Historical Traveller Reviews of Marriott Resort Coronado Island Hotel
A Delightful Place
My husband and I stayed here over Christmas 2003. Initially we were given a room which was as dark as a cave, but the front desk staff was very accomodating and we were then given a room overlooking San Diego Bay and the skyline of the city. We were steps away from the waterfront path which gave us access to rental bikes, restaurants and shops. I've stayed at the Hotel del Coronado and prefer this Marriott. The Marriott room was huge with a lovely balcony, large bath area and plenty of counter space both in the bathroom and the bedroom. I typically travel about 40 weeks per year and this is one of the best Marriotts which I have ever stayed at.
NY family trip to California/Aug. 4-Aug.7 2004
My husband and I just returned from 2 weeks traveling California with our 3 kids (ages 9, 12, 14). We just came back from the Marriot Coronado Beach Resort for the last 4 days of our trip. Our first impression was that the resort was outdated in decor and very impersonal. More of a business hotel. But the beds were comfortable, service great and the staff was very friendly. The rooms need to be updated but were very clean and spacious. The resort is near some restaurants and the beach by the Del Coronado has street parking but it is a short drive from the Marriot. The Marriot charges 15$ per day for parking (a bit of a shock) and apparently there is a "package rate" that includes breakfast and parking we were not told about and we spent over 200$ per night and had two rooms so ask. Wish we had known. I also had to go to an island laudromaut since this resort has no laundry facilities. Overall, we are happy we stayed at Coronado Island because of the resort town atmosphere and beach instead of in San Diego itself. The reviews about the Marriot are accurate and appreciated. Have fun in your travel plans.
Luxurious with access
You know how sometimes you stay at a resort, and it is beautiful but you feel captive once inside, unable to go anywhere without the hassle of getting your car? The Marriott Coronado is not like this at all, but is so comfortable yet accessible, totally appropriate for this low key island. It is a very understated yet extraordinarily relaxing, pleasing resort. We stayed here for 3 nights and loved every minute. There is a great bathroom (separate jacuzzi tub and shower stall with great lighting), spaceous and nicely decorated room, large pool with nice view though no fancy water features. There is also a nice adults only lap pool outdoors. No, the resort is not on the beach but as long as you know that and have a car, it is only a 5 minute drive and is perfectly convenient. You can also walk along the boardwalk to restaurants, shops and the ferry to downtown San Diego. I have stayed at the Hotel del Coronado before, and think it is overpriced with a choice of either old, small rooms in the original hotel or boring ones in the new towers. I much preferred the Marriott resort, and can't wait to visit again.
stayed for 2nights end of april 2004-- left for a different hotel after the two nights.
The hotel is located opposite the wonderful coronado beach-- be aware. The whole allure of the island is truely the coronado beach which is worth the trip to the island. There is no nice beach around the marriott. It is ok with clean rooms but for the price should expect more plush accomodations. The "resort" is limited with bland resort services.
I've been to coronado before and stayed at hotel coronado which is "victorian" ie old and the rooms are small so not really worth the money but located in a great place.
Stayed at the glorietta bay inn which was across the street from hotel del coronado and was average but for the price it was worth it.
Overall, hard to find a luxury hotel in coronado. Would recommend staying at a place near the beach which is the best part of the island.
We've stayed here in this hotel 3 times everytime we visit Coronado Island. Each time we come here, we love it and never get tired of it! It's a beautiful resort and the pool is large and very nice to relax in. The grounds and gardens of the hotel is beautiful also. The hotel is near various restaurants, within walking distance, and to walk by the bay after dinner overlooking downtown San Diego is a delight! We did try the Hotel Del for one night and we preferred the Coronado Island Marriot.. Would go back again soon!
t wait to go again next yr.

Every positive thing you read from others posting here is true.
Our daughters loved the atrium right outside our room, with ducks, turtles & coy. Not to mention the huge walkin bird cage with parakeets.
The boardwalk along the Bay is right down the hotel steps. This boardwalk takes you right to Ferry Landing.
The sunken tub, separate shower, huge bathroom, phone by the toilet & a vanity with lightbulbs made my girls giggle with excitement.
The patio/balconies are also large.
We fell in love with the place, and the staff was way beyond helpful.
In my search for two little cartons of milk for my girls.......the staff member I asked bent over backwards trying to find it.........then just gave it to me at no charge.
We loved going back and forth via their water taxi.....within minutes we were on the SD Bay side, walking through Seaport Village.
