Historical Traveller Reviews of Best Western Grand Canyon Squire Inn Hotel
Great place for families visiting the GC.
Given past reviews, we stayed in higher spec rooms in main buliding. Room was very nice.
Pool area is nice, bowling alley good, big games room and lively bar area. Beware of the food from the bar downstairs - it comes in boxes with plastic cutlery. This is fine if you are taking out, but poor if you intend eating in the Bar.
Hotel does a package with Papillon Helicopters to include a flight over Canyon.
Our only complaint about GC is queues of vehicles re-entering Park. They have a "re-entry" lane which is supposed to allow fast entry to those already holding a National Park or 7 Day Pass, but at busy periods there can be a long wait before the appropriate lane can be accessed. The Parks Authority should sort this problem.
Also, I know Americans pride themselves on being friendly, but do the Park Staff really have to talk at great length to every driver entering the Park to ensure they are havin' a nice day? The lines just get longer and you may just miss the sunset!
Enjoyed the BW

Of course, the Grand Canyon was Awesome! After seeing this, I can't imagine anyone Not believing in God!! But we stayed at the BW Squire Inn. The lobby and ambience is nothing like a BW I have seen in the past. Much more upscale. We had an extra large room, (there was 5 of us), which was much more comfortable. However, the service level is not as it should be. I get the feeling, even from being inside the Park, these people know that they are never going to see you again, so there is very little effort put forth. I also got the impression, from the front desk clerk, that he was bored to tears of giving the same info out to everyone! He couldn't of talked faster if he wanted too!!! We only had dinner there once at the buffet. It was the usual buffet quality of food, but a little over priced, as is everything is at the park. They have a free continental breakfast, which was very convenient. They have alot of fresh fruit, danish, muffins, cold cereal and assorted breads. The room was cleaned everyday, at a timely manner. We had lunch one day at El Tovar. The view is not as advertised, and am so glad that we did not stay there. We didn't see a room, but the lobby and restaurant are sooooooo dark and dingy!!!! The food was very average, and I had ordered a hamburger and had asked that it come plain, (they advertised that it was served, rubbed with pepper). The hamburger came covered in pepper, the waitress obviously new this, and asked me if I wanted it exchanged. I said yes, that I could not eat it covered in pepper. Why she brought it to me in the first place, when she knew I had asked for it plain, I thought was annoying. She returned in a matter of, maybe 2 minutes. With a burger that looked plain, but after biting into it I could taste that it was consumed in pepper, we questioned the waitress, she said that she stood there as the person cooking it handed a new one to her. So I ate very little of it. It might not have been so annoying if she hadn't just did the same thing to my daughter. There were two soups, my daughter chose one, when it came, it was not as the waitress had originally described, she said that she was sorry, and did I still want it. Why was it brought to her in the first place,. Needless to say, they just don't want to be bothered. We had dinner in the Bright Angel Lodge. The food was delicious, and the service was fine, but again, the attitude. He was doing us a big favor!! If you can get over the service, which everyone will because that is not why you go there, you will leave with wonderful memories.
Great Trip and Hotel

Our first trip to the Grand Canyon. Stayed at GC Best Western. About 1-2 miles from Park Entrance. There over Memorial Day. If get into park before 10am, no line, if atter noon, the line was all the way to our hotel entrance. Temp was in the 70's day, 40's night so swimming was chilly. Did have a small exercise room, sauna, whirlpool. Pool outdoor and heated (only fits 20 but not many in due to cool temps). DId use free tennis court by pool. Game room has pool tables, foosball, air hockey and video games. Sports bar (no smoking, YES!!) had good food. Free cont. breakfast each AM with good asssortment of cold foods. Good service from maid/desk staff. we had deluxe room on main floor and got a rollaway bed (not just a cot!). Large tub, 2 large sink/vanitys. Hotel cliean, staff friendly. Didn't go to the restaurants (a bit pricy and we rather had sandwiches that we got from the Market Plaza in the park on our way out each day). We bought a cooler instead of getting the daily refrig charge. Asked for a 4th day on arrival and they had one (where the online info said all rooms booked). Beautiful setting, quiet even though next to the Grand Canyon airport where all the tour helicopters/planes take off. Go see the IMAX Grand Canyon just down the road, very good views for those who don't go DOWN into the canyon. The Canyon experience was great even though it was a VERY busy time according to their staff. nothing crazy like Disneyworld on the 4th of July or Washington DC on the 4th of July.
No video games or pay per view movies, but do have a few channels to watch (very hard on teenage TV junkies!)
BW Canyon Squire is as best a location as you'll get in the area without staying in the park. Hotel was fine, better to stay in the main building. Our room in an outer building was adequate but nothing to rave about, but fair for the price. Would absolutely treat myself to the El Tovar next time.

