Historical Traveller Reviews of The Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa Tucson Hotel

Fantastic hotel!

from charliesmum
Stayed here at the end of May 04 at the end of a tour round Arizona and it was definately the best hotel of the trip. Great size room, lovely bathroom and truly heavenly beds!

Food was delicious and we found the service to be friendly throughout the hotel. Our five year old loved the pools and slide and was happy to spend some time in the kids club. The place was packed at the weekend, but it was practically empty come the Monday & Tuesday we were there. There were some conference guests, but you'd hardly notice they were there.

We were particularly impressed with the stunning flora & fauna around grounds, including wonderful cacti which are illuminated at night. Also, it's not every day you spot a humming bird drinking from a fountain.

Highly recommended!

Great rooms, poor service

Stayed at the Westin for four nights in June 2004. Two friends stayed the first night and although we made one booking for all four of us, we were at opposite ends of the resort, and this is a big place. We had a suite for the first two nights and then moved to a regular room. Room/suite were great - excellent beds and bathroom. Bell staff very good.

Pool area crowded and spoiled by VERY noisy guitar player/singer all day - do not get a room by the pool, the noise will drive you mad.

Food at the J-Bar and the Desert Garden Bistro was excellent, but we had terrible service at the Desert Garden Bistro one night, and pool service was also bad. We were also charged twice for one glass of wine at the Desert Garden Bistro and our food order was wrong poolside. Not impressive for a resort of this supposed quality.

Beware if you are a smoker - no bar where you can smoke, and the J-Bar does not allow smoking on the dining patio.

I get the impression this place is only interested in corporate guests - their noisy evening events certainly spoiled things. We also stayed at Westward Look, and although it's smaller in scale and rooms are perhaps not as nice, it had a less corporate feel, and is better for vacationers.

Sometimes these big hotels are great on facilities but let down by service. Reading others' reports it seems we were not the only ones irritated by this.

Heaven in the desert

My wife and I recently stayed at the Westin La Paloma Resort in Tucson AZ. We had previously stayed at the Loew's Ventana Canyon Resort and thought that nothing could outdo it's beauty, but we were wrong. The La Paloma resort is even better, and the staff absolutely wonderful. The resort is much more user friendly, especially the multiple pool area with swim up bar and adults only sections. The 27 hole golf course has some of the most breathtaking views on any course I have been on and at the same time provides a tough but fair challenge to the ordinary golfer.

The food is absolutely delicious, regardless of which restaurant you visit, and the portions are more than generous. If you can have a dinner for three hundred people, and still receive a steak cooked to order, you know that you have a great cooking staff.

All in all, La Paloma is one of the best resorts I have visited anywhere in the world.

We had a womderful stay these past two nights! Everyone at the resort was friendly and helpful. The spa facilities were great! Grounds were pretty, rooms amply sized and cozy. Definitely will be staying there again!

Wonderful Hotel!

We stayed at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson in March. We travel quite frequently, but have never been in Tucson before. We loved the hotel! The rooms are detached from the main hotel with wonderful restaurants, shopping, and meeting rooms. The staff was very friendly. This was one of my favorite places. Only thing I could say was irritating was the usual problem of getting down early to the pool to make sure you get a chair. Forget it on weekends. Otherwise, you will love it.

Tucson is an excellent Resort Community - especially with Westin La Paloma

Tucson isn't for everyone......nor is Vail, Palm Springs, Laguna, etc.
But Tucson is absolutely one of the most wonderful Resort Communities I've traveled too. I'm an advid golfer, play in tons of tournaments, travel coast to coast and abroad, and when I landed at the Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa for the first took my breath away.
The entire arrival experience made in in "awe". The mountain views, the terrain around my guestroom, gave me the perfect desert experience and exceeded my expectations. I played their Jack Nicklaus Signature course, which in my opinion could rival any top course including Pebble Beach. If you get a chance to go to Tucson, don't pass up the chance to stay at the Westin. It's #1~

Like Everything Else in Tucson . . .

Tucson is, oh how should I put it, a dump for the most part. There is no grass anywhere and all desert. If you go to Tucson go for the desert climate. Not a pretty city at all, but to the Westin. The Westin is a great hotel, but lacks the qualities of most 5 star hotels. The service is good, but not exemplary. The food is good, but not out of this world. Finally, the rooms are well appointed but feel older, however the heavenly beds are wonderful. I recently purchased 5 for my guestrooms. I love the Westin pools, but do not pay the 4-5 times market price at the restaurant. If you like French you must go to Le Rendezvous, excellent. All in all Westin La Paloma is a best place in Tucson, and if you must go then it is the best place to stay.

Star treatment!

I stayed at the Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa in April of 2003 and was treated like a first-class special guest. Excursion planning was a breeze and staff was exceptional. Pool area was breathtaking, as well as the view from my personal balcony. Food presentation and taste was extraordinary, and cocktail area had beautiful grand piano with pianist to play my requests. Mall shop staff was very friendly and very eager to please. This resort is on the top of my list for another visit in the near future. Exquisite!

You can hear every footstep of neighbors!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had a terrible sleep-even though beds were comfy-because our upstairs neighbor seemed to be stomping around...just the fault of the fairly, old Westin...then the service staff was wheeling carts near the doors and the floor is concrete-and so noisy again and at an early 7:00am. We had no problem with the service-check in and bell staff were fine-but we didn't need the bell cart-could easily have walked to our room with our wheeled cases. The health club staff are snobby-why? Did not like the much touted "Janos" restaurant-the wine list was just okay- a decent chardonnay (normally $7.00) was $12.00 a glass and the food was not fantastic and entrees were $30 and up-our waitress was SO serious.
Breakfast was fine-and the waitress was great. Be careful of a series of rooms that face the mountain, there is a road you overlook that has lots of traffic-I would have my earplugs on for sure.

Would stay again-if able to book same rate.

from twozies
We would stay again due to great rate. We stayed in for 3 nights March 2003 to visit family and we were able to book government rate on internet which surprised us as it is a resort and we went peak season. We would have been disappointed if we paid more as we hit a cold spell-rainy and windy. Could not swim or golf. We walked around the course which was nice but construction in area detracted from mountain views. Would have liked to use the pools and pool bar but the bar was not open due to inclement weather. The pols were heated but still too chilly to swin. We were able to use outdoor heated whirlpools. Our room was clean, attractively decorated and spacious. Did not have any problem w/ smoke or room temperature as indicated in another review. Not overly impressed w/ Red Door Salon Spa on site. Paid a fortune for services-you clearly pay for the location and decor. Pay far less for more pampering at home. Would not use spa again. The relaxation qucikly vanished when we received our bill. Some good restuarants in the area surrounding the hotel. Only dined onsite once-excellant meal. Main complaint was fitness center-it is a health club open to non guests it was always busy-staff at fitness center not friendly.

Top Local Tips for Tucson

Sonoma County Desert Museum A small outdoor museum, excellent for adults or children. Just right for a 2 hour tour (enough time for the sun and heat). Worth seeing

good food- JBar and Blanco are great eats!

Sabino Cyn SABINO CYN (6 miles from WLP): Taking the tram up is a “must-do”. Hiking the 1 hour short trail at the turn-around is a “good-to-do”. Missing the 1 hour turn-off trail and hiking 2 more hours all the way back is a “don’t-do” (without planning). And did I mention SUNSCREEN?