Just returned from a very enjoyable three night stay over Memorial Day weekend. After an exhausing 3 hour drive from LAX we were welcomed with an upgraded pool-side room(Marriott Gold Elite) overlooking the bay and Coronado Bridge. Live band with casual island sound played poolside Sat. afternoon, very relaxed family atmosphere. As others have stated, large clean rooms, large bathroom area with separate tub and shower. Well lit vanity(adored by my wife and daughter). Very accessible, free street parking in front of hotel is a good alternative to rather expensive self park lots which are no more accessible. Best views are rooms with a northeast exposure overlooking beautiful landscaped grounds and Downtown San Diego. Families might prefer poolside accomodations at the center of the property. On-site staff was very accomodating throughout our entire stay. We have stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado in the past but prefer the laid back atmosphere here, especially with a substantial difference in cost.
Beautiful Location .... Great Experience

We recently enjoyed a three night stay at this beautiful resort. We were very impressed with everything about the resort. Some of our most enjoyable things (besides the beautiful bay view room) were the lovely ponds and gardens. The ponds had huge coi and numerous ducks and birds to watch and be entertained by their antics! In addition, there was great entertainment around the pool area during the evenings, i.e., bands, jazz, etc. The rooms were very large with large bathrooms, very clean and pretty! I could go on and on! We will stay again on our next trip to San Diego.
Wonderful! Marriott is Consistently Excellent.
I had a wonderful 4-day stay at this resort in September, 2003. Everyone on the staff was wonderful - - the service was outstanding and at times, astounding! Everyone seemed genuinely warm and friendly. The restaurant is fabulous. I travel a lot and dine out continuously so I'm hard to impress. I was impressed with the decor, service and the quality of the food. My room was large and very comfortable. The decor is a little dated, but still very nice and very clean. The large private balcony was very nice and had a beautiful view - - over the pool and bay with the skyline of downtown San Diego in the background. The in-room safe is a great feature. The bathroom is enormous with separate soaking tub and shower. The location is great. You can walk to many shops and restaurants and it only takes about 10 minutes to drive into San Diego over the bridge. The traffic was not bad. SUGGESTION: Be sure to specify that you want a room that faces toward downtown San Diego (northeast) and not just a "bay view" room. The rooms that face southeast overlook the Port of San Diego and it's very industrial and unattractive. I will definitely return to this hotel.
We just got back from a four-night stay at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort, and it was wonderful! When we arrived early at 11:30am, the lady at the front desk immediately checked us in without any problems even though check-in starts at 4pm. When we requested a refrigerator, the lady promptly sent one up to our room! The villas have refrigerators, but we booked a regular resort view room and so we were surprised when they actually delivered a refrigerator to our room. Our resort view room had a view of several ponds and the tennis courts and partial view of the Bay Bridge, which we enjoyed as we ate our lunches out on our patio. Our room was spacious with a king size bed, a couch, small dining table, and a well lit vanity table. The bathroom was huge as well...separate tub and shower and lights that progressively get brighter. Also you can set the shower water to a certain temperature, so that you don't have to fiddle with the knob everytime you hop in. The grounds are beautiful...ponds filled with fish and an aviary are found in the center of the complex. Ducks and numerous flamingos are on the premises. We played tennis everyday, layed out at the pool, and took walks along the bay to the Ferry Landing, where there are many shops. You can also hop on a ferry for $2 that goes to downtown San Diego (Marriott has its own ferry for $5). We also walked to Orange Street...stop by the Donut Shop on 2nd and Orange if your there. Also, eat at CBC and Miguels if you get a chance! I would highly recommend staying at this resort. Nice people, helpful concierge.
Top Local Tips for Coronado
Rental Car Might Not Be Necessary
If you plan to spend much of your visit in San Diego, you can get around fairly cheaply using water taxis, trolleys, buses and shuttles. The water taxi from the hotel to the mainland is $6 per person, but after that you can walk most anywhere you'd like to go.
The water taxi from the Marriot takes you right across to San Diego where you can go to a Padres game or go to the Gaslamp (I think I have that right..) Quarter where there is an endless supply of restaurants, bars and shops.
Water Taxi - Fun, Different & Convenient
The hotel Water Taxi is a fun way to get to the other side of the Bay. We got the package that included this unlimited service. Leaving every 30 minutes is very convenient. The driver was very professional - felt safe! What a view - something definitely different for someone from the desert!
