Historical Traveller Reviews of Windmill Suites at Saint Philips Plaza Hotel

Spacious room - a good find

from AlbionbytheSea
We stayed for two nights, a family of four, in a two room suite. The beds were doubles, not queens, so a little cozy. The room was excellent though. A true two room suite. The door opens into a living room (sofa, chair, coffee table, desk, TV) and kitchen alcove (sink, microwave, fridge, counter, 2 bar stools). The toilet, sink, bath/shower room is accessible from the kitchen or bedroom. The bedroom also had a vanity sink. We paid approx. $120/night incl tax. Room rate includes breakfast bar / european style with yoghurt, waffles, hardboiled eggs, toast, pastries, juice, coffee, fruit etc. Breakfast gets busy, so avoid arriving right before it closes (operates 6 - 9 am I recall). Great location approx., 2 miles north of University. No restaurant on site, but plenty in shopping centre it is located in - which is upscale and nicely decorated with christmas lights etc..

A comfortable and nice place to stay!

from bismuth
On our recent trip to Tucson Arizona, in the month of December, 2006, we stayed at the Windmill Inn at St Phillips Plaza. We have to say that we enjoyed our stay at this Hotel. The Staff were all friendly and the rooms were clean and comfortable. What a wonderful place to relax after a day of sightseeing. These rooms were Suites, so they are more roomy than your average Hotel room. What we liked most about this place was it's coziness. When you entered the Hotel room, you were in the living room. Off of the living room was a small rounded triangular area called the wet bar. What a nice little area to heat up leftovers or to fix yourself a snack. It had a small refrigerator with a side cabinet for your supplies, a small sink, pretty granite countertops with stools that seat two people and a small preparation area around the sink. We also liked having a living room where we could sit and relax. The bathroom had two sliding pocket doors, one leading from the living room to the bathroom, the second door leading into the bedroom. It was nice having a roomy bedroom with a additional television. The King Size bed was also very comfortable. In the morning, the Hotel offers a Continental Breakfast Buffet which offered fruit, cereal, make your own waffles, toast, bagels, yogurt, etc. Everything was nicely displayed and re-stocked as needed. Seating area for guests was nicely arranged. Another nice touch, Coffee and tea offered in different areas of the Hotel so that you may help yourself at all hours.

Since this is a Business area, traffic is often heavy. Construction on some streets are also going on at this time making getting around a bit more difficult and complicated. A suggestion for those who enjoy having a heathier meal, across the street from the Windmill Inn Suites is a Trader Joe's for groceries and snacks, and a friendly, yet casual place with healthy foods to eat called "Chopped". They offer soups, sandwiches and Custom salads which is hand chopped for you with ingredients that you choose yourself . Prices are moderate starting with soups at around $4.00, to salads and sandwiches starting at $6.99 and up depending on the ingredients and sandwiches that you choose.
Everything that we had, whether it was soup, a sandwich or salad, it was tasty and enjoyed.

In town for a meet

from kmjg
My 9th grader and I in town for a swim meet. Room was great location super...take a walk to trader jo's if you need snacks this hotel was super clean, spacious and hospitable. They have a great lending library catch up on a good book while you are there. I would stay here again!

Come and bring the family

from tripadviseeker
With 2 double beds and a double sofa bed - there's plenty of room for a family. There are 2 TV-s, and a door between the bedroom and living room to suit family differences.
Bonuses are : the computer with free internet near the lobby, free coffee/tea all day, bikes and books to borrow.
The only negative is that our room was a relatively long walk from the lobby. But the rooms are clean, and all smoke free, and the courtyard's pleasant design is a long way from motel 6 clones...
Enjoy! And while at it- try the Italian restaurant in the Plaza, not so cheap - but delicious.

Very professional management

from Barrie_D
We have just returned from a 5 week vacation in the United States and The Windmill was without doubt the best accommodation from a somewhat mixed bag of hotels and motels .
We were very impressed with our 5 night stay from the 17th September. The very professional approach of the management at this apartment hotel is obvious from the moment one arrives. The staff are polite, attentive and helpful, the apartments are well equipped and comfortable and like the public areas are very clean. One would be hard pressed to find any fault with their operation. We have every intention of staying at The Windmill during our 2007 vacation .

