Near and not so near If you can, take a short/medium hike through the Botanical gardens and see native flora and fauna, climb the rather high tree-house steps to the suspension bridge and look over the mangrove swamp and hear (monkeys ?) see wild parrots, iguana etc., see the chicle camp and a few small ruins. If you don't mind a long-ish drive (or take a bus) Tulum and esp. Chichen-Itza are worth the visit. Stop in Valladolid for lunch in the square and have great food at Meson de Marques and see the lovely cathedral.

Playa del Carmen is very touristy with millions of trinket shops and copious restaurants on '5th Ave.' -- Cueva del Chango (cave of the monkey) is a great restaurant with Yucatecan cuisine and lovely setting away from the bustle of the tourist area.

ATMs We recommend that you get money at the airport at the exchange. There are some ATMs in Terminal 3 at the Cancun airport, but were inoperable when we were there. There are ATMs at many of the convenience stores; however, we found that many of them did not work. We used the ATM next to the grocery store on the town square. I know that it's relative, but feel that it was pricey (though standard for ATM usage there). There were charges of almost $5 USD and that wasn't counting what the bank in the States charged (We have found that that's usually between $1 and $2 USD.).
