The website of the Rose Garden Inn clearly states that all rooms have wireless Internet access. This is not true. The room we were shown had only cable access which is not the same. The manager gave a poor excuse by stating that they were in the process of converting from wireless to wired access. This is technically going backwards and unlikely. Furthermore, even though my wife and I are both technically adept, we could not get the cable access to work with either of our two computers. In addition, our room had no air conditioning. The day we saw the room was rather warm and the room was quite stuffy. For the amount we were charged, $162.40 ($145.00 plus tax), I would expect to have the ability to cool off my room to the level I wanted. According to the manager, none of the rooms had air conditioning. He went on to say that "no hotel room in Berkeley has air conditioning," and that if we leave there we will have to pay $250 for a room somewhere else. While stating that he, himself designed the webpage, he said that we were the first people to mention the lack of in room wireless access. I find this hard to believe. After getting a signed receipt saying we would not be charged for the room we promptly left. This inn does not represent itself honestly or offer good value in my opinion. Search discount websites. You can do better in Berkeley, Oakland or San Francisco.

Our website did indeed in one place mistate the wireless situation at the Rose Garden Inn. We do have wireless hi-speed available in our "public" areas and wired hi-speed in our deluxe level rooms. We changed the site as soon as we were made aware of the error. With regard to the wired hi-speed - most of our guests are able to use it without difficulty. This guest was indeed the first guest to point out the error in the site - hard to believe or not.

Our hotel does not have air conditioning. Most of the hotels in Berkeley do not. While it can get somewhat warm in the afternoons, people familiar with the Bay Area weather know that in the evenings it always cools down.

I realize that our Inn does not meet every travelers needs. That is why we graciously allowed this guest to leave without charge. I am sorry for the confusion with the web site, and their dissappointment and glad they found someplace that better suited thier needs.

t get a first floor garden room

Our Garden room was musty - I am allergic to mold and sneezed most of the night there. Parts of the garden were very attractive, but other parts were ramshackle. There was a lot of shoddy construction in outlaying rooms, most notably in a room adjoining the parking lot. Has this place been carefully inspected by the fire marshall? The staff was enthusiastic, breakfast was fine. I hope that other rooms were better than ours (entirely possible). If we give the place a second chance, we will definitely try a different room. Good pricing.

The Rose Garden Inn has 13 different room categories - so I do sincerely hope that this guest will give us another opportunity. I am personally checking all of the first floor garden rooms to ensure that they do not have a musty smell. We are currently working on several projects and some are only partially completed, including the patio area of the room by the parking lot. While the work is in process - I agree it does look shoddy. But rest assured, once completed, it will fit right in with the ambiance of our lovely Inn. We hope to have the current projects completed within the next month.

Just what we needed!

The Rose Garden Inn is exactly what we had in mind for a long-overdue vacation to the Bay Area and Wine Country. I have stayed here previously on business and finally had the opportunity to enjoy three nights here with my husband for our 20th anniversary. The staff was extremely helpful and the room was beautiful! I appreciate all the effort made to assure that our trip was memorable. As an educator, I feel rested enough to face my upcoming academic year!

Please don't believe the negative reviews written here...this inn reflects its own unique Berkeley charm and it shouldn't be any other way!

Berkeley charm

This is an older property, so one should not expect the antiseptic standards of a newer chain hotel. It is, however, clean and charming in an unpretentious and comfortable sort of way. Our accommodations in the main house were roomy and quiet. The beds and pillows were particularly cozy and smelled of freshly laundered linens. The breakfast buffet was generous and tasty.

The flower gardens in the front and rear of the property are beautiful. I only wish we'd had a little more time to linger and enjoy them fully. The off-street parking is limited, but we were able to find spots both nights of our stay.

We would definitely stay at the Rose Garden Inn again and would recommend it to friends.

B is not being maintained

I had high hopes based on the reviews and the pictures. Don't be mislead! This wonderful Victorian is not being maintained. The maintenance they have done is shoddy and not in keeping with the style of the home. The pictures don't seem to be current and don't really show you the rooms as they are now.

The place is clean for sure, but pretty tacky and a bit creepy I would say.

I could not stay there and ended up leaving even though I had to pay for my room. That tells you how bad it was.

I was sorry to see that we had disappointed this guest, although I was surprised by the review. The vast majority of our guests find our property charming and return time and time again to enjoy both our accomodations as well as our beautiful gardens.

With regard to the pictures, the web site was re-designed less than a year ago, and all of the pictures on the site were new at that time. In my two years here at the Rose Garden - "creepy" is certainly not a word I have heard used to describe our Inn. It is not our policy to charge guests, that choose not to stay with us because they do not like their accomodations. If indeed we did charge this guest, if they had conacted me, the charges could have easily been reversed.

