Should have stayed at the Del Coronado

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed at Lowes on 10/25/03 for our one year aniversary.
We had nothing but problems. I booked a partial ocean view room via the internet. The first room they gave us smelled of smoke (we asked for non-smoking). We told the hotel clerk that we could not possibly stay in that room and she told us that was the only ocean view room left.
She moved us to the pool side of the hotel directly over a trash dumpster on the first floor. The hotel staff told us that this room was the only king bed room left. Then the hotel staff would not compensate us for moving into a cheaper room (partial ocean view rooms are more expensive). After much bickering they decided to compensate us the $35.00. After all of this, half our night was over. We ate at the fancy hotel restaurant which was extemely expenisve and not that great. The pool side of the hotel is really noisy and directly above the pools.
You couldn't go on the balcony without everyone down in the pool area watching you. The customer service was below average at this hotel.
Lowe's is definately not a 4-star hotel, maybe a 3-star. Lowes's is also approximately 4 miles from any shops or restaurants, so eating out takes alot of time. Even the hotel's grounds were not that nice. There was alot of concrete and not many open tropical areas. I was not impressed with any aspect of Lowe's. The "resort" is not enchanting or classy, it is simply a regular hotel with a fat price tag. We were dissapointed by all of it. The best part of our night was the little gondola ride throught the channels of Coronado. If the Hotel Del Coronado did not have a 2 night minimum we would have stayed there.
That Hotel is simply breathtaking. As for Lowe's, I would definetly pass and stay at the Del.

unhappy with getaway

from normafab4
This was an anniversary weekend getaway for hubby and I from the kids. I reserved many months in advance thinking erroneously that it would give us prime spot. They put us next to a room with a family with kids that were banging on the walls at 6:00 a.m., yelling thru the thin walls, loud t.v. just AWFUL. I complained to no avail. Sunday brunch was supposed to include brunch for two (package we bought) they tried to charge us for one. The food was excellent tho. Rentals for the tennis courts, bicycles, etc. were outrageous. The only part of the weekend that I liked was the pool and the reggae band that played while we lounged in the water. Lastly, we got double charged for the weekend!!! When I saw the bill I about fainted. Very little for the money.

Not what we exptected

This resort was nice, but not at all what we expected. When making our reservation, the lady I spoke with asked the names of our children, so that they could welcome them, by name, upon check-in. She also told me that they would each receive a special "welcome gift" upon check-in.
Not only did they not even say hello to the kids, I had to ask for their "welcome gift", and then was told that they would have to find some. We found the check-in area to be a bit unorganized. I can't remember which building our room was in, but I remember that it was a LONG walk to the main building, where the restaurant was. The main restaurant there was pricey, and there were VERY few dining options.
The resort is WAY out of town, so driving to another location eat would have taken some time. Our room was very nice, with a large balcony and a view of the pool area, which is also very nice. The bathroom was huge, with a huge sunken tub which the kids loved. Beds were comfortable. Another disapointment was......when making the reservation I was told that they offered some fun things for the kids, such as "flick and float" where you can float on an inner-tube in the pool while watching a movie, and a marshmallow roast at the beach....which by the way is somewhere across the street and not to be seen anywhere from the resort. After we got there, we were told that those activities only happened on the weekends, and we were there during the week. The room was nice, but I was not at all impressed with the resort itself.
The location was too remote for us. If you're looking for a resort with privacy, this would be good.

Delightful Resort - Great Staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
We arrived on Friday 10/24 for a delightful and long postponed weekend stay on the Ocean. From the moment we checked in until our departure on Monday, the staff couldn't have been more helpful and even upgraded us to a bay view room. Great pool and the spa construction is mostly done and didn't get in our way or view at all. I have to admit some bias as we travel with our Golden Retriever and this hotel goes out of its way to make pet owners and their pets welcome - they have a "Loews Loves Pets" program complete with dog biscuits on arrival, dog bowls and for the truly indulgent, pet room service - I'm not kidding, although we didn't take advantage of it. The restaurants were great and we loved the location - not great if you want to be in the middle of a lot of "action" but we have plenty of that in Vegas. I have to give special kudos to the hotel since we were there for the outbreak of the big San Diego fires. The hotel promptly filled up with many people (and their pets) who had been evacuated due to the wildfires. All of a sudden the staff was put into 'overdrive' and boy did they rise to the occasion.
The place was filled with a mixture of people vacationing, conferencing and fleeing fires and the hotel took care of all of them. It really seemed they cared. I'd stay there again in a second.

