Poor Man's Carmel Benicia's Main Street is a historic Gem that each year is more gentrified. Jack London & U.S.Grant drank away their youths at Main St. waterfront bars before moving on to Oakland and Ohio- respectively. California's early anglo civic leaders named the town after Gen. Vallejo's wife (the last Mexicano Gov. who, at one point, was kidnapped by said leaders' associates over a real estate deal--give up California in exch for your life). Pre- Civil War Grant served with Sherman at the Benicia Arsenal. Sherman wrote of Grizzly Bears shot for sport as they swam the waters off Benicia while Grant's drinking led to his being drummed out of the pre-civil war Army. The first state capitol stands where legislature debated the merits of digging in at Benicia versus moving on to next realestate deal in marshy mosquito infested Sakamento.
