Historical Traveller Reviews of La Posada Hotel
An Oasis in the desert

This was a wonderful place to stay and the accomodations were EXCELLENT. The hotel is fascinating with a lot of history. Much/Most/All of the accessable part of the hotel has been redone and done well with first rate building materials. We actually stayed at the Hotel twice on the same trip. Concerns about the trains are overblown and really completely unfair. The trains go very slow though town and the horns are blown "gently." There are many trains, but they did not bother us at all and were not a factor in getting a great night sleep. We were in a downstairs suite with the Jacuzzi bath. The room I would say was in new condition. They show too many old photos on the web site which does not fairly demonstrate the wonderful condition the hotel is in TODAY!
I read another review that commented that there are no elevators or bellman. This is true. If you have issues from taking your luggage to your own room, you may wish to call to see if they can help you.
The restaurant was wonderful. I would rate it an 8.5 out of 10 with 10 being a top notch restaurant in Los Angeles. On the other hand, the restaurant was a 10 of all the restaurants between Los Angeles and Santa Fe.
If you have reasonable expectations, you will love this hotel.

La Posada is a great place to visit and stay if you like trains. Really, the noise isn't all that bad. I stayed here several years ago in the "Carole Lombard Room", on the upper floor and overlooking the tracks which are just about 100 feet to the south and went to sleep with the music of the passing freight trains and slept very well, thank you.
The rooms have been restored to their original , rustic appearance and very well furnished. The only drawbacks are the lack of room 'phones and no swimming pool. The rest of the hotel is interesting in its beamed ceiling in the ball room, wrought iron staircases and other combinations of art deco and Spanish architecture. We have also had dinner in the Turquoise Dining Room on our 2002 trip and lunch in 2004. The dining room has also been lovingly restored with its original chandeliers and stained glass window decorating one wall. Food and service were to be recommended and the prices were quite reasonable. The Prime Rib was one of the best we've eaten anywhere.
The brick concourse facing the tracks is a very pleasant place to watch the trains. A suggestion would be to take the AMTRAK from either direction and spend a night at La Posada. The AMTRAK "Southwest Chief" stops at Winslow in the morning going eastbound to Gallup, Albuquerque and points east to Chicago and in the late evening to Flagstaff, Kingman, Needles and points west to Los Angeles.
If you are not all that fond of trains, the TraveLodge just a mile or so west on Third Street, is a good choice. It's been around for some time, too, and was once the Town House Motel. It's a rambling, western style architecture motel with all rooms at ground level with parking at your door. Although it is one of the older motels in Winslow, we have always found the rooms to have been updated over the years, well kept and well furnished on all of our trips. The swiming pool is especially pleasant and there is a laundry room adjoing the pool, so you can wash the clothes while you take a dip in the pool.Unfortunately the restaurant adjoining the motel was closed on a recent trip. The restaurant had good service, good food and a friendly waiter-manager who entertained us with a few bars from "Standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona."
Both La Posada and TraveLodge are great places for stopping overnight or a few days while exploring Route 66. Rates are very reasonable at both places.

Wish we could have stayed another night

We stopped for dinner on a trip through the Southwest and liked the hotel so much that we stayed the night. It is a wonderful hotel - by far the most interesting we stayed in during an 8 night visit to the Southwest. The restoration of the hotel is very impressive - I felt like I was back in time but with the modern amenities. We are definitely planning to go back and will be recommending LaPosada to friends. The owners are to be commended for their meticulous restoration of one of the great hotels designed by Mary Colter for the Harvey Hotel chain.
A beautiful hotel in a suprisingly beautiful spot

La Posada, designed by the late great architect Mary Colter, was the flagship hotel of the Santa Fe Railroad/Fred Harvey Company for many years. Following the demise of passenger trains in the 50's, it was converted to an office building for the ATSF, before being lovingly restored in the 1990s.
The discerning traveler will appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the hotel and the comfort and elegance of the rooms, the gourmand will appreciate the dining room (The Turquoise Room) The light sleeper will *not* be bothered by the freight trains - this is a substantially built structure designed to be soundproof.
Winslow is a wonderful little town - full of great little shops and boutiques.
The best way to approach La Posada is, in my opinion, on Amtrak's Southwest Chief. Only then will you get an appreciation for what it must have been like in the 1930's. It's only an overnight train ride from either Chicago or LA - you get in at 6am if coming from LA and about 8pm if coming from Chicago - after a day of viewing some amazing scenery.
La Posada is one of the world's truly great hotels. Don't miss a chance to stay here.

