beach. Our first room was right under the ice machine. After 2 nights, we asked to be moved and the front desk was very accomodating. Both rooms were nice and clean. The beds are 100% heavenly. We spent a lot of time out on the porch. The beach is a short walk down a path and is clean. It seems like everytime we came back to the room, we had fresh towels and not the wimpy kind. Big, fresh, fluffy, clean ones. We met a lot of people at the jacuzzi every night. There is a $19 charge for mandatory valet and if you want wireless, it is an extra $10 a day. We found several family restaurants down by the fairgrounds as most of the restaurants around the hotel seemed a bit pricey. Our time at the l'auberge was very relaxing and well worth what we paid to be so close the beach. It was a short drive into San Diego for all the sightseeing we did. We would definitely stay again.

Quaint Retreat

I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. It is very charming and quite picturesque.

There are plenty of dining opportunities near the hotel. I esoecially liked the Mexican restaurant across the street called Epazote. There is also an upscale grocery shop across the street on the second level. There you can purchase packaged items such as sushi, fresh baked goods, wine, cheese, ice cream, etc.

And yes, there is a mandaorty $20 parking/valet fee at the hotel. We easily got around this by finding safe, non-metered parking within a block or two of the hotel. Be sure to read the signs closely as you cannot park on certain days of the week because of street cleaning.

We're just back from 3 nights at L'Auberge and loved every minute of it. The hotel is a wonderful combination of luxury and comfort. The staff was excellent and the location can't be beat. As with many things in life, you get what you pay for. Prices are high but well worth it. We hope to return soon.

Small hotel, top-notch

Everything about this very small hotel is top-notch. The restaurant and food are especially good, and very reasonably priced for the quality. The rooms and furnishings are very comfortable, the water pressure in the bathroom really strong, and all rooms have pleasant balconies. We got a steal rate ($150 at hotels, so our balcony had no view of course) but our check-in went very smoothly and they still gave us an early check-in at noon, although advertised check-in time is 4 PM. (If you bring a car, they do charge another $19 for valet parking, which is mandatory.) The service was truly fabulous. The pool area is small but there is a sliver view of the ocean, especially from the roof-top restaurant (only open in summer). It is a very short walk from the beach (1 block) but it IS on a city street; however, check out the shops (the coffee shop too!) right across the street, which are all quirky and fun. My husband and I rated this place as better than the Hotel del Coronado for about the same price, although the Del has a better beachfront location (and is a much. much larger hotel). I stayed here on a recommendation from an airplane seatmate who raved about it, and I'm glad I did!

Very Romantic-Very Pricey!

My Husband and I just returned from a 3 night stay at L'Auberge Del Mar. We had a room on the 3rd floor, facing the pool, grounds and a partial ocean view. The room was very cozy and comfortable with a gas lit fireplace, an awesome bathroom (large marble shower and great bath products), and a very comfy bed with all the linens and down comforter. The room was spotless and we had great maid service including nightly turn down service. It was a beautiful boutique/resort. However, do be prepared to be charged for everything-$19/day parking and tips for the valets. I wanted to surprise my Hubby when we arrived for his B-day. Were not wine drinkers, so I had a 6 pack of beer supposedly delivered on ice to the room for when we arrived at midnight. We got there, the man at the front desk spilled the beans and said they didn't have the kind I wanted and what did I want. We then waited another 15 -20 min while he went to find the room service guy and then walked up to the room with him where my Hubby gave him a nice tip. When we checked out, there was a $46 charge for that 6 pack inluding 20% gratuity, delivery charge, tax, etc. WOW. Thats what left the bad taste in my mouth. I brought it up and explained it to the front desk people and the only thing they offered us was a drink. I was a little dissappointed with their attitude after spending quite a bit at the resort for spa, food, drinks,etc. Anyhow, it is a beautiful place, just be prepared to spend the bucks on incidentals.

Nice Hotel but Worth the Price?

We recently spent 4 nights at L'Auberge (for pleasure). The hotel was beautiful, the staff helpful, and the rooms very clean. The location was great too - within the shops and restaurants, and only a short walk to the beach. Our room was streetside and it wasn't very noisy at all (although didn't spend any time on the balcony). The bathroom was very spacious, beautifully decorated, and very clean. One other reviewer complained about the bed but ours was very comfortable.

I will admit that I was slightly disappointed in the resort vs the description on their website. The website gives the impression of a private path leading to the beach. While the path is somewhat private, it also cuts through a couple of parking lots, over train tracks, and one street. The main pool area was small (looks much larger on the website), and the day we relaxed by the lap pool, it looked like it had not been cleaned for days.

Also, the website didn't note (unless I missed it) that there is no self-parking on site, but $19 per night valet parking. When I asked the desk if we could park the car somewhere nearby (we only planned on driving it once in 4 nights), he mentioned a city garage around the corner which charged hourly. Needless to say, we paid for valet service and the valet staff was very nice and efficient.

A couple of other negatives - the air conditioner was very loud and I agree with another reviewer - when a nearby room took a shower, it sounded like it was in our bathroom.

Overall, it was a very nice place and I didn't really see any other comparable options in Del Mar, so if you're visiting there, I would recommend it. However, guess I expected a little more after visiting the website and for $285+ per night.

Top Local Tips for Del Mar

brunch at Americana Try brunch at Americana. if it is warm, there are great ocean view seats. Try the huevos rancheros and OJ. Cute waiter too! ;)

Great golf at Torrey Pines but plan ahead If you can't golf Torrey Pines, go hiking in the Torrey Pines Park. Beautiful. If they are racing at the track, that is a great way to spend time too. Close to La Jolla and to San Diego.

Food not as good as it's craked up to be! The restaurant in the hotel called J. Taylor's was NOT a nice experience at all! The food was mediocre at best. And WAY over priced for what you get! I would highly recommend going OUT of the hotel for dinners!
