Family things to do in Flagstaff We found a full day long enought to explore Flagstaff and nearby attractions. The downtown area is good for a morning stroll around the shops and lunch. Walnut Canyon is an excellent side trip for a couple of hours and even if you can't get up and down the 240 steps to view the cliff dwellings you can take the rim path walk. Lowell Observatory is a great visit for those interested in astronomy and remember to check if they are holding public viewings on the evenings you are there. Note that the horse trek business mentioned in some guide books has closed down and there is no mini-golf course in town either.

"Sky Ride" chairlift up Mt. Humphreys at the Arizona Snow Bowl. Even during the summer, the Arizona Snow Bowl, an easy drive from Flagstaff, is spectacular. The "Sky Ride" chairlift is a slow (about 30 minutes) but spectacular ride up to a view point and foot trails at 11,500 feet. Rangers give short but very interesting talks. On a clear day, six volcanoes and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (65 miles away) can be seen. The forest of aspen, spruce, and even bristlecone pine is beautiful. (I would not recommend the chairlift for small children due to its length, although some people were taking them.) A cafe and gift shop are located at the base of the lift, and there is also a "Frisbee golf" course that all ages from 4 or 5 up can enjoy. Dogs are allowed off-leash in the meadows near the chairlift.
