Top Local Tips for San Miguel de Allende
Don't miss the artisans market (Mercado de Artesanias) It's tucked away behind and below a real market, but it is a real find. All the crafts that are available in the shops, but at better prices - it's Mexico, so negotaite a little. It is also worth the walk through the regular market to get there, as you have a chance to see how real people shop.
Nature's alive in and around San Miguel In a place so well known for historical sights, culture and shopping, it was a pleasant surprise to know there were so many places to go birding! Check out the local paper when you arrive and see -- the local Audubon Society takes birding excursions on weekends, and there's an incredible biosphere reserve not far away called Sierra Gorda -- well worth checking out!
Tuesday Market versus Mercado Artisanias If you only have one day to shop, I would recommend the Mercado Artisanias over the Tuesday Market in a heartbeat. The Mercado is right in town and offers stall upon stall (as well as actual shops) of beautiful local crafts including rugs, jewelry, ceramics and tourist tchotskis (such as t-shirts) at incredible prices. I got several gorgeous beaded bracelets for a steal. The Tuesday Market, on the other hand, is like a gigantic swap meet filled with cheap wares: raw meat and fish, cheap plastics and toys. It took about 40 minutes to get there by cab, and after two hours, I was hard-pressed to find anything that appealed to me. Spend your shopping hours at the Mercado Artisanias and you will not be disappointed!
