Fairbanks is great! The people in Fairbanks are lovely, warm, friendly folks. Stop and chat with them. They are quite interesting and refreshing. Take the Stern Wheel Ferry Discovery for a tour. It is a great trip and well worth the money. See Rick Gold at Chena Marina for a fishing trip in his Beaver or 185. Or, as I did, just go for a ride and see the Bush from 500 feet.

Alaska's expensive - use the free continental breakfast Everything is expensive in Alaska, especially dining out. Find a hotel with a good variety in their continental breakfast (like Pike's in Fairbanks) and eat there to keep travel costs down a bit.

Riverboat Discovery This is a great way to a taste of life in Fairbanks in a 1/2 day trip. Very enjoyable.
