Top Local Tips for Taxco

walking and pizza Taxco is undeniaibly pretty with its whitewashed houses and red tile roofs. The ubiquitous VW beetle taxi vans putting around the narrow streets was the only turn-off. Their noise and fumes got under our skin and up our noses after three days and it was definitely time to move on.Our most memorable day was when we decided to walk up to the Cristo at the top of the hillside overlooking the town. We scaled the steep, narrow streets until our legs ached and it got dark and we couldn't see where we were going and we still didn't ge there. Coming down was even more scary as I had no tread left on my shoes and the stone roads were very slippery. Never been so glad to get back to a hotel in my life. There is a little pizzeria on a rooftop overlooking the main square that serves declicious food.

Access to the Zocalo, or town center If you arrive in Taxco by bus, as we did, you will want to take a taxi to the Zocalo, or town centre, if you plan on staying in one of the many hotels located there. Unless you're backpacking, you won't enjoy lugging your bags up the steep, winding streets and stairs of the town otherwise. The white VW 'Bug' taxis are cheap and plentiful - just make sure you agree on a price before you get in. You can also hail a 'combi', or mini bus with 'Zocalo' written on the front windsheild - these are even cheaper, at 3.5 pesos per person, which you hand to the driver after squeezing in to the usually-crowded back seats.

Arriving by car You will find many people offering maps as you drive down the main street entering Taxco. Accept a map, ask for directions to your hotel, and provide the person a small tip for services rendered. It was very helpful.
