Perfect for Romance!

My Wife and I stayed at the Amara Resort in May 2004. It was a beautiful romantic two night stay. I would highly recommend any couple looking for a special place to stay to go there and experience the mystic beauty of Sedona, AZ. You have to see it for yourself to understand its beauty and the Amara Resort, made the experience even better. The food in the restaurant was some of the best food I have had in any restaurant in the US, and the view from the restaurant of the beautiful Sedona red rocks is breath taking. The bathrooms where spacious, and nicely decorated with a modern flare. Over sized jetted tub, large shower, perfect for two! The sheets on the bed had to have been 1000 count sheets. You melted in them! Bottom line, "We absolutely loved our stay at the Amara Resort in Sedona and are planning to go back on our 10 year anniversary for a much longer stay.”

My wife, children, and I recently came back from a 5 day stay at Amara Creekside Resort in Sedona!! All I can say is that it was Heaven on Earth. The setting is magnificent, the Service - 5STAR, and the food only matched the service levels. It was an all around wonderful stay and I highly recommend anyone to visit!!

I couldn't disagree more with some of the negative reviews posted about the Amara Resort. My wife and I recently stayed at the Amara Resort and our accommodations were great and the staff was wonderful. The rooms are spacious and luxurious and the balcony was perfect!

Loved the Amara Creekside Resort

I was extremely skecptical of my upcoming stay at the Amara Resort after reading some of the reviews posted on this site, however, my stay was nothing less than perfect throughout! I was greeted with such a warm friendly greeting upon arrival, I felt like a long lost friend.
Over beautiful room was located over looking Oak Creek. We came for my husbands 40th birthday, and a weekend away from the kids and life in general.

All the reviews I read made me question the management about the ac/heat noise upon my arrival. They did admit to having some issues, but they fixed the loud noise problem in all the rooms. Our room certainly did not have a noise issue. As for the staff...they were all extremely cordial, friendly and overly accomodating! We felt so excluded from everything. It was so peaceful and quiet at the resort.
The food was fabulous and the service in the restaurant was excellent.
The manager of the restaurant, Shelly, shared with us some the new and exciting things that were going to happen in the upcoming weeks at the Resort; water features (sounds of water), a Zen garden (in the middle of the lobby!) Wow what a statement that will be. But best of all, will be what they are planning for the restaurant. They are going to have Art from local galleries on every table and on some of the walls, you will get an art menu after you order, so you can purchase a piece of art if you want! It sounds like a lot of fun. She said they were planning on very fun table tops items as well. Very unique China, Glass, & silver, to make the table top fun. I cannot wait to come back!
Everything was absolutely wonderful. A much needed break from LIFE.

I highly reccommend the Amara to anyone who wants a retreat away from the high stresses of everyday life!!

A Big Difference!!

What a difference! Great rooms, excellent views and extraordinary service! The restaurant was new, but uncommonly good food - a lot of thought and detail in the menu. I would recommend this place over any in the area. Rooms were different, but very comfortable.

Amara Hotel a more fitting name

We stayed 1/17-19/2004 for my husband's 40th bday. The conceirge is not on-site, but right up the hill. However, when we arrived, our early check-in wasn't ready, our dinner reservation wasn't confirmed and the wine I requested a week ahead of time was not ready either! Instead of the front desk person saying she would remedy the situation, she just shrugged and had me call the concierge. The concierge, however, did remedy everything after I stopped by the office. I would say the rooms are what I expected (sans bath robes and the paper didn't arrive until after 7am), the beds nice and I'm wondering if the hot water issue mentioned in other reviews was due to a different type of shower control that took me a few minutes to figure out. However, the staff needs training. There was no bell boy when we arrived, no bartender until after 5pm and one front desk person even called Scottsdale, "snotsdale"- old joke and not funny anymore. Heather in the restuarant was the best part of the staff. No one ever said they were going to comp the wine for their oversights, but I haven't seen it on the bill yet...We'll see. Next time we'll go with our original plan, L'Auberge.

Not what we had hoped for

We booked our trip through Travelocity and we were disappointed in the size of our room and our 16" "balcony". (Dec. 29-1/2/04) The room was smaller than pictured and we assumed each one had a couch. The bed was wonderful=great sheets and a comforter but the bathroom was awkward with no counter space. We were extremely disappointed with Robert who basically shrugged his shoulders and smirked at us when we asked about our acommendations. Brady was wonderful; changed our room and repeatedly asked if everthing was alright. It was strange having to walk through 3 buildings to get to our room; the lobby is rather stark.
If we go back to Sedona we would stay somewhere else.

