Top Local Tips for Veracruz

A special dining treat If you want to try a very good restaurant that is off the beaten tourist track (i.e., not on the zocalo or the malencon), try Los Pelicanos, which is a few blocks west of the zocalo, on Lerdo. (Check location with hotel first -- 90% sure this is right.) We had morrado al ajillo that was spectacular. You'll be glad if you go to this place.

Danzon In the evening on the main plaza of Veracrus (the Zocalo) you will find a demonstration of the danzon--the historic Cuban dance from which came the chacha and mambo. This dance spread to the Veracruz area by Cuban immiigrants, and this is now possibly the world center of this dance form. Watch the people as they wait for the right moment to start dancing (a complex algorythm based on the unique pattern of the music). The dance is deceptively slow and simple, but really quite complex and beautiful to watch.
