Top Local Tips for Riviera Maya

don't chose this hotel! the 5 star rating is soooo over exagerated! the only thing that is a 5 star at this hotel is the rooms. everything else is soo over rated and sooo inaccurate. If you are looking for a nice hotel, chose something else and don't waste your money and precious time at thise hotel. There are so many other hotels that are far more superior, and so much more fun and enjoyable!

Xel-Ha We went to Xel-Ha twice, once as part of a Xel-Ha/Tulum trip, and once for the whole day. There is too much to do at Xel-Ha to do it in a half day. Floating down the river and snorkelling has to be one of the most amazing activities I have ever experienced on holiday. Note: the food here is not as good as it was at the resort (Iberostar) and one of us did get bad gastro from the salad bar here. Be careful with the buffet.

The Cancun Airport and Rental Cars RENTAL CARS There are lots of rental car agencies with offices in the airport. I have never had a problem with any of them. Picking up a car can take 40 minutes or more but returning it is usually quick and easy. It is common for the rental company to make a blank hard voucher with your card and ask you to sign it. This is in case there is damage done to the car. Be sure to take this voucher with you when you return the vehicle and destroy it. THE AIRPORT Get to the airport at least 2 hours early. You will likely be in line at the ticket counter four 60 to 90 minutes. Bring something for the kids to do while standing there. Don't plan on eating after you get through security as you will likely be making a mad dash for your flight. Even the first class check-in is almost always more than 30 minutes. You will be screened twice. The first time is at the security checkpoint before you get to the gates. The second is as you are about to board your flight. No beverages opened or unopened are allowed on flights leaving Cancun. They search every bag and take every bottle every time. When you arrive in Cancun you are given the bottom of your immigration form back. It is called a tourist card. Keep it. You will need it to leave the country.
