Historical Traveller Reviews of Marriott San Francisco Airport Hotel

Good Arrival or Departure Hotel

from mykel67
We stayed at the Marriott for the first night of our getaway to San Francisco, as our flight was arriving at 11:30pm. The shuttle arrived to pick us up within 10 minutes of calling, and it was probably another 10 minutes before arriving at this bay side hotel. Check-in was quick, and soon we were having drinks and snacks in the lobby bar.

The room is pretty much what I would expect of an airport Marriott, however the soft goods are definitely in need of replacement - stains, small tears and signs of wear abound. Having now seen the view from the bay side of the hotel, I would definitely spend a little extra for one of those rooms if I were going to be there during daylight hours. Ours faced the parking lot/street, but that was okay as we were only there 10 hours.

We booked through the Marriott's own website for a rate of $124, including breakfast for two. This is a good deal, as the breakfast buffet is $15.95 per person. The food was of surprisingly good quality.

Overall, it's a decent 3 1/2 star airport hotel - nothing more, nothing less.

Excellent Hotel

9/1-9/5/2005. Great location right by the ocean. Beautiful hotel and room. Nice staffs. Booked two rooms though priceline and requested adjoining rooms at check in with no problem. Only bad thing was the parking fee of $17.00 per night for self parking. I also liked the Guest laundry facility on the 4th floor.

Very Pleasant Experience

from NJpgd
As a Marriott Rewards member, I chose this location as a home base for a family vacation to the bay area - I was able to get more for my points and could get to many of the surrounding areas easily (Napa, Muir Woods, coastal highway, etc...). Additionally, the city was about 25 minutes away by car (or 30-35 min. by BART with the station being 1/2 mile from the hotel).

Our stay was very enjoyable...The rooms were nicely furnished, the staff was pleasant and had good recommendations for dining areas in/out of the City. There is a nice view of the bay in the lobby area where you can watch the planes while relaxing. The fitness center and pool area is spacious and well-equipped - one of the best I've seen at a Marriott. Parking could be a bit of a problem during busy periods, but that was never a big issue. The city of Burlingame itself has some surprisingly good places to eat, if you're looking for something quick.

If your plan is to spend more time in the city, I'd recommend a hotel in town, in which case you needn't worry about getting in/out via car. I could envision this hotel being somewhat overwhelmed by heavy convention or business conference traffic (which may have contributed to some of the negative reviews), but all-in-all my family and I had a very relaxing stay and would return.

s Ever

My husband and I are platinum Marriott Members which means we stay in excess of 75 room nights a year at Marriott Hotels and this is, without question, the worst hotel in the chain. The first room they checked us into was next to an ice machine, and had not yet been cleaned. The next room was clean but tiny. Two people couldn't walk past each other at the same time....and we are both petite people. The mattress had a hole in the middle which one of us invaribly fell into at night. The lighting was poor and the carpet dirty. The a/c was loud and the room smelled musty.

As for the airport shuttle, it showed up 20 minutes late and there were so many people that waiting that not every could fit on -- at 5:25 am! The driver was supposed to go by the Hyatt as well but the bellstaff demanded he go straight to the airport. He still tried to go to the Hyatt but one guest on-board walked up to the driver and asked if he was going to strap people to the hood because there wasn't even standing room available. Others onboard said that the shuttle FROM the airport had either bypassed them or shut the door in their face. So don't count on the free shuttle as transportation to SFO.

The room service food was delivered cold. The Concierge lounge was out of food during happy hour (supposedly 5 - 7) by 6 and put out one dessert offering at 7:30. One cake for a roomful of people. Very nice touch.

All in all a miserable experience.

t know where to begin!

ON a trip to SF we went through Priceline and got a room at this Marriott at an incredible price! Should have been my first HMMMMM. We were unfortunate to go to the Marriott when the (what seemed to be) entire IRISH FOOTBALL world championship teams were there. HUNDREDS of spoiled, uncontrolled kids everywhere! They forced the pool to be closed, ruined a conference room, were running through the restaurant, running up and down the halls ALL NIGHT. Not that the kids being there were Marriott's fault... the fact that nothing was being done to control these children WAS! Why they were not kicked out of this hotel was beyond me. You can't even imagine how bad it was!!! AND they make you pay for SELF parking on THEIR PRIVATE LOT! Very sad how bad this was!

Fine for a Quick Stay

from Upscaleduds
Stayed one night before a meeting started the next day. Just a hotel - not much to say. it was fine, I felt safe. One Bonus: as a Silver Marriott Rewards member, I received a free in-room movie. A couple restaurants in hotel - didn't look like much was a around except other hotels - I didn't see any restaurants within walking distance. Free shuttle from airport to hotel.

nice staff

We stayed only 1 nite on 6 July, but we're really happy with the room (big, clean and nice bay view). We arrived at the hotel after 10 pm, the staff was very nice and helpful, she gave the nice room (even we got very special rates from priceline).

