Top Local Tips for Puerto Vallarta
Taxi bargain was no bargain The Book, "Mexico Beach Resorts for Dummies" suggested you could save 30-50% off a taxi fare from the PV airport by walking across the pedestrian overpass and catching a taxi from there, rather than in front of the airport. This is not true. We paid $30US for a one-way ride for 2 to Mismaloya in a shoddy taxi (I tried to negotiate and my Spanish is pretty good, but the driver insited this was the rate and it did seem like a long drive), only to discover that the standard rate, in newer cabs, is $19.
Avoid the mess at the Airport The airport is so confusing!!! When you get done with customs, you will have to walk thru the timeshare sales people. Once you make your way thru them, DO NOT GO OUTSIDE or GO with the guys asking you if you want a CAB! You need to basically make a U-Turn to your right, and go back down the other side of the hall way. There you will find 2 ATMS ( the best way to get your pesos) and a ticket booth where you buy a ticket for a cab to your hotel. There are set prices depending on where you are going so just buy a ticket and then go out the doors. Someone will take your ticket and get you in a cab.
Ignore the timeshare people in the airport and run to the taxi stand outside As you leave the baggage claim area, there seems like quite a few people there to help you get a ride to your hotel. Ignore them all. They are selling timeshares. Just go directly outside where you will find taxis and vans. Negotiate the rate and have an easy ride to the hotel
