Overpriced, Air Conditioning Broke

We booked this hotel as an in-town summer get-away. The design of the hotel is very contemporary. While the rooms are a little small for the money, the beds are very comfortable. We had a nice massage, lounged by the pool, and enjoyed a nice diner a short walk away in Scottsdale. The pool is a little odd. There were a bunch of people hanging out by the pool that obviously were not staying at the hotel. One guy who was not a guest had even brought his own fast food. That's cool for a public pool but for a nice hotel?

That night the air conditioning started to blow warm air. It's summer in Phoenix where it has been 112 during the day. It wasn't long before the room started to warm up. It took over two hours for the hotel to get someone up to the room, look at the AC, and get us into a new room. The nicest guy we delt with was the maintenance man who apologized and tried to hurry things along. There is not reason this should have taken as long as it did, especially at 10 p.m.. We should have immediately been offered a room change. It's summer in Phoenix, the place isn't full.

The following morning we were not offered a discount for the previous night after I explained what had happened. The girl behind the counter seemed indifferent, which frustrated us further. They also tried to double charge us for our pool side drinks that I had already paid for at the bar. They took the cost of the drinks off the bill and acted like they were doing me a favor when I had already paid for them and it was their mistake. It doesn't matter how cool a place looks if the AC breaks and the service is bad.

Even the reduced summer rate for a standard room was way too much for the accomodations. From the retro stainless steel to the platform bed, overall it was not any more special that staying at an Embassy Suites. The phone in the room didn't even work. So what's the big deal about this place anyway?

We live in the Phoenix area and stayed at the James Hotel for Valentine's Day in 2004. This is an awesome hotel. The furnishings are ultra modern. The J bar and Fiamma restaurant are 5 star. The pool and grounds are gorgeous. The place was newly opened when we stayed. Our in room plasma TV didn't work, despite several technicians attempts to fix it. Our scheduled massages were reschedelued and we didn't get the balcony off our room that was confirmed. However, management comped one of our two nights and was very apologetic, which made up for the kinks that still needed to be worked out.
We can't wait to return.

James Hotel aka OLD Holiday Inn

The property is in a great location for Spring Training and all the night life. The rooms are just okay. The standard room still resembles the Holiday Inn that it once was as the bathrooms are pretty much the same. The suites are a little better as they have been updated. The beds are nice are very comfortable with nice linens. The funiture is cheap and stained in most rooms. As a party venue you can see the wear and tear already. They do have a nice little stereo with a jack for your iPod. It really comes down to price and what time of year you are staying at the hotel. If you get the room for a fair deal during low times then it worth the price. If you need to stay during peak times then I reccomend the Marriott Suites for service and value and it's only a block away. The staff is hit or miss. The first time I stayed everything was terrible as they had just opened, so bad that they comped my stay. I cam back and things were better but not excellent as you would believe to expect from the relaxing gettaway that they claim.

Top Local Tips for Scottsdale

Don't miss the Sugar Bowl When you're in Old Town Scottsdale, don't miss the Sugar Bowl, a 50's ice cream parlor that also has great soups and sandwiches for lunch or snack. It's always busy, but if you're just after ice cream and don't mind sitting on a stool, the counter is first-come-first-served. And it's worth a wait. Try a Top Hat sundae, a malt or a genuine ice cream soda - bittersweet chocolate with vanilla ice cream is my favorite - with a little pitcher of extra soda water. We went four times in six days, and felt bad about missing a day.

The Hyatt Place Scottsdale Impeccable staff. Very friendly and clean hotel.

The Orange Table Absolutely lovely cafe (best Double Short Latte ever!). Fresh food, sometimes slow service.
