Top Local Tips for Puerto Vallarta

Day trip to Boca de Tomatlan Get a bus to Boca de Tomatlan, 30 minutes south of Vallarta, then hike south from there for an hour to Playa Las Animas, which is only accessible by water taxi or trail. Beautiful, sparse,l beach with a few little palapa restaurants. Ask a local about where to hike, because the trail entrance is not really marked (but signs to las animas line the trail once you're on it). By going to boca and hiking in, it will save you the $25 roundtrip water taxi ride from PV. But definitely at least take a water taxi back to Boca from Las Animas... for $6 its pretty thrilling!

fun beach towns We have enjoyed visiting beach towns to the north of Puerto Vallarta. Punta de Mita, Salulita, and San Francisco. We rented a car both times that we have been to PV and if you are adventurous and like low-key beaches, seeing real Mexico, and cheap food and drink I would suggest visiting these towns. All of these towns are within 45 minutes from PV by car.
