Unfortunately the service, food and staff do not measure up even remotely to the standards associated with a 5 star resort.
You felt like you are on military timing to get to the timing of the buffets before they close, if you need to get to the snack bar get there early or they will run out of food. Right when you check in you better book your only 3 al a carte meals for the week as they book up rapidly. The a la carte meals felt like it was the same food as the buffet and they just dressed the staff to fit the theme of the restaurant. The Bamboo restaurant (Chinese cuisine) ran out of Wonton soup and believe it or not rice. We did have the best service at this restaurant though. Otherwise the staff seemed not interested or rushed to do anything for you and service was very slow. I only have a separate resort in Puerto Vallarta to compare this too but the service there was far superior despite being less expensive and of lesser profile.
I would recommend paying less for resorts closer to the town of Playa and enjoying from what was described from other travellers as better service and food in general.
For the amount we paid we expected a lot more from the service and cuisine side and this was one of the most expensive resorts we saw in the area.
We have stayed in other 5 star resorts in various countries and this was the weakest we have seen to date. Recommend Barcelo resort or Moon Palace from friends who described their experience.

Top Local Tips for Riviera Maya
The best activities are off property so take some tours While we were there we wanted to go off property and see some other parts of Mexico and we discovered a theme park that is not highly advertised but it should not be missed. The park is called Excaret pronounced (Shker-et) is better than a Disney theme park. Located right in the middle of the jungle on the sea 10 minutes from the resort this place is amazing. You swim with Dolphins and in natural open sea pools they have a natural non man made lazy river that goes through the park in and out of caves that lets you out at the ocean. It is so fun to go in an out of the caves and jungle foilage at the end your journey fihishes at the sea. It takes about 1 hours to go through it. They also got a turtle farm, aqaurium, live animals and shows, petting farm, great beaches, great restauarants, showers and lockers, dolphin swims and encounters, and you will easily spend the entire day there. Make sure to see the Mayan Indian show at 6PM nightly. It is absolutely incredible.
If you want to go to Playa Del Carmon for the day If you want to go to Playa Del Carmon for the day. Its a great shopping area for souveniers and a fun place to just stop at Senior Frogs for a drink or two while your there, Just catch the collectivo bus right infront of the resort. It only costs 2 USA dollars each there, and 2 bucks back. If you take a taxi its 20.00 bucks there and 20.00 bucks back. Its just as safe as a taxi because all those drivers in Mexico drive the same. Its safe!!!! Don't expect a bus, they call it that, but what it really is, is a white van that holds about 14 passengers. Remember where the bus drops you off and at the end of your shopping trip just go back to the same spot and there will buses waiting to take you back to your hotel
Windy in February I have now been to Riviera Maya twice - both trips were during the last two weeks in February. During both visits 6 years apart, I experienced very windy days and evenings. It was so windy this year, that I abandoned the beach the second day because it was too tiring to grip my book with both hands and keep brushing hte sand out of my eyes! Therefore, if you want to spend your time on the beach, perhaps the later half of February is not the best time to book because it seems that just might be windy season!!
