Some nice touches, some disorganization

We stayed here for two days, very pleasant. The hotel is in a very nice setting, with some nice walks around the marina/coast. It is a little way out of Berkeley itself. The hotel does have a free shuttle to take you up to town - but there can be quite a wait for it on the way back (we waited 45 mins). I had also pre-arranged a pick up for a group of us on the second day. Even though I arranged this *weeks* in advance, confirmed the day before, and confirmed with the driver in the morning who dropped me off, they still forgot. When I called they ummed and ahhed before finally saying they'd send someone, but would have to call me back to let me know when. They told me someone would be there in 45-50 mins - but that was 1/2 hour after they were meant to be there to start with. We had people headed out to catch planes, so no good for us - we had to make other arrangements.

My credit card was also charged for a movie watched after I checked out - I left three messages with accounts over two weeks and never got a call back. Finally I got a very nice woman at the front desk to take care of it for me (and she was very efficient).

As to the hotel itself, I found it very pleasant. We didn't have a room with a marina view (I believe they are more expensive) and we were in one of the older wings. Still the rooms were very nice. Everything was very clean. It didn't look run down at all - although the corridors in the other (newer) wings look slightly nicer (but then who hangs out in the corridors?).
The light switch in the bathroom is lit. This makes it very easy to find at night! It also gives off enough light that you can use it as a night-light when using the bathroom at night. There's nothing more jarring than having to turn on the harsh florescent lighting at 3am!
The beds were very comfortable, although I'm not sure we had the "sweet dreams" pillows they were advertising.
The room was nice and spacious, and all rooms have a balcony. At night it was very quiet (and I'm quite a light sleeper). If the beeping noise was beeping I didn't hear it. My friend in the next room did complain about a noisy family (with small children) who were in the room next to her, so maybe there is some sound if you have loud neighbours.
There is a business center with free internet access which was very convienent. They also have a nice pool and hot tub, and some pleasant areas for just sitting and relaxing. We did notice there seems to be a relatively cheap early dinner at the hotel restarant, but we weren't there at the right time to check it out.

I would definately stay here again.

Hit and Miss

This hotel is hit or miss, even for a Hilton Gold member. My fiancee and I stayed in this hotel this past weekend for a wedding and they upgraded us to a Parlor Suite in the new building. The suite was enormous with a living area, dining area, and separate bedroom. They did not have chocolate chip cookies for us at greeting - Doubletree's unique gift upon check-in.

The time before, we were upgraded to an average room in the new building, but the hotel made an error in our pre-reserved room rate.

While walking through the halls to the conference center, it is clear that the older buildings are in major need of renovation. I would not want to stay in one of the older rooms.

Although the hotel continually stresses its ideal location, you should not expect a marina view. The large majority of rooms do not have this view.

Finally, there is a persistent beep, 24 hours a day, to notify boats they are nearing the marina, in the event of fog. Although there is an explanation for this posted at the front desk, the sound can be distracting if you are a light sleeper.

The restaurant is above average for a Doubletree. It has very nice marina views and an excellent Sunday brunch.

disorganized at front desk from the moment we arrived. we were not given our internet confirmed room with king bed and view of marina. person at desk was not helpful in obtaining correct room. finally spoke to manager who found us a room with a marina view. sink was badly cracked in bathroom, carpet in elevator was dirty and unvacuumed for our two day stay. the soft drink machine in our building was out of order. our room didn't get cleaned until six p.m the second day because the cleaning staff was told we were checking out after the first night. on the upside, the view is beautiful, if you get it. and they gave us chocolate chip cookies whenever we asked.

I was absolutely AMAZED at how poorly maintained this property was. As a frequent business traveler, I have had the opportunity to stay in hundreds of branded hotels and the Doubletree Hotel Berkeley Marina was deplorable. The room was filthy (worn out furnishings/bedding) musty & dirty smells throughout, including the hallways. The shocker came when I saw what horrible condition the A/C unit was in. The control panel was covered in oily dirt and the air fins were covered in months of dust. It was so bad that I wrote a formal complaint letter to the Hilton Hotel Corp. (have had no response from them after nearly a month and a half). If anybody doubts what I am writing here, I have color digital photos of the condition of the A/C unit that I would be more than happy to share.

I travel on business about once a month on the average.

I was visiting the UC Berkeley campus and the hotel location is great for campus access.

The room was average with nice decor. I ordered room service and it was served quickly and the food was great. Mmmm, Mmmm.

I'd stay again.

A very nice stopover

The Double Tree was nice in that the room was spacious and the view of the marina was exceptionally nice. An easy hiking trail is within a hundred yards to the west and provides a very scenic view of the bay, San Francisco skyline, and interesting kite flyers. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only drawback was the marina buoy makes a sound every half minute or so and can keep you awake at night unless you keep the fan on in the room, then is okay. The pool was a disappointment in that the chlorine or other cheicals were so strong it turned my sons brand new swimsuit a different color, and both my sons were in great pain in their eyes even though they did not open them under water. I would stay there again, but I wish they would tone down the chemicals in the pool.

Oh yes. The houskeeping staff were EXTREMELY freindly, polite, and very willing to supply extra towels etc.

An Unfortunate Mistake

My wife and I planned a get-away vacation following a lot of hard work and the marriage of one of our sons. We mistakenly thought that the Doubletree brand meant quality at all locations. What a disappointment to walk into a dark, musty 1970's wing and room. The lobby, restaurant and bar were equally worn out and uninviting. This is not the place to stay for a couple looking to relax, be a little spoiled by good service and recharge their spirits.

double check your reservation

in august 2003, I had booked on the internet at a favorable rated for three night. When we arrived, they had lost our reservation (also I showed them a paper copy) and offer a room at a much higher price. Eventually they gave us what had been booked. They have a handy indoor swimming pool. Dont even think of going there if dont have a car.

My husband and I spent four nights at the Doubletree Berkeley Marina recently and really liked it. The location was both scenic and convenient--a short drive to the UC campus/downtown Berkeley area and an even shorter one to the great 4th Street shops and cafes or the Marina restaurants; plus one of the main local freeways (580 to Oakland/San Francisco) invisible from the hotel, but a stone's throw away. We enjoyed the view from our room of the marina and the Berkeley hills and one night when my husband's back was giving him trouble, he soaked it away in the jacuzzi and I took a refreshing late night dip in the indoor pool. Because we were pinching pennies, we avoided the hotel restaurant, assuming it was expensive. On our last morning, though, my husband went down to look at the menu and was pleasantly surprized. We ate a great breakfast, received excellent service, and had fun watching the activity on the marina--all at a reasonable price. My only complaints are that the bathroom was a little tight on space and lacked a fan.

When you have some time.... - Shops and cafes io nearby 4th Ave and U California Botanical Garden

Visit the Gourmet Ghetto Head to North Berkeley, especially north of Shattuck and Cedar. You'll find the best food stores and restaurants. Of course, there is always Chez Pannise. But don't miss the Cheeseboard (Bakery & Pizza), Barney's, Gregoire's, and the new Food Annex with the mini Kirala and the Soup store.

This hotel is not within walking distance to downtown Berekley If you are wanting to walk and not drive around Berkeley this is not the place for you. It is not close to Cal, the Greek Theater or downtown.
