Great Value

from ekehat
We just spent two nights at the Pony Soldier Inn.
The rooms are vry nice and clean, though not very big; There's free WiFi in the rooms; Free breakfast is OK; Location is good.
We paid about $70 per night, which seems to me as a very good value.
There's a good chance we'll stay here again if we're in the Flagstaff area.

tired the next day)

The facility is a bit run down and it's very close to the rail tracks. The trains seem to run all night, and their horns woke me up several times. My room was small. The continental breakfast is a disappointing mix of cold cereal, instant oatmeal, halved bananas and bad muffins.

And this really annoyed me: the iron was tethered to the board by a stiff cable, rendering it nearly impossible to use. A small thing, perhaps, but indicative of the overall quality and character of this motel.

The desk staff was very courteous, though.

This motel is unworthy of the BW brand.

Sleep beside the Mother Road

This is the only place I stay when visiting Flagstaff. An older facility on the legendary Route 66 but very well maintained. Small bathrooms. Helpful staff. You will hear the trains. But somehow this light sleeper doesn’t have any trouble. Maybe it’s the mountain air?

Outstanding Price for Extreme Comfort

from traveller0074
I stayed at this hotel after a drive across country from NY in the summer of 2001. Arrived late at night and the very kind and helpful staff at the front desk gave me the last room they had available, a guestroom with a queen bed. The room was small compared to other best westerns that I've stayed in, but the quality was great and it felt very safe and secure. The room was very clean and the bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in. After staying at luxury hotels, finding this kind of quality at a Best Western was a welcomed surprise! I have read reviews about train noise and I have heard it at other hotels along route 66 but it never bothered me at this one. I have stayed at a few other hotels along 66 and for the price and quality, this one is the best! I didn't use the pool or the complimentary breakfast so I can't comment on them.

This is a great hotel if you like hair on your bed linens and stagnent smelling air coming from the room fans. The windows could not be open because it is near an Amtrak train station where trains come every 20 to 30 minutes and there is no break from their horns. I checked in and checked out 20 minutes later. Best Western does NOT guarantee you'll be satisfied with their accomodations so your money is NOT refunded when you find a hair in your bed. The restaurant smelled like year old Crisco and the pool is small. Its an old hotel. When I returned home from my trip I received a rather rude letter from the manager stating that she could not grant my refund request on my 20 minute stay because the manager said she could not confirm my complaints of hair or smoky smell coming from the fans. I don't understand how she would know anything. She wasn't there when I checked in or out and wasn't in until after 10 the next morning. The well-trained front desk worker was very superficial in handling the complaint with a "oh, I'm sorry about that, but we still have to charge you for your stay tonight because our hotel is booked solid tonight. " In the meantime the other desk worker was asking a walk in that there were rooms available and said he could upgrade to a suite. Save your time and money and don't ruin your vacation. Book your hotel somewhere else.

Loved the Pony Soldier

We Stayed there for 8 nights and had a great time. The staff and rooms are great. With in walking distance to good resterants and little shops. We will stay there again, hands down.

Not the Greatest, not the Worst

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for three nights in Nov. 2000. The room was very small.
I had to slither in to get by the bed because it was so close to the bathroom. The door to our room was directly facing the bed, also, a weird setup, because when you opened the door there was the hallway and anyone could see everything in our room including the unmade bed. The "enclosed" pool was exactly that: across the parking lot, not attached to the hotel. Pool was warm but it was cold outside so the condensation just ran off the walls, dripped on me as I sat in the chair waiting for my kids to get out. Very unpleasant, that pool area. There was nowhere to walk to get food, but I hadn't expected it to be within walking distance to anything. Still - just not a very nice stay. I would have left if my husband hadn't said it wasn't worth the trouble to pick up all our stuff and go.

living in the past

June 18-20 -- would have moved but could not find rooms at better motels. Trans were across Hwy 66, but not a problem for us. 50s style small rooms with surprises like very low air circulation in the rooms, noisy vent fans. Breakfast included watered down orange juice and weak, weak coffee. Staff was polite and friendly.

This motel was probably a hit in its hey-day !

Stay away!!!

Stayed at the Best Western Pony Soldier in May, 2003. Terrible accomodations, unhelpful and uninformed staff. Pool was dinky and very uninviting. Trains ran every 30 minutes through the night. Pulled out a day early and the front desk couldn't give us a credit for the unused night until the management returned after having the weekend off. Wouldn't stay here again if you paid me.

This motel is not only run down with small rooms, but it is located directly across from some serious railroad tracks. Trains ran approximately every 30 minutes well into the night. There is no elevator, so rooms on the ground floor are gone early. Generally speaking, anything located on RTE 66 in Flagstaff is going to be in close proximity to the train tracks. Historic downtown Flagstaff is WONDERFUL for dining. We ate at a natural foods restraurant ( which I normally avoid) directly across from the plaza, and the food and staff were excellent.

Top Local Tips for Flagstaff

Grand Canyon It was very close to Grand Canyon, and was on the old Rt 66, so that part was fun, but was the worst hotel I've ever been in.

Avoid some Best Western Motels Don't go by the brand name Best Western for your motel. Ask to see room(s) first before paying.

There is another Best Western in Flagstaff This hotel ruined our expectation or desire to explore Flagstaff. There is another Best Western there and perhaps (I don't know for sure) it would be a better choice.