Contemporary and Classy

I would rank Amara up with some of the best "Boutique" resort in the United States. It has a very contemporary look and feel with a refined and unpretentious look that is very Vogue! The room accomodations are also very classy with a decor you don' find in the average resort - once again I use the word refined. The resort staff was friendly and very accomodating to my several request for towels, wake up calls etc... I had a pleasurable dining experience as well - I looked forward to my meals at Amara. I will definetely book all future visits in the Sedona area at the Amara Resort! What a spectatular view of the Red Rocks!

t stay here if you need your sleep

We stayed at the Amara Resort between Christmas and New Year's 2003, lured by the internet bed and breakfast special, the refreshingly modern ambiance and the central location. The Amara is nice, but it is obvious it has just opened and it has quite a few bugs to be worked out. On the plus side, the personnel were always helpful and friendly to us, and we enjoyed eating in the restaurant.

The rooms on the other hand are quite disappointing (not as big as pictured in the web site - surprise, surprise). The bathroom has a huge sink with no counter space around it. As if an afterthought, there is a narrow glass shelf next to the sink and a small glass table behind the sink to put toiletries on, but this is awkward at best. My husband summed it up when he observed that he didn't expect to have to put his toiletry bag on top of a toilet at a nice hotel.

And then there is the heating system. It is so incredibly NOISY that we joked that it must be fired by Sedona's latest vortex. It woke us up every night multiple times, even when we resorted to wearing earplugs.
We spoke to other guests and they shared this same experience, so it wasn't just our room. It is a very serious drawback and would prevent me from wanting to visit this hotel again. On the plus side, the mattresses are heavenly. And nice bed linens.

Also beware: There is an extremely steep-sloped driveway entrance to the hotel. When Sedona gets snow and ice, which it does a few times a year, this will be impassable, especially for the little golf cart they use to ferry people up the hill. Better plan your stay for warm weather if you want to get out and about!

As an aside, some of the help told us they were staying on through the Christmas season and are planning on leaving at the first of the year.
We were told that there were plans to change the theme of the restaurant to "The Gallery" and make the wait people dress up in painter's smocks. (Oh, puleez. I'd quit, too.)

Underwhelmed...

We stayed at the Amara 12/29-12/30 while in Sedona to take care of business for our upcoming wedding. We were offered a fantastic military discount ($60 off the price of the room!), so we decided to check it out. Overall, the place does seem to be going for the aforementioned W Hotel / contemporary look and ambience, but I did not feel like I was staying in a resort. The lobby is sparse in decor and ambience, and appears to be lacking something due to the large, empty space - it doesn't have the dramatic look of the other contemporary hotels it appears to be trying to emulate. I was not impressed with the trek through three buildings, inside and outside, that was required to reach our rooms, nor was I impressed by the fact that we passed the ice machine outside (?) on the way to our rooms. The hallways of the resort are reminiscent of office buildings in decor, with their sparse decorations and multicolored walls. The room itself was nice, especially the bathroom, but we were lacking some amenities (drinking glasses, anyone?). The DVD player was a nice touch, and we had a great view of the creek, as well as patio furniture to enjoy it with. My biggest complaint is that the furnace was ridicuolously loud - we had to continually adjust the volume on the TV to hear over it. This made no sense given the newness of the property! Otherwise, we were unable to eat at the restaurant, as it was closed for New Year's festivities, but we did enjoy the $10 coupon to eat lunch at the nearby Canyon Breeze Grill, which was pricey ($26 for 2 cheeseburgers, fries, and sodas) but had great views. My stay at the Amara was mediocre at best - in the future, I'll stick with the Hilton and just drive the 10 minutes into town.

Not what we expected!

We took advantage of a rate "special" to visit one of our favorite resort areas. We found the facility to be stark and throughout lacked a feeling of "warmth." The room's decor was again stark and inexpensively furnished, although the bed was quite comfortable, and the room was clean. We, too, found the hot water in the shower lacking. The furnace was extremely loud and we found it difficult to communicate normally.
There was no lighting in the walkin closet. Would we visit the Amara Resort again? No.

Top Local Tips for Sedona

Pink Jeep Tours Brokwn Arrow tour was fun, good way to see the red rocks up close without hiking in several miles.

Great restaurant in Sedona Try Ken's Creekside restaurant. Amazing food (don't forget to try the seafood) and also amazing desserts (Peach Cobbler is out of this world!). Ken normally comea round to chat at dinner and ask about the food, very fun and easy to talk to. Service is fast and efficient.

Red Rock Jeep Tours They were super. There are a lot of companies who do this, but I can't say enough good things about this one - we had a great time on the Soldiers Pass outing.
