Top Local Tips for Fairbanks
about fairbanks There isn't a lot to do in Fairbanks itself. You can walk the downtown shops in half a day. Anything else you would have to take a taxi to. We did the riverboat ride just to kill time. It was more fun than I thought it would be but it was a big crowd (1000 people maybe) and pretty touristy. We just landed there on our way to Denali.
Hit the Thai House There is a Thai Restaurant down the street between 4th and 5th. The Yellow pages say it's on 4th- it's actually on 5th but it's worth finding because it is absolutely awesome Thai. One thing I'll give Fairbanks is it has excellent, excellent dining options. If Thai isn't your thing, try The Pumphouse (you MUST try the Seafood Chowder, best in the world!), The Turtle Club (rock salt cooked Prime Rib nightly, YUM) and Pikes Landing has an excellent selection of steak and seafood, plus a truly superb wine and beer selection. If you make it down to Denali National Park area, I highly recommend The Perch Restaurant about 15 miles south of Denali. You won't believe it unless you see it...5 star dining in the middle of nowhere. You'll love it.
Dine at Lavelle's We had dinner in Fairbanks at Lavelle's (sp?) which is in the ground floor of the hotel. It is elegant.
