Horrible Staff, Rude, and hostile

from NilesLA
This hotel has a ton of potential, but the staff there has to be the worst on the planet. When we arrived we were greated with a very grumpy front desk attendant who misplaced all of our credit card information and would not look to see if they had accidentally put it under the group name (we had a total of 18 rooms booked there) instead of my personal name. The Jane Russell room had mold all over the floors and so it made it stink inside the room, which after many complaints was unattended to. The last night of our stay a stranger from the bar crept up to our room and started knocking on our door at 3AM... I was terrified... all the phone lines were down so I was unable to contact the front desk or 911. And when I confronted the manager about strangers who were not staying at the hotel all she said was that she was unable to do anything about that. What she could have done was call the police and filed trespassing charges against this person since they were not a guest at the hotel. This hotel is in need of new management and new staff that know what they are doing.

This was the worst stay in a hotel I have ever experienced. One of the managers even started yelling at me when I asked about the credit card problem later in the week.

Posted is a photograph of the mold in the Jane Russell room by the shower. It was absolutely disgusting... and mold is hazardous to your health.

Quiet and Full of Character

from KurtAZ
My father and I needed a room for two nights to explore Flagstaff and it was perfect. I asked for a quiet room with two beds, they gave us a suite connected by the bathroom. With separate tvs and doors, it was very comfortable. Interior rooms at the 'Vista are key for restful sleep, given the trains and street traffic. Make sure you request what you want in a room so they can provide that for you.

The mattresses were extremely comfortable in our room (Jack Daniels room, as they are named individually). Even better than at home! A couple down the hall had a slight leakage problem, but the hotel staff took care of them very well I thought.

So, an older hotel downtown with lots of character and reasonable price. I can forgive quite a lot for those things alone, but I found very little to forgive on my excellent stay. Thanks!

loved the Monte V

from Fontroy
I read a couple reviews of this hotel that were somewhat negative and I can't figure out why. Its a great historical hotel in a wonderful location in downtown within short walking distance of a ton of shops, restaraunts and bars, and it has a nice saloon and a Thai restaraunt on the first floor. We had the Zane Grey Suite, a corner room with windows on two sides. It was very clean, richly appointed, had a nice pillow top queen bed, and a 19-inch tv with tons of cable channels. Often old hotels have shaky plumbing, but not the Monte V; the bathroom was a little small but really nice, and the shower worked great. Its not a resort, but I have stayed at a lot of hotels in Flagstaff, several that are more expensive, and this is by far my favorite, and its a real bargain.

monte vista is great!

from sessa1959
i have read enough bad reviews of the hotel monte vista! people need to do their research before they travel and find a place that suits them. if you're looking for a snooty boutique hotel you would find in a large city or a routinely boring chain...monte vista is not for you! if you enjoy an ecclectic, homey, uniquely historic hotel with a great thai restaurant, fun, hip, lounge with generous and friendly barstaff and patrons and an adjacent aveda salon/day spa all nestled in historic downtown flagstaff monte vista is the best stay/value to be found! staff was attentive, couteous, and helpful with any request. room was clean, well appointed and stocked with aveda ammenities. i stayed here in '98 and this was not the case, but decided to return anyway and it was one of the best stays in a 11 day southwest vacation.

Awful place

There are numerous hotels/motels in the Flagstaff area - Monte Vista has to be at or near the very bottom......Housekeeping is terrible in the common areas and the rooms.....I actually saw the owner of this place, a 'person' named Craven, arguing loudly with a guest in the yourself a favor--look elsewere

Unique and Funky

We drove by all the chain motels on our way into Flagstaff from the airport and I'm glad we booked into the Monte Vista. It has character and history and is located right in the middle of the historic area of Flagstaff. However, if Holiday Inn is your idea of great place to stay you probably won't love the Monte Vista.

The desk clerk was very helpful (the airline has lost one of our bags and he promised to let us know as soon as it was delivered) and the room was great Comfortable beds, small bathroom with Aveda products. There's a good Thai restaurant in the hotel and a great expresso bar called "Late for the Train" right across the street.

Charming hotel lacking common hotel courtesy

My girlfriend and I are huge fans of staying in historic hotels and the Monte Vista is as unique and interesting as any of them. My sister and her husband stayed there the same weekend and we all enjoyed the hotel but had problems with the staff. The bartender refused to serve alcohol to my 27-yr-old sister because he didn't believe the WEIGHT claimed on her driver's license was accurate! Embarrassed and insulted, she spent the evening in a less hostile local bar.

My girlfriend and I drove to the bank in the morning and returned to the hotel. An empolyee saw us leave the parking lot on foot to check out Flagstaff and apparently thought we were parking there illegally. We returned a couple hours later to find a large concrete block chained to the tire of my car though my HOTEL GUEST ID was clearly visible in the windshield.

I did not leave feeling that the people of the Monte Vista cared for my business or are interested in having me back.

Had a great time in Flagstaff, though!

t stay there again

I had driven by this hotel many times and it looked interesting. I like hotels with character. I made a reservation by phone the night before our stay and received a confirmation number. At the checkin desk the next afternoon I provided the confirmation number to the clerk and he still could not find my reservation. No apologies were given but he did manage to get us into the same room that we had reserved but I had to barter with him to get the same price that I was quoted over the phone the day before. The bedspread on one of the beds had numerous stains, the air throughout the whole hotel smelled of cigarette smoke, the water was barely hot enough to be called a hot shower and the heat was just barely adequate. The general impression I got from this place was that it was a grand hotel at one time but the current management is letting it go downhill. I would not recomment this place.

No-tell Motel

I have been a resident in Flagstaff for 8 years. I was reading the reviews of the Hotel Monte Vista and it is so good to see that other people have enough common sense to know when they are getting a bad deal.. Most everyone who has stayed in this hotel gives it rave reviews, but truthfully, unless you know anything about its history or any of its secrets then it is nothing more than a waste of time and money that couldl've been sepnt better somewhere else. The hauntings I can say ARE true, but is it really worth staying in a building that is known for never being kept up to date with fire saftey laws, and itself has become a complete fire hazard and deathtrap to any of its visitors? There are many other shady things to be told about the Hotel Monte Vista, but if you simply prefer to sleep peacefully in the night without a fear of being trapped inside a smoke filled room, then please choose another place to stay.

History and Comfort

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Monte Vista is a genuine experience. It is an older place with real atmosphere. Comfortable yet reasonable. The style is distinctive and like no other place in Flagstaff or the surrounding area. Don't listen to the whiners who think it isn't up to Holiday Inn Standards, they deserve to stay in cookie cutter rooms where you could be in Jakarta or Phoenix and not know the difference.

Top Local Tips for Flagstaff

Culture, Dining, Scenery Lots to see and do - Ourdoors, nationl monuments and parks. Astrology observatory and concerts.

Great massage at a great price! Stephani Lindsey is a licensed massage therapist and Yoga Instructor who will give you a 75 minute workover for $65.00. If you're from the east coast like myself, that is a bargain. I highly recommend her services, which are less than four blocks from the hotel and conveniently located on the southside of the tracks. 928.310.2772

Monte Vista 2 great bars located in the hotel
