Great Place for Relaxation and Quiet

I have stayed at several different resorts in Cancun and Playa del Carmen...the atmosphere at the Riu is more on the quiet side...a little more "mature" clientele...not that there is not rowdy fun to be found...the lobby bar was hopping at night! The beach area was not as crazy as it can get in Cancun...it was a SMALLER beach area, but very nice just the same. We found the food to be quite adequate...grounds and pools were clean and staff very friendly and helpful. I guess I would say if you have teenagers, then I would stay in Cancun where there is probably more going on that they are interested in, but if you and your significant other want a more quiet and relaxed time, then the Riu is for you. We were not disappointed and had a wonderful time here...it is a very classy place. Also a plus is that the ferry to Cozumel is close by for shopping. The town of Playa de Carmen is charming, too.

Top Local Tips for Riviera Maya

Town has better food than resort Xel-Ha is a great take. All inclusive package a must for the day.

water, keep hydrated Be sure to drink some of the bottled water every day, especially if you are drinking alcohol or beer a lot. The water served at the restaurants comes from the large blue filtered water jugs so be sure to have some there.

Shuttle We did not have a shuttle from the airport, so we paid for a shuttle van. Basically it would have been better to take a taxi and pay only $4 more and not have to stop at 10 places to drop people off. Go with the taxi.
