Stayed, but far from relaxed

from A TripAdvisor Member
We should have read some of these reviews before my family and I stayed three nights at La Costa Resort.

Having had wonderful experiences at the sister resort La Quinta in Palm Springs, we decided to stay at La Costa. This is supposedly a luxury resort and they had just nearly completed a $140 million refurbishment - we had high hopes...

Upon arrival, our "deluxe" room was far from luxurious, it was so far from any parking (the parking lot was just dirt - which I later found out that we would be charged $10 per day for the privilege to use). The wing where our first room was located looked like a motel - the carpets leading to the room were dirty. The room was very small - not what I would expect paying $300+ a night).

The pool was a hike and the resort amenities were almost non-existent. It is strange that there is only one small restaurant for a luxury resort? I overheard some businessmen asking the hotel receptionist where the bar is tender for the nearby bar – the receptionist just shrugged his shoulders - appalling service. We decided to cut our stay short and go to the Four Seasons - I called the Manager and he upgraded us to a much Spa Room - the room smelled very musty but ok apart from that.

The La Costa has some great possibilities but in my opinion are far from being a luxury resort. We will not visit La Costa again.

Chaos

Despite warnings, I stayed at the Resort for the Acura Tennis Classic. As another trip advisor noted, the guest room had a musty, moldy smell, so powerful I had to be moved. It took quite a while, as does everything at this resort. The place needs coordinated management from the front desk throughout this sprawling complex. Everyone is confused and disorganized. Tennis stars and regular guests alike were smirking about the bad service wherever I went. We talked about it. Even though we pay $15. for coffee and internet access in our rooms, the "city roast" is undrinkable. When I called to complain, Robert just said, "I'm sorry" and sent no coffee. So we line up in the marketplace for Starbucks. Order a smoothie? You'll hold up the line for fifteen minutes and then be told the machine hasn't been working. Head for the Chopra Center for their advertised guided meditation, and you're told that they "don't have it this week and besides it's not guided." Oh. By the time you walk over to the new spa, you need what you overpaid for: the poolside roman shower is fabulous, and the sauna is great. The pricey spa treatments are good, depending on your massuese, but the laughter and banging of doors in the hallway do not inspire tranquillity. Though I am local and need this getaway, I think I'll stay at the Aviara next year.

s a great destination again!!

Everything old is new again!!!! I had heard that one of the country's first destination spas had become run down & dowdy. After having stayed at the beautiful 4 Seasons Aviara and hearing stories of round the clock construction at La Costa, I was a bit leary of switching locations. But, after $140 mil. in renovations, I believe La Costa is a destination again!
We stayed July 2004 when the construction on guest rooms and facilities where complete. The only thing left is a new restaurant being built near the lobby. We were upgraded to a brand new, large & beautiful golf course room so our rates were quite reasonable for what we got . The staff was helpful & friendly, the flowers and grounds were being meticulously maintained and the common areas (pool, etc.) were lovely and relaxed. The new Spa is outstanding and the gym is health club caliber (I believe locals join as their gym too). Not to mention the SD weather & the proximity to a great beach.
I recommend La Costa!!!!

Also disappointed!

My husband and I chose La Costa for a brief getaway, but found the "vacation" to be quite stressful. When we arrived, they put us in a room only 15 feet away from construction (the resort was far from full). I called the front desk to complain, and one hour later, they called back with another room number (we moved ourselves to the next room- they said that they would "meet us there" with the key, but never showed up). Again, this room was also close to construction, so we walked back to the front desk. The staff at the front desk was far from friendly- they gave us yet another room, and offered a curt apology. This room was OK- nothing special, but at least farther away from the construction. The manager I spoke to the following day was kind and even bought us lunch, but it seemed like too little, too late. This resort is much too expensive to be treating its clients like this- we regretted the time spent at La Costa, and plan to never return.

Disappointing, but not just because of construction....

Booked an anniversary weekend there. December 2003, Their website stated that their construction was "almost finished". Not even close!
They closed the whole building of the room we reserved, because someone hit a water main. Didn't upgrade, gave us "almost" as nice a room for the same price. Rooms were nice enough.