Great Weekend on Coronado

We just got back to Anchorage from a long weekend at Loews Coronado Bay Resort. I do not understand the recent negative reviews on this property. The hotel is beautiful. Our room was fresh and clean. The meals we had at the hotel were good, but not exceptional. The hotel has a marina for guests to rent sailboats, jet skis or ski boats. The beach is right across the street and safely accessible by bike path and tunnel. The place is isolated so a rental car is recommended to get around.

Not worth the money.

I should have listened to the reviews and not booked this hotel. We stayed at the Loews on 10/12/03 and 10/13/03. The maid service was extremely slow. It took one hour and three phone calls to get a working hair dryer. On the night we checked in, the room across the hallway had left a coffee pot and broken champagne glasses on the hallway floor.
None of this was picked up until the morning we checked out, two full days later. One afternoon, we returned to the room to find that the beds had been made, but the sheets had not been changed since hair was still on the bed. We called maid service and they showed up at the room to explain that the sheets had been changed, they proceeded to pick the hair off the bed and said that after laundering their sheets, sometimes hair still sticks to the clean sheets. I'm not sure how they do laundry at the Loews, but my clean sheets never have hair stuck to them! The furnishings in the room were worn and the bathroom, although big, was also old. This place is not worth the money.

t go back

The Loews Coronado claims to be a four star resort, but we strongly disagree. Upon check-in, we were 15 minutes early and were sent away, so we decided to get something to eat. Once we got up to our room, we found a dirty bathrobe and a dirty towel crumpled up on the end of the bed. We chaulked it up to them being in a rush and decided to just request a new robe, which never came. Our second request a few days later was for a price list to the mini bar. They continued to insist that it was in the mini bar itself and only agreed to bring one when I explained that I had the whole thing emptied onto the bed and still, there was no price list. It never came. On Friday, the day before we left, we came back from meetings later in the day only to find that housekeeping had never been there. We'd figured they were busy because of checkouts and call down before we left for the evening to request a complete service. They said it wasn't a problem, however, when we returned late that evening, our room had not been touched. We decided just to go to sleep, but got even more frustrated the next morning when there were no clean towels for our showers. We had already reused so as to oblige their request to 'save water'! Most of these things had been mentioned over the phone or at the front desk, but upon check out, not once were we asked how our stay was.

Loews Coronado- not a beach resort

from traveler
My husband and I recently went on a trip to southern California and spent one day at Loews Coronado. We were a little disapointed because although the hotel is nice- it is not a beach area like we were expecting. The pool is okay- but overcrowded and the hotel is not really near anything- it is just off the highway and not what we wanted for a relaxing beach holiday

My family and I stayed at Loews Coronado last week. We were not aware until we arrived that hotel is under construction (health club). Whilst we were pleasantly surprised by low noise level it was a shame that our marina and bay view was spoiled by 40 yard construction containers directly outside our window. Also wanted to point out to anyone travelling with elderly or disabled family members that you should make a point of asking for rooms in building one. We were in building five, which is a real treck from the lobby and restaurants. Additionally, while all pools have signs posted with limited hours of operation the staff tells you on check in that pools are open for use 24 hrs so I imagine it can get noisy in pool view rooms.

My first stay at a Loew's Hotel was in Coronado. The first room we were given was smoke filled, filthy gray carpet and very dark and depressing. It overlooked a construction site. We went back to the desk and requested a different room. The 2nd room was better, not smoke filled, but the carpets were totally worn, the bedspread was dirty and the walls had crayon marks all over them. Very disappointing. We felt like we were in a bad Motel 6. Hallway carpets were old and worn and elevator took 5 minutes to go 3 floors down. Very disappointing. I would never stay at a Loew's Hotel again.

Top Local Tips for Coronado

Drive or get a rental car Coronado is little too far for a complimentary taxi and is too far to get a reasonable taxi- take into consideration all of the money you will save if you rent a car or simply drive to these destination.

Stay closer to the Coronado shops If you want to be able to easily walk around the shopping/restaurant area in Coronado, stay at the Hotel Del or one of the other adorable Inns/Hotels.

Shuttle bus It would be helpful to have a regular free shuttle bus to the ferry area of Coronado Bay which would pick up from the last ferry too.
