Nice hotel...great rate near the Canyon

Been to the Canyon over a dozen times, but just stayed at the Rodeway Red Feather this past Christmas night. For a single traveler, it was a great room to lay my head for the night and wind down after a lot of walking at the Canyon. Only small gripe was the long walk in the interior corridor for 2-3 trips from car...but I was alone and this was a very tiny annoyance... but can be expected anywhere. I was just tired after a LONG but enjoyable day of walking. :) Very friendly staff...clean room and interior areas...and a great rate ($63.00) for the holiday weekend. Only ten minutes from Canyon, so the wake-up call afforded me one last sunrise before heading home. I'm staying again this New Years Day...highly recommended as an affordable and clean night or two stay.

The hotel is well situated for the Grand Canyon, only a couple of miles from the park entrance and in the small town of Tusayan. Only the basics in the area (gas station, McDonalds and the restaurants in the few hotels in the town), so it is not a great place to stay for more than a night or two. Nothing seriously wrong with the hotel, just not much around except the canyon! The only annoying thing was the internet in the lobby was incredibly slow. However this may have had something to do with the power interruptions caused by 5 inches of snow! Overall a decent place for an overnight stay in the Grand Canyon area.

Statyed here for 1 night early October 2004. Checked into our room and had to walk right back out again. Pets are allowed in the Hotel, and we obviously had a cat in there before our stay. It stunk of cat wee. Luckily reception gave us another room which was really clean and smelt fresh. Pizza place across the road was brilliant. Food there lovely and the gift shop sells some good things too. FOr the price it was good and within wasy distance of a view of the rim. Would recommend Red Star Helicopters as they were cheap there. Cheaper than net, so book when you are there!!

Nice place, would stay here again

This was a very pleasant hotel. It was very clean and neat. We stayed in the newer section in Sept. 2004. You shouldn't expect much at breakfast - all you get are doughnuts, yogurt, juice and coffee. However, it seemed unusual to find a place serving any kind of breakfast near a national park for a reasonable rate. The staff were friendly and responsive to questions about things to do and see in the area.

We were allocated a room in the newer part right next to the reception.

First, the good stuff:

The room was really nice, clean and fairly spacious with a good size TV.

One of the staff members was very nice and helpful, the other seemed to be having a bad day.

The pool is really good, although I left my swimming costume in the shower to drain, and forgot to take them with me :-(

The location is great, only a mile from the Grand Canyon entrance.

A large carpark, although it can fill up fast.

The bad stuff:

A little overpriced, although one of the cheaper ones in Tusayan.

The breakfast was appalling. A donut and coffee is not what I call breakfast. The breakfast room is also far too small, and guests were having to stand to eat breakfast.

McDonalds over the road charged $1.78 for one hash brown, then the cafe attached to the hotel overcharged me $10 for the breakfast. Count your change if you use this cafe.

A general word on Tusayan. Lovely place but it's a tourist trap. Take as much as possible of what you will need with you before you arrive, because everywhere in Tusayan charges vastly inflated prices. As an example, a four-pack of 200 speed film is $8.99 in the Safeway at Flagstaff, but $18.99 at the general store in Tusayan. The shop opposite Wendys was selling film very cheap, but a glance at the "develop by" date showed August 2003, over a year ago!

Wendys seemed to be the only place that didn't charge high prices.

Stayed two nights no problems

Stayed two nights, Room okay and clean, stayed in the new part, Price was a little high but considering the area and so close to the Grand Cayon, price was under most of the hotels/motels in that area. Breakfast is just coffee, juice, pastry and yogart. Within walking distance to most resturants and shops, Imax. Appx 10-15 mins from Grand Cayon by car.

Excellent room, excellent location

We were here for one night in July and had no problems, the rooms were clean, the staff pleasant and the location great with the park just a mile away. The room was also good value for money compared to others in this loacation. Would definitely stay again. Only downside is the breakfast is nothing more than a yoghurt and a cake.

ok but overpriced

We stayed here for the night of 19th July 2004. It was near to IMAX cinema and the little shops which was nice. Our room was nice and clean, but for the price, something was missing, and the so-called continental breakfast was too basic and more suited for the sweet-toothed.

The Red Feather was OK. However, I do feel that it was over priced, but I am sure that is due to the proximity to the park. The pool was very small and the breakfast was very limited. If you are looking for some place to rest, it is acceptable. The highlight of our stay was seeing 4 adult elk grazing on the shrubs in the parking lot. Also, you need to try out "We Cook Pizza and Pasta" which is right down the street.

Top Local Tips for Grand Canyon

Grand canyon make sure you take warm clothes if going in the winter months... as weather can change from being warm to very cold over night

Missed many of the crowds I realized when I visited GCNP that early May is an excellent time to visit. The park and the surrounding towns were not overly crowded and the weather was about perfect.

Stay away from the Red Feather Lodge My wife and I traveled the northern part of Arizona with our dog on a car trip. One stop was the Grand Canyon. We found that the Red Feather Lodge allowed pets, and their website looked nice. Upon arrival, I had to sign and initial several documents and post a $50 deposit for our pet. We were told we could not check out without a "Pet Inspection" or we would lose our $50. We were given a ground floor room as requested in the old motel portion. The new portion is what you see in their ads and website. We were in the back of the motel with views of a parking lot, garbage cans and other motels. The room was awful. Cramped, with no hair dryer or coffee maker. To get a hair dryer you have to go to the front desk and sign yet another form to get a 2 hour loaner hair dryer. When sitting on the toilet you are 1 inch from the wall and have to be a contortionist to get the toilet paper. Whoever owns this motel is paranoid and anal retentive. I've stayed in 5 star hotels with our dog and never had to initial or sign 5 times to allow our dog to stay with us, nor have I EVER had to wait for someone to inspect our room before checkout. DO NOT STAY HERE. You have been warned.