Spa service was indifferent. They didn't ask whether I preferred a male or female masseuse/masseur as most spas do. Didn't give any instructions as to where to meet him/her. People I asked for help pretended to check where he was. Twenty minutes later, he shows up, and now my 45 minute massage is 25 minutes. No apologies, just cluelessness and arrogance. Beautiful Spa building, but awful Spa staff.

Great place...but still under construction

My mom and I were at the La Costa Resort just this past weekend, March 14-16th. The Resort is beautiful and our room was gorgeous! Parking was tough, as others have stated. Valet parking is a bit pricey, and our room was about 1/2 mile from the valet. I'm sure shuttles are available, but they're hard to find when there's an event going on at the Resort. The Spa is incredible and I would highly recommend their services to all. My main complaint, and it's a big one, is the ongoing construction. We were there to relax...but were rudely awakened just after 7AM by a jackhammer right outside our patio doors. The hammering continued throughout the day and I couldn't find anyone on staff at La Costa who cared. When we booked this trip, I was told over the phone the renovation was complete. Never would I have imagined they would give us a room near where they'd be removing concrete the very next day. If you're going to stay at La Costa soon, make sure you specifically request a room FAR AWAY from any construction...because once they've placed you, they won't care when you complain.

Great Improvement!

I had the misfortune of staying here in April,2003 just when the renovation had started. It was terrible. My wife and I just returned after spending our anniversary at the resort. We had received a letter of apology from the GM because of our last experience & an offer to give them another chance. They definitely made up for the last experience. The renovation is very nice. The new Spa is beautiful. They are constantly working on the property to upgrade it and it keeps getting better. The employees were extremely friendly and attentive.
They exceeded our expectations. We will definitely go back.

A little disappointed

from Cassper
My wife and I stayed overnight for Valentine's.

Although the resort has the look and feel of an upscale property, our experience at La Costa was a bit subpar.

On more than one occasion we were promised room upgrades that never materialized.

Our room was decidedly lacking in amenities: No bedside clock. No VCR/DVD/CD player. Although there was a card on one of the hangers in the closet announcing a pair of bathrobes for our use, there were no bathrobes. Also, there was no lotion in the bath, and the bar of soap in the shower had been used already!

The self-parking is too far removed from the main lobby: there was a driver picking up a couple from the lot as we were unloading within plain view, but although there was plenty of room for us, we were ignored.

Upon arriving in the dining room for breakfast more that a half our before cutoff time, we were curtly informed that there was no room for additional diners. When we informed them that we had the breakfast package, they begrudgingly seated us . . . not exactly service with a smile.

All in all, we would not recommend staying at La Costa at this point in time. Perhaps the situation there will improve once the renovations are complete.

s Fine For Tennis

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I just got back from La Costa on 10/20/03. It was just an overnighter birthday present for the resident tennis addict. We had a tennis package that included unlimited court time. So, we got to play for a few hours on both grass and clay courts. The room was just a few steps from the tennis complex and had been completely refurbished. The restaurant has a rather Chopra'esque menu (i.e., leaning towards vegetarian). But, the prices were reasonable, and ater three sets of tennis, it was the most convenient option. All of the staff that we dealt with at the resort did a good job. There was still some construction going on which made parking somewhat problematic. So, we opted for valet parking. The bottom line is for lodging, restaurant and especially the tennis the wife was happy. Enough said.

Wonderful experience

I couldn't wait to review this resort. The night before leaving for La Costa I found this site. I was horrified to read what others had to say about a place I was already booked into. What a absolutely pleasant surprise to find out for myself that the foul complaints were a bunch of baloney. Our room was beautiful and clean, clean, clean. The bed was heavenly. The bathroom was well laid out and beautiful and modern and again, clean, clean, clean. The service was first rate, friendly, accomodating and fast. The location is like a fairy land, fabulously relaxing with breathtaking views. Wish to go back.