The Perfect Place to Stay!

from LuvToLearn
We stayed here July 7-11, 2005 during our religious convention. It was a delightful stay. The staff treated us like royalty, responding to our needs immediately. Our room (with a window nearly the size of the wall) faced the bay. We enjoyed watching as planes touched down and departed from San Francisco International Airport. It was particularly impressive at night! The noise wasn't at all bothersome.
The room was bright, large, and extremely comfortable. There was a desk, a large closet (with mirrored doors), a TV, a hair dryer, a clock radio, an iron and ironing board, a coffeemaker with coffee, creamer, sugar and sugar substitute (we ran out of the above and they brought more right away), a newspaper delivered daily, toiletries, and lots of big, soft, towels. The bed, with its rich bedding, was very much appreciated.
There were complimentary apples in the lobby and in the gym/swimming pool/Jacuzi areas. They even had extra towels available.
On our last day, we received a printout of the charges and were able to check-out by following the directions on the TV! This was so convenient.
I would highly recommend staying here.

Not really any star

How could a hotel of such high calibre has as high disregard for paying guests?

I requested two beds but got one. Then I asked for an extra blanket--a very basic request--but got sheets instead. Please take note that it was simply a blanket, and not a comforter.

On a second matter regarding quiet hour, I called the operator at 10pm reporting a wall-rumbling and floor-thumping drum noise from below. One hour later at 11pm, I called a second time to ask if something could be done about the incessant "wall-rumbling and floor-thumping drum noise from below." Not until midnight did the noise stop.

Needless to say that it was a most unpleasant overnight stay.

I could understand the hotel not being able to guarantee a room with two beds, but could not, with my best effort, understand how as basic a request as an extra blanket and a reasonable quiet hour could not be met.

t Be Back!

This review pertains to our stay in June – 2005.

NEGATIVES: [Neg. Item 1] The room was somewhat narrow and the bathroom was incredibly tiny. Cheap looking counter, standard toiletries, low flow shower. [Neg. Item 2] Worn carpet that effected the rollers on the desk chair. [Neg. Item 3] The WORST mattress I have ever slept on. The sheets, pillows, and comforter are eye appealing but the mattress was so worn and soft. I had to lift the sheets to be sure it wasn’t foam. The collapse of the mattress was visibly present. [Neg. Item 4] Dark/dimly lit rooms. All my clothes & papers felt damp.

POSITIVES: Very close proximity to the SFO airport. Complimentary shuttle to the airport/BART subway. Shuttles run approx. every 15 minutes until midnight. Rooms on the water have a good view of the airport for those who love arriving/departing planes. As a warning, one runway perpendicular to the hotel does create a loud/vibratory thrust that can become annoying. There is a Starbucks onsite, however, open only during the morning. Allies Grille was a good alternative from the expensive JW Steakhouse. There are several restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Nothing fancy, however, there is a complimentary trolley bus to downtown Burlingame.

FINAL COMMENTARY: I chose this hotel as I try to earn Marriott points whenever possible. I have stayed at many airport Marriott hotels, unfortunately, this ranks as the worst in my experience. I just couldn’t believe some of the reviews posted on this website saying how good the rooms were. Perhaps I got a bad room, however, at $190/night, I definitely expected better. Would not stay here again. Check out the Hyatt or Bay Landings Hotel (both in Burlingame).

Top Local Tips for Burlingame

Room with a view Definitely ask for a room with a view of the airport. Watching the planes take off and land is pretty awesome.

Getting into San Francisco Burlingame has a great train stop with parking that will take you into downtown. I would highly suggest you use this instead of driving. The public transportation system in San Francisco is great and will get you everywhere. There is a 3 day pass and a all day pass that is worth the money. I had to drive into San Francisco because I had my handicapped father with me and it was a nightmare and took forever. Parking cost $35 for a couple of hours and unless you are use to driving in very heavy traffic I wouldn't try to drive.

surrounding restaurants Unless you plan to eat in the hotel(s), you'll have to travel abit to get to some nice restaurants. Take the East Millbrae Ave and cross over the Bayshore Freeway heading towards El Camino Real. At El Camino Real turn right ( heading towards San Fran). Its down this strip you'll find quite a few restaurants. If you like Dim Sum, head towards Zen Peninsula Restaurant. Its located at the corner of Center Street and El Camino Real. The parking can get hectic so park on the street. The food is reasonably priced for the quantity that you get. For a more accurate picture of the area, go to googleearth and follow the satellite map.
