Historical Traveller Reviews of Silverbow Inn Hotel

Charming, friendly, great food

from CrawfordGene
The Silverbow Inn is located in downtown Juneau in the historic district, convenient to everything. A bakery founded at the beginning of ther 20th century has been converted to an inn, bakery, restaurant and even a small movie theater. The room was small, but very well kept and decorated well and with some humor.

A full breakfast was included with the room, and although the selections were limited the food was good and of good quality. They make excellent, New York type, bagels there. The owners originally come from NYC and there is an urbane atmosphere. Unfortunately we weren't there when they had the free movies, but the schedule was certainly nothing Hollywood. Jill, the proprietor, was well informed and helped us make a reservation for a rewarding boat tour to Tracy Arm. We had box lunchs prepared in the restaurant for the boat tour and ferry (much better food that way than available on the boat and ferry).

Travelors seeking a new standard motel or hotel may not like it at the Silverbow. Those seeking a unique experience, friendly personal atmosphere, and good healthy food will enjoy the Silverbow.

Loved the Silverbow

from writersbloq
We couldn't have asked for a better inn than the Silverbow in Juneau. Jill, the owner, was incredibly warm and helpful and friendly and the rest of the staff was just as great. Perfect location (just a bit away from the packs of cruise tourists), cozy rooms, and delicious baked goods, breads, and bagels available throughout the day. And the price was just right. Who could ask for anything more??

Terrific Downtown Location

from A TripAdvisor Member
We've just spent four nights at the Silverbow where we had a great time. The location is terrific, only a few minutes walk from all of the downtown attractions, restaurants and museums. With the bakery and cinema next door, you're rubbing shoulders with regular Juneau residents and definitely feeling like you're getting more of the feeling of the city than you usually do as a tourist. As the other reviewers have commented, breakfast is filling and delicious ... there's always a frittata, great baked goods, fruit, granola, good coffee and juices. And the baked goods are there all day. You can step right next door and order lunch - try the Sengalese peanut soup! You can order a packed lunch to go if you plan to be out during the day. Our room (Room 1 with 1 queen bed and twin bed) was not the typical type of hotel room, it was smallish and funky but comfortable and contained all the necessary amenities. Be aware that, if you travel with a lot of large luggage, you might find the rooms (Room 1 at least) to be too small. The bathroom was good-sized and well-appointed. Some of the staff are exceptionally friendly while others are more reserved but all are professional and helpful. When we left, we had no doubt that we had gotten a good value. We'd stay there another time without hesitation.

Friendly place with great breakfast

from pandasfl
The best thing about this B&B was the breakfast (frittata, bagels, bread, muffins, etc) that came with the room. The baked goods come from the bakery next door and was out in the lobby all day for you to snack on. The staff and hostess were very friendly and helpful. The room was small, but clean. The location was at one end of downtown, but somehow there was some noise from the street or parking lot at night. If you decide not to stay here, definitely visit the bakery.

Found a great little inn!

from A TripAdvisor Member
This small, beautifully decorated inn turned out to be a real find. The rooms have a personalized touch; the staff is very accommodating and extremely personable. You don't feel like guests, but like extended family. The inn is attached to a bagel store/bakery/snack spot, which is very delicous and convenient. I would recommend this inn to anyone visiting Juneau who is looking for something different from commercial hotels!

Friendly Homey Inn

If you are looking for a down to earth charming Inn, Silverbow is your place to stay. Jill the Proprietor couldn't do enough to make our stay more pleasant. She was busy with her infant son but made sure we had everything we needed.
This is a restored building that Jill and her husband have worked very hard to preserve its integrity and Alaskan feel. Its downtown location is perfect for getting around and I finally conquered walking up to the Robert Mountain on our last day.
The restaurant/bagel store put at least 10 pounds on me. Better bagels and cookies you can't get anywhere else. So many varieties I had to taste them all.
The damp weather made the Thai soup a great snack i enjoyed every afternoon.
Don't miss the Silverbow Inn!!!

place

from jjo
This is not a slick, business-class hotel. It is, however, a wonderful, warm and friendly place. The rooms are comfortable and individually decorated. The staff is friendly and happy to help. The breakfast is outstanding. You get fresh bagels from the bakery, homemade granola, homemade make your own waffles and much more. Then, they put out sweets from the bakery all day long and you can snack anytime. They also have a good collection of guidebooks and information you can read when eating in the breakfast area. Yeah, the hot water went out briefly one morning, but the ambience and food more than make up for this. It's also a very good central location.

Not professional and business like owner

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had an e-mail from SIlver bow stating four people and the owner refused to listen and insisited that her staff had made notes that they we had made reservation for only 2 people, even after showing her the print out of the e-mai. They gave us a room10 feet by 10 feet room for two adukts and two children. It was too late at night to go and look for anoither place. The rooms were not clean. Staff is courteous but is trained to keep the place clean.

Warm bread, friendly staff, great location

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for 4 nights in September 2003. Our bathroom had a problem removing the humidity (I admit to taking long hot showers). Our double + single bedded room overlooking the street was ample for our needs (hey, we didn't expect the Ritz). Outside the door was a notepad where you could leave comments, and when my sisterinlaw noted that she had lost a bedsock, it was returned with the next sheet change.

Entering the Inn one is in the great hall that contains the front desk and, behind it, the breakfast area where pastries are available all day long. Breakfast consists of fresh-baked items, plus juice, yogurt, home-made granola, and coffee -- dive into the help-yourself fridge and see what's available!

In the afternoons, we came home to a couple of half-empty bottles of wine left on the table as an invitation to relax...

The staff was interested and interesting and couldn't have been more helpful - full of tips on what to do and where to go. The proprietors are involved in all that is happening in Juneau - just ask for advice!

Juneau is well worth a visit, not just a stopover on a cruise - and the people of Juneau, when they know you're staying to see the city, will more than reward you with kindness.

great location, fabulous bakery cafe, nice staff

from garymiller
we stayed May 13-15th, 2004. had rm # 1, 2 beds, tv, private bath, older decor, but pleasant, downstairs is the Silverbow Cafe/bakery, you order what you want, all inclusive in price of room, great breakfast, got a sandwich to take along with us. staff is nice. location is perfect to walk to all of downtown juneau, we had a rental car, parking was easy. we liked the Silverbow.

Top Local Tips for Juneau

So much to do I most highly recommend zip-lining with Alaska Zipline Adventures (www.alaskazip.com). It is extremely safe (they have a ton of safety measures), incredibly fun and exciting and something that is done in only a few, select places. Rachel and Matt, who own Alaska Zipline Adventures are very personable and knowledgeable. You can even bring your kids!

Things to do around Juneau If you have good weather, the hike starting at the top of the Mt. Roberts Tram and climbing up for 2-3 miles (we were eventually stopped by the snow), is quite spectacular: incredible views of the channel, wildflowers, eagles and snow capped peaks in all directions. If you are considering the rather expensive excursion to Pack Creek, make sure that you find out whether the salmon are running before you go (nobody volunteered this important piece of information to us). The salmon were not running when went (first week in July) and we were lucky to see 1 bear. Some travelers a few days before us saw none.

Juneau is a typical tourist stop See Mendenhall Glacier and Mt. Roberts. If you are a shopper for tourist items, this is your place. About a million tourists come through Juneau annually because it is a cruiseship stop.