The room was very spacious, and the bathroom was palatial. The hotel is not in the National Park, as my husband thought. It is down the road in a motel row area. However, the drive is short to the park. There is a bowling alley for the kids, but the arcade/alley/sports bar is rather bare bones. I would stay there again.
Best of the Worst
Been up to the Big Ditch quite a few times now, this hotel has great big clean modern airy rooms at a reasonable price for the area. The restaurant is slow, food poor, and expensive for what it is, but that applies to nearly the whole area, particularly Tusayan.
Great Stay! Large rooms with huge tubs.

We had a very enjoyable stay at this hotel. We were impressed with the size of the room (much larger than the room in the Hyatt we stayed at in Phoenix!) The bathroom had a large, marble bathtub that for us, made it all worthwhile. I had done a lot of research on the Grand Canyon area and expected it to be rustic, so I didn't come expecting a resort.
The continental breakfast was average (but most are). The only complaint we had was that the pool was small and full of bugs! We made use of the concierge and found him to be very helpful, informative and patient. I didn't feel like the drive to the park was long at all.
Besides, there are several shops, restaurants, and the IMAX nearby. I definitely would recomend this hotel to anyone visiting the Grand Canyon area.
the nicest staff

The staff at this hotel were outstanding. Maybe because it was off season, I felt very attended to. The breakfast staff was perfect. I had my doubts about going to the Grand Canyon in the winter. I now can not think of a better time to go. It was unbelievably beautiful. Snow patches in the south rim and when we went in the helicopter and over the north rim it was beyond words. Being so slow we felt like the park was all ours.
We had an excellent stay
I read all the reviews here before I booked a hotel for our Grand Canyon trip which we just had. What I understood that there are two types of room : standard and deluxe. My anticipation was that all the complaints were against standard room. So I called the 1-800 number for this room and booked a deluxe room. I chatted with the receptionist for a while and figured out that the standard room is not a good one. It's in the adjacent building without an elevator. So I did not want to spoil my vacation and went for the deluxe one. It was an excellent choice. The room was very neat and large. The bathroom was clean too and had a huge marble bathtub. It was a good bargain for $94 (including tax) off-season rate. The hotel lobby itself was beaufiful and the staffs were helpful, courteous and professional. Also the continental breakfast was a good one too. We had everything excellent. I am just so impressed with this hotel that if I go there again I am going to stay again in this hotel.
Nothing special, but certainly not bad
We would have preferred to stay at El Tovar or Bright Angel inside the canyon, but since they were booked we ended up here. We booked on their internet site and got a good rate, and had coupons for the continental breakfast buffet each morning (mini-bagels, fruits, toast, soda/juices/coffee, a few other pastries), no problems in getting our rate or the breakfast (just make sure you take the coupons with you).
The hotel was clean and quiet, though a 15-20 minute drive from the Grand Canyon, so it took longer then I had thought to "commute" everyday. We had rooms in the 2000 building, which meant a 5 minute walk from the lobby out the doors in the back and then across a small lot to a separate building. If I had to stay in Tusayan again rather then in the park I would return here, but request to be in the main building.
Top Local Tips for Grand Canyon
Stay here best value at the best western grand canyon
stay and eat here too best dinning for dinner, bowling alley too clean rooms great shop in the hotel frist class
All of South Rim, except Hermits Rest loop, are accessible by car and very easy to see in early am before the RV's arrive to plug up the roads. (If you are an RV'er and reading this, please drive faster!!!!!!!)
Eating out: tough choice
We found that food is kinda expensive in this area, compared to the other destinations we went to.We had a look at all restaurant menues but found all of them overpriced so we grabbed a bite at McD's.