We just returned from a trip that included a night stay at LaPosada. It was absolutely wonderful! It is a gorgeous facility that has been lovingly restored. It is spacious in the sleeping rooms and the public rooms and gardens and grounds. We slept with windows open and enjoyed the sounds of the trains. We had a celebratory dinner in the restaurant-start with corn and black bean soup! We could easily spend a week there. If you have time watch the video about the renovation or better yet buy one and help out.

We first heard about the restoration of La Posada in a story on National Public Radio several years ago and decided our next trip to the Southwest would include a stay. Anyone who enjoys Southwest design and architecture will love this place. Stay long enough to roam the hotel and spend time sitting in the many pleasant nooks, verandas, patios, and gardens. The restaurant is wonderful with excellent food and service.
A hotel that must be seen to be believed

This is such a unique hotel that it is hard to discribe. I felt that I was staying at a friend's hacienda, filled with interesting rooms in which to comfortably lounge. There are books that you may borrow, and a lovely garden to sit and read. The gift shop has many "treasures" and a fine restraurant in which to dine. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated, and restored to their "old charm". But it is the whole house (hotel) that is filled with this "old charm". We met a couple that came to dine, and remained several hours to lounge, watch a video about the reconstruction, and to look through several books regarding the area. It is worth a trip to Arizona just to stay at this hotel.
A lovely place

We stayed the night of May 8, 2004 in the Dorothy Lamour Room. The room was uniquely furnished, a good size & most comfortable. The only complaint I had was that the window coverings were inadequate & therefore, the early morning light was in our eyes as soon as the sun came up.
The hotel is lovely & wonderful to tour through while marvelling at the furnishings & paintings.
It is unfortunate that they don't have an elevator because you have to carry your luggage up a winding staircase to the second floor. When we were checking in ... an older couple upon learning of this cancelled their stay.
And I must confess my husband wasn't too impressed by this turn of events either but he perservered & the doctor said his hernia can be safely treated by wearing a girdle :+)

Our Mother Road homage ended with a stay at La Posada and it was enchanting. Although I had reserved the Howard Hughes room on-line, they had switched us to the Albert Einstein room instead with no explanation. I was initially perturbed, but was not disappointed with the room. It was on the first floor overlooking the sunken garden, spacious with 2 sitting areas and a step-up bathroom with jacuzzi tub. La Posada is a work in progress, a queen preparing to become a goddess! The entire hotel is gorgeous and it truly is similar to visiting an eccentric relative instead of being a guest in a hotel. The Turquoise Room serves well-prepared cuisine in an unhurried atmosphere. Please take the time to watch their video on the background of La Posada and the process of restoration. I'm planning to return to follow up on their progress (and hopefully stay in the Howard Hughes room!). And of course, La Posada accepts well-behaved dogs; Gus gives them 4 paws!
Enchanting property near

La Posada in Winslow, Arizona is a fascinating work in progress. Many of the rooms have been restored, as well as most of the interior. The exterior has not been fixed up yet, but it will be, so don't judge this book by its cover! This sprawling hotel is steeped in history. It was built originally for the passengers on the Santa Fe Railroad by a woman architect, Mary Colter, who also designed La Fonda in Santa Fe and several buildings at the Grand Canyon. As you walk through the hallsways and huge lobby areas it's easy to imagine what it was like to stay here in the 1920's. The hotel boasts a fabulous restaurant, the Turquoise Room, that serves southwestern-influenced food you will never forget. I stopped in here with a photography workshop I was taking in September and our group ate at the restaurant. I was so taken with the black bean, white corn chowder soup, I came back in February with my husband. The trains go by all the time but our room (Einstein) was insulated from the noise. It had a fabulous bathroom and was a huge room. The hotel has a martini bar which was closed when we were there the second time. It's really fun to go upstairs to the lounge where they keep a fire going in the fireplace and sit in one of the rockers. Winslow is a very small town that has seen better days, but the nearby Homolovi Ruins (well worth a visit) and Little Painted Desert, regular-sized Painted Desert, and Petrified Forest make it worth a stop during your travels in Northern Arizona. It is on famous Route 66. The rooms are extremely reasonable, around $70-80 a night. This property is like La Fonda in Santa Fe without the high prices and big crowds. You can't beat it for atmosphere.