Pleased indeed at Windmill Inn

from paca57
We did a 2,200 mile road trip around the Southwest in August. I like out of town, quiet places with open land around, but my sweetheart had stayed here before and wanted to go back. It is in a busy part of the city, but has bike paths right behind it. I have to say, after staying in at least 8 hotels on the trip, I found this to be the best deal. Very nice, large, suite-like room, courteous, professional and smiling staff, clean, pool right off the room, very quiet considering the area, great morning breakfast included. Real touch of class. Highly recommended for midprice lodging!

Most Dog Friendly Place!

from withoutscreenname
I have become an authority on Windmill Inn at St. Phillip's Plaza in Tucson. We found out that our dog had cancer in late April 2006 and were referred to Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialists on 141 E Ft. Lowell, Tucson (we live in Las Vegas). I found the Windmill Inn on the internet and was hesitant to stay there as it listed a high quote on the web page for the room. I decided to call, however, as they listed "pet friendly" and have access to a great trail. Since we were going to intermittantly be spending about 3-4 weeks there in Tucson, I decided to call. I was most impressed from the first phone call..."sure we love to have dogs stay with us and even give them a treat bag upon check-in" and their rates were MUCH lower than on the web page.

Let me list the perks: every single person working there from housekeeping to front desk was the most friendly and helpful ever; they do love dogs and have one wing closest to the walking trail for dogs;their rates are reasonable; they have very clean and nice rooms (they aren't 5 star but they are much better than one would expect for the price); the rooms come with a little microwave and dorm size refrigerator (some rooms are more spacious than others but all are roomy); they have warm, baked cookies in the afternoons; they have 24/7 coffee available; did I mention how nice they are-they help with dinner recommendations, directions in town, helped us change to quieter rooms (I don't sleep well on the lower floors b/c of persons walking above); they have the "standard" continental breakfast but also have waffles; plenty of parking; and great location. There is a fitness room, also. There is a beautiful pool and spa but the dogs aren't allowed in the courtyard area. They don't allow dogs in the lobby area either but didn't yell when our dogs went through the automatic lobby door once. They always asked how our dog was doing and would come out to see him. As an aside, if your pet has cancer, go to Dr. Klein at Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialists (well worth the 7.5 hr drive from Vegas)! We felt truly cared for by all at Windmill Inn, they got to know us by first name basis and there is a reason that they have a "regular, return crowd". Don't stay anywhere else if you want a nice, quiet, reasonably priced suite where they treat you like you are part of their family.

The walking trail is immediately behind the inn and goes on for miles by the Riilto River Wash. There is no water in the spring/summer but there is shade in the early am and evening. Great for walking dogs. You can even see many bats fly out towards the west at sunset from under the bridge going over to the Trader Joe's across the street. There is also a bakery (Abygails), a fine wine store (58 degrees) and a gourmet restaurant (Vivace's-they will also do carry out) all in the plaza. The plaza is lovely and also has spas, shopping, etc. If we ever go back to Tucson, we'll stay there, wish they were nationwide!!!!!

Good value

from midnightblues
This hotel offers very good value and clean spacious rooms. The hotel is allegedly 100% smoke free, but unfortunately during the week I was there it had its share of inconsiderate self-centered smokers who felt that the rules shouldn't apply to them. At times the hallways and room smelled of smoke, and the smokers in the rooms below mine and next to mine felt that they had a right to smoke in their rooms as long as they walked over to the window to blow the smoke through the screen... I noticed them both doing that as I returned to the hotel from the parking lot on several occasions, and I have a hunch they later didn't even bother to blow the smoke out the window anymore... I guess they feel that no smoke comes from the tips of burning cigarettes so that blowing the smoke out the window keeps the room smoke free, or they don't realize that some people get serious respiratory problems from residual smoke and come to a smoke free hotel for health reasons.... But it's probably that those smokers couldn't care less about other guests..