Our whole team here at the Rose Garden Inn takes great pride in our property and the service we provide. That being said, as with all hotels, I'm sure that we are not for everyone. I wish this guest good luck in finding accomodations that better suits their needs.

A sanctuary in the city!

We were so pleasantly surprised by this cute Bed and Breakfast. It is located right on Telegraph, within walking distance to dowtown, campus, etc. We had to stay in an "Original Room" becuase everything else was booked solid. The room was definitely old and left you wanting, but the hotel overall was so nice, with a beautiful courtyard in the center full of flowers and tables. The breakfast in the morning is really superb, and they even have cookies and tea in the afternoon. The staff was friendly, and I would definitely stay here again in the future - I would just try to get a newer room next time.

Mediocre at Best

I stayed at the Rose Garden Inn for one night on April 3. The internet reservation process through IHOTELIER was quite smooth. My rate was $139.00 plus taxes for a total of $155.68 I stayed in Garden Room 204. Here is what is best: the entire operation is clean, no complaints there. The (Queen?) size bed was quite comfortable. Ample pillows and linens. The TV worked (for the 10 minutes that I watched it). The included breakfast buffet works just fine. All your standard American fare. Fresh and tasty. The staff were friendly and helpful. I voiced my complaints (as follows) and they told me that the hotel is slowly being renovated. Pronto, pronto.

Here are my gripes: My room was certainly in need of renovation. The front door is broken and needs to, literally, be slammed, in order to lock. The bathroom is utterly without charm. The floor is a sickly brown linoleum. The tub (which is clean and works well with ample hot water), is looking quite shabby (a decorative ring around the faucet is craked and remains unrepaired). The dressing area is shabby. The entire enterprise seems to be seedy and falling apart, it has seen far better days. It is not a "boutique" hotel, although it would like to be and with a few hundered thousand it might well be. Did I mention it seems like everything needs to be painted?

This could be a very, very charming place but someone will have to spend some money to make it so. Then, it will cost more, but probably be worth it.

I discovered the Rose Garden Inn two years ago on a vacation to the Bay area, and this time I stayed for almost a week while here for business. The facilities are exceptional, beautifully landscaped, and centrally-located. Breakfast is simply fabulous and is included in the price. I also appreciated the internet service. The staff is exceptional, and I cannot thank Tricia enough for all of her assistance. I will return again and again.

This is an appealing, conveniently located inn, occupying an entire block, only about a ten-minute walk from campus. The room was clean, quiet, and attractive. I'm not a big fan of Victorian countryesque decor, but found it charming and not tacky--good quality spreads, curtains, etc. Views of rose trellises and bamboo. The breakfasts were excellent. Wouldn't say the staff was particularly friendly or helpful, but had no dealings w/ them apart from checking in and out. One light was a bit dicey. The two parking lots are small and fill up at night, but street parking was easy. Otherwise, highly recommended. The location is a real plus, about 5 blocks down Telegraph from Sather Gate. And even if you wouldn't want your daughter to get married under the cupid statue in the courtyard, it makes a nice change from the generic hotel room.

We stayed one night when our home was having a water issue...They took us in at 8:30 pm, carried our luggage, let us choose our room and gave us cookies. My 3 kids loved it and our room easily comfortably fit us all (room for 6!) Breakfast was fine but not high service. I am going to recomend this hotel to every out of town guest.

Our rate was 149...an amazing bargain when you count breakfast for 5!

Getting Lost - Don't I like to believe that I have an innate sense of direction that leads me to safety when I am lost and helps me to find misplaced goods. Unfortunately, it is often after hours of misguided driving, overturning, and "Ah-Ha"-ing, that I will admit maybe that's one little belief in denial. Anyway, more than once, in fact, many many times more than once, I found myself lost in the ghettos of Oakland, after only moments before I had been cruising down Telegraph Avenue. At one point, I stopped (against the strongly worded suggestions of my counterpart) and asked directions of an elderly man on crutches at the stop sign. (Maybe that should have been a sign ? Idk) He gave me some directions to the freeway, which he said would get me "safely out of here". He advised me not to "stop again; just keep moving" and chuckled as we drove away. I listened. Unfortunately, it was only one notch on a tattered bedpost of stops we had to make in one ghetto after another. The Moral : Bring a map.

Take advantage of what's on offer Cal Performances, at the university, offers something wonderful on most evenings of the year. Also check out what 's on at Berkeley Repertory Theater -- probably the best theater in the SF Bay Area.
