We stayed in Hotel Tonala two nights in March, 2006. The hotel was recommended by friends and we made our reservation via e-mail. We paid around $400.00 pesos per night for two adults and our 12 year old grandson. No deposit was required, but we were required to give a time of arrival and to confirm our reservation within 24 hours of arriving.

We arrived by bus and took a taxi to the hotel. At first, the taxi driver thought we were asking for any hotel in Tonala and took us to another location. Eventually he understood, asked for directions, and delivered us to the hotel.

Our reservation was recorded and was at the front desk when we arrived. The hotel clerk spoke very little English, but we got by with her English and our equally limited Spanish.

The hotel is small and has an inner courtyard in the back. We were on the second floor overlooking the couryard. The room was a small, typical older Mexican hotel room except that they had a 2" sponge on top of the mattresses. It made the bed much more comfortable than most beds in Mexican hotels. The bathroom was clean and had a shower with lots of pressure and hot water.

We ate twice at the restaurant that ajoins the hotel. The food was good and the prices reasonable, but neither were "great".

We took a taxi to the main square in downtown Guadalajara and spent the afternoon sight-seeing, and then took the city bus back to Tonala. Again, the bus driver's limited English and our limited Spanish served us well enough.

Hotel Tonala is half a block from the Tonala Square. On Saturday evening the square had a bit of a feel of Spain. There were families, and couples dressed in smart-casual slothing out strolling. There were the typical food venders, and there was a small symphony orchestra playing in the band stand.

On Sunday morning, we woke to the sound of church bells. When we walked out the front door of the Hotel, we had to squeeze by the market vendors who had set up in the early morning. The Tonala market is amazing and Hotel Tonala is in the centre of the action.

On Monday, we had breakfast in a little eatery in the Square, watched the raising of the Mexican Flag, and then shopped in the artisan shops in the area before leaving.

We recommend the Hotel Tonala.