Other than the smokers who refused to obey the rules and felt it was their right to be inconsiderate, the hotel was really nice. If it could ever REALLY be smoke free, it would be my hotel of choice in the area. It's still better than most hotels when it comes to cigarette smoke, but it's not smoke free. Next time I stay there I think I'll just rat the smokers out to the front desk so they get hit with the big room cleaning fee...(smile)

Fantastic Hotel - The very best employees

from EasyRider74
My wife and I stayed at this hotel from June 2-7 and we had a very pleasurable experience. The hotel is in a fairly central location inside Tucson so it's relatively easy to get around. There are nice shops within walking distance including places to grab a quick bite to eat. If you have a car you will have even more options as there are plenty of restaurants nearby including a big mall within 10 minutes or so. The hotel grounds are maintained and there are some nice mountain views as well. We walked the exercise path behind the hotel in the early morning hours before it became too hot. One of the days we used bicycles provided by the hotel. There was no charge and they even provided helmets. Not a bad deal in our book. Our room was clean and well maintained. We had a fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and plenty of cool A/C. The bathroom was very clean as well.

The front desk staff was mainly who we interacted with and they were absolutely fantastic. They answered a ton of questions we had about the area (we are relocating to Tucson) including discussing areas of town, places to eat, and ways to get around by car. They showed enthusiasm for their jobs and remained professional at all times even when besieged by mobs of guests. Antonia, Mark, Claire, Linda...the list goes on and on. The management here has a special staff.

A big plus for this hotel was the free wireless access. No laptop? No problem! They have a computer room available for the guests. Another bonus for people like me was the 4:00 cookies time. Fresh from the oven!

The breakfast at the Windmill was clearly a weak point to us. Not a lot of healthy options (no skim milk, bananas not always on hand) as waffles, cheap bagels, and syrupy OJ ruled the day. I realize this must be a cost effective way for the hotel to serve breakfast but there have to be better and healthier ways to invest in some quality food. Do yourself a favor and use that fridge they gave to you - store your own breakfast items. Run over to the Trader Joes and grab some nuts and a fruit salad. Hit the "Chopped" salad store across the street and pick up some veggies. And store a couple of gallons of water from Walgreens in your room for those hot Tucson days. Those were our problem solvers. Anyway, outside of breakfast, there were no other glaring weaknesses for this hotel.

The Windmill was a really good deal. We paid a under $100 a night and we received 5-star treatment from the staff. Their very impressive effort, the quality facility and all of the intangibles earns this hotel a 5-star rating from us.

Wonderful hotel, terrible breakfast.

from laberlugane
We have been coming to Tuscon for ten years but this was the first time we stayed at the Windmill.
This is a wonderful hotel and a great location.
The staff is friendly and very professional.
The suites are very comfortable but not actually suited for a longer stay. We spent a week there and found the closet/hanging space totally inadequate. cannot hang more than three things .
Noise can be an issue, The Philips Plaza likes to clear its sidewalks with a leaf blower between 5 and 6 in the morning and the Acacia restaurant has an incredibly lound jazz band on week ends which makes it impossible to listen to your tv even with the windows closed

The low point is breakfast, it is simply very bad and unhealthy. I longed for a good cup of coffee in something other than styrofoam. After all this was not exactly McDonald's prices.
The breakfast space was often too crowded, even at 7, it was hard to get a table.
It seemed to be run by poorly trained high school cafeteria employees.
That said some guests seemed to enjoy the chemical waffles with margarine and sugary syrup.
After a day of this we walked accross the street to Trader Joe's and bought ourselves some decent cereals, english muffins and good jam.
To make matter worse they would run out of things,on our fourth day they ran out of butter and it was never seen again. It was margarine or cheap grape jam. They also ran out of bananas one day out of two.we longed for fruit cups.
Super 8, where we stay when we just need to sleep and shower near an airport does a better job !

Top Local Tips for Tucson

cave creek go to cave creek for a day it really is a cool place.

Tohono Chul Park and Tea Room Restaurant has tasty and well-priced selection in lovely garden setting or air-conditioned inside . Check calendar for live music performances. Park has wide variety of cacti, flora and fauna. Museum (air-conditioned) exhibits works of talented local artists. Greenhouse offers native plants for sale. Check hours before going; it is not open late.

You must visit Mt. Lemmon! If you do nothing else, I highly recommend driving to the top of Mt. Lemmon. The elevation is 9,000 feet, and you will experience spectacular views. You start out in the desert, and by the time you get to the top, you may encounter snow! It will take a couple of hours, but it is well worth your time.
