Although my family of 3 was only at the Del for less than 24 hours, we highly recommend it. Our room was upgraded upon check-in to an ocean view without us asking! The room was a "standard" but decorated very upscale. The Del's toiletries in the bathroom were enjoyable. The Del's proximity to the beach cannot be beat! The restaurants were crowded and food was adequate.

went to the del oct, the service was great, stayed in the towers but the room was a good size,great bathroom , kristine helped us to find some nice restaurants,she had maps ,directions,and and a great personality,of course its a little expensive but try to stay anywhere on the ocean,all the hotels we checked were the same price, great pool clean hot tub was great, nice shops , but buy your breakfast outside nice little breakfast places walking distance, much cheaper,yes i would return

Very Disappointed

I agree with many of the negative reviews here. I just wish I had read them before my husband and I travelled from Pittsburgh for a much-anticipated stay at the Hotel Del Coronado. We stayed in the Victorian building, and the room was very small and not very well maintained. For example, on our first night, the toilet clogged and overflowed. The carpet was filthy and looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in years. I found ants in the bathroom, the bed, and the dresser drawers. The walls were paper thin and we could hear people next door and in the hallway. The tile in the bathroom was mildewy, and the bathroom itself didn't even have a counter for us to place our toiletries on. The towels seemed rough, and the pillows were as hard as rocks. The maids never provided us with extra soap or toiletries, even though it should it have been obvious that we were using the items given to us on our first night there. The hotel itself seemed to be overrun with conventioneers and non-guests gawking at the building. At the end of our stay, I found out by reading our bill that we had been given a smaller "resort " category room even though I had reserved and confirmed a large "premium" type room. The exterior of the hotel is beautiful and the beach seemed large, but all in all, I was very disappointed in this hotel and would never return.

Another Disappointed Guest

We spent three nights at the Hotel Del this August.The hotel and grounds are beautiful.We had brunch in the Crown room which was fabulous. But our hotel rooms were very disappointing. They were located in the new part by the beach which was a great location but they were absolutely filthy.We had an outside poarch where there were still remnants from other guests. They really need to improve to be able to keep their five star rating. We will not be staying there again anytime soon but will return for a lovely walk through the grounds and brunch.

We stayed at the Hotel Del for 2 nites and the rooms were very disappointing...first we paid for the resort catagory,and were put into the wrong rooms..the same thing happened to our other family members who booked separately from us!The customer service seems helpful....changed our room and we were told that we had a balcony over-looking the garden area...this was done since our requests for 2 beds was confirmed 3x.Yet,when we arrive in our room,it was just a window with a glimpse of the area! (our other family members were placed in a tiny room overlooking the dumpsters!) By this time my patience ran out and I demanded another room....2 hours later we were given a nice room in the Towers with 2 beds and a nice bay and pool view.....our travel agent pleaded with customer service.By the way...you cant check in till 4pm!! The Del is beautiful and the food in the Sheerwater was excellent...but the rooms are way over-rated! I will visit the Del and eat there,but never again will I book a room....Glorietta Bay inn is the best bet for your money and it's beautiful and just across the street.

Great buiding but less than personal service

My room was huge and very elegant. No complaints there but it should have been for the price.I could have done without the piped music which woke me every morning at 7 though. No response at all to my complaint.The food in the restaurants was very dissapointing but I would reccomend the bar food.Totally anonymous service, after 5 nights the staff in the bar still asked me if I was a resident and as a female travelling alone I felt that I was unwelcome or under suspicion.The location is stunning but as the hotel is totally invaded by coach tours I did feel ther could have been more areas only for residents.Overall worth visiting but don't stay too long it is not worth it.I made a note on the customer satisfaction survey at the Del and nobody followed up my issue. they probably feel they do not need to which says it all really.In contrast my next hotel Auberge del Mar on this trip provided fantastic service.

much more bad than good

As the motto goes start with the good and end with the bad so here goes: Good: The hotel is wonderful historic site with magnificant grounds/public areas and a prime location on the coronado beach. The hotel also has amazing architecture and quite a history. The site of the hotel from the beach is breathtaking. Morover, the hotel has so much to do there that you really do not even have to leave. That is where the good ends!

The bad and the ugly:

The hotel overplays its historic image to charge excessive rates for subpar rooms with amentities that are the equivalent of a howard johnson and customer service that rates at the absolute bottom of my list of hotels. I cannot stress this enough the customer service at this hotel is so far beyond terrible that it is insulting! Our first night there we were placed in a room next to one of the many sets of wooden stairs in the hotel and We literally sleep about two hours that night from the noise of people walking up and down the stairs. the next morning we complained to the front desk and spoke with three clerks and a manager-- not a single person apologized. Rather all that was said was it is an old hotel and the stairs tend to make the place noisy. I told the clerks that they should try sleeping in the rooms next to the wooden stairs and they woukd never try and rent them again. I also suggested that the hotel either not rent those rooms or soundproof the walls. The clerk told me that since the hotel is so busy-- I would be "lucky if there is another room available". The clerk then found a room but told me it had to be cleaned and that we would have to pack our stuff up and leave it at the bell stand until the other room was cleaned because she had to make our room available for new people that would be arriving. Terrible customer service!

Then we went to sit by the pool which was absolutely mobbed with kids.
We deciceded to then go to the hotub which also had about 25 young children sitting in it. One parent had her 2 year old daughter in the hot tub completely naked and kept necouraging her to jump in the hot tub-- the hotel employees said nothing and refused to enforce the rule at the hotel that young children must wear swim diapers.

The hotel also opens its doors to visters who want to tour the hotel at the expense of the guests who are spending over $300.00 per night. the common areas are mobbed with tourists who are walking around the hotel.
The atmosphere is such that you are at a museum and not a resort. No privacy or peace and quiet at all. Even better, hotel guests are forced to wait in line for often fifteen minutes to see the concierge because the concierge is busy helping non-guests of the hotel.

I visted the hotel directly after a stay at shutters on the beach in Santa Monica. On a scale of 1-10 shutters is a 10 and the Hotel Del is a 5.

Problems with the Hotel Del: 1. High Rates 2. subpar rooms with few amenities 3. Cheap towels 4. cheap beds 5. noisey rooms next to wooden stairs 6. both pools and the hottub were completely packed with children 7. Public areas mobbed by non guest of the hotel 8. Rude staff 9. Poor management.
10. Belief on the part of ownership that they are doing you a favor by letting you stay at the hotel for $300 a night.

The hotel is a beautiful historic site, but take my advice and stay somewhere else and do what everyone else does-- go to the hotel as a visitor. It is truly more of a historic site than a luxury hotel. If you insist on going-- stay for i night and that is it!

Disappointing Rooms

My husband and I visited the Hotel Del Coronado in June for a family wedding. The hotel's public places are beautiful and you can't beat the location on the beach. The disappointment was the hotel rooms. Our room was filthy: stains on the bedspreads, stains on the carpet, hair in the tub. We have stayed in cleaner (and cheap) motels and were very disappointed in the lack of care in maintaining the rooms at the Hotel Del. Another member of our party had a room that had many bugs in it and had to be sprayed by maintenance. We were expecting a 5-star overnight experience, but got a 1-star room.

We had a wonderful time. We have two boys ages 6 & 3. Lots for them to do. Pool, beach, and my 6 yr. old and my husband even took the surfing lesson. Had a wonderful l time until my husband stepped on a sting ray!!!!! Our only complaint is that our lovely room overlooked the cout yard. Very lovely until about 12:00 a.m. when the employees are cleaning up after a wedding. Kept us up both nights cleaning up. Very noisy. They were laughing and having a great time, which is great for them but not for those of us trying to enjoy a little much needed sleep.

A nice place but too crowded

The Hotel Del Coronada, is a beautiful hotel, the lokation is good and the food pricing is ok. We had booked a standart room for 3 nights. The room was very small, with view to the loading ramp and the bath was a joke, about 2 square meters. And both looked like it may need a renovation. But the friendy staff at the front desk gave us a much bigger room with a balcony and view to the patio. The noise from the airforce base is ok and after 11 p.m. there hadn't been any flights.
But the main problem was the tourist crowd which walked via the hotel.
Sometines we felt like visitors of a tourist attraction and not like hotel guests. But a nice point is the coffee shop, a very good and cheap alternative to the breakfast restaurant.

Horrible Hotel Del

My husband and I were excited about a relaxing vacation in San Diego at the Hotel Del. It was simply horrific. The hotel is like a small metropolis with swarms of tourists cramping every square foot of the property. The staff was unfriendly, the cuisine unappetizing, and our miniscule room smelled of rotting fish. The so called "quiet pool" was filled with dozens of screaming children spilling food all over the area, and a sweating staff trying to accomodate for the masses. If you want peace and quiet, The Hotel Del is not the place to go. It's more like Disney World than an island retreat.

Top Local Tips for Coronado

What a beautiful city, and the food is fantastic. While in Coronado Peohe's and The Boathouse are musts! The food, service and views are wonderful.

Airport shuttle I left to return to Michigan before my partner, so I took the hotel's shuttle to the airport. Having stayed at budget hotels in the past that offer free shuttle service, I didn't even think to ask about price, as none was listed in the directory. I assumed it was free, but was wrong. Dropping me off at the airport, which is only about 15 minutes away cost me $29. I could have easily taken a taxi for far cheaper. However, I wouldn't have had the elderly gentleman who drove me who shared all sorts of stories about the hotel and the sites as we passed them. So be aware of that.

Breakfast nearby, drive to dinner Several great places for breakfast within walking distance including a Starbucks. Check out Confidential and Rama in the Gaslight district for good dinners with a hip crowd.
