My wife and I stayed at the "Royal Porto Real" last April. This was our first stay here. We wanted something 5 star and closer to the ferry to Cozumel than we had been staying in the past. It was absolutely beautiful in a different sort of way then the other hotels along the Maya Riveria.
First of all, before I go on,the WHOLE place is in white marble. Top to bottom and front to back. It's like being in a railroad baron's mansion. The entrance is three tiered from the street of the end steet it is on (our beach is at the end) and impressive with sitting balconies and the large brass multi leveled fountain midway up as the focal point of wedding pictures and its gorgeous lit up at night
The Great Room just off the open and very comfortable lobby was immense with a very high ceiling. It was circular with a walkway around the second floor with the show halls, offices, shops and the internet cafe looking down on the huge open room.
The queen size four poster beds along one wall with romantic chiffon drapes for privacy and internet access plus a fully packed bar of tanned patrons watching a baseball game by another wall, along with two regulation pool tables along another wall and a stage for the band at night along another wall are absolutely literally lost among the dozens and dozens of soft overstuffed chairs placed in groups and dozens of beautiful soft lamps on marbel coffee tabes that are perfect for reading or soft conversation and drinks with friends. Everyone gravitates there at night.
The waterfall that starts in the Great Room and falls to the small pool outside in the center garden grounds is always a wonder to watch as you take the half moon stairs on either side of the waterfall going to and from the beach.
The room was absolutely beautiful with marble pillars in my room! I thought I was in Rome. The hot tub in the room was outstanding! GREAT idea gentlemen! I usually brig my own couple of pillows because of a minor leg injury. No need here! EACH bed has SIX huge fluffy and out of this world comfortable pillows. You don't want to get out of bed in the morning. Trust me.
We had a pool view but I though that the veranda was a bit small. Two was a crowd. If one wanted to hang out in the hammock it was a little tight for another to sit and read at the table. Forget a card game for four. I had also never seen a full bar with quarts, not nips, in the room. Top shelf too!! You could get into some serious trouble before ever leaving the room. We left that alone even though it was on the house.
The free form pool is fantastic with the bridge for people headed to the beach being pictured in many travel magazines. It has the usual 18" of shallow water all around for lounging in your chair in nice cool water. The pool is no more than 5' deep anywhere. The two hot tubs were in constant use but it was warm enough already. I never set foot in them. The swim up bar was right next to the water vollyball net so that was very convenient. The many different areas of nooks and crannys of the pool made it a favorite for lovers at the very quiet sections. Waitresses all around the pool.
It was the beach that blew me away. All along the edge of the seawall and ON the beach are four poster queen size beds with the same chiffon full length drapes. There are rows and rows of these. I couldn't believe it. All you have to do is reserve one. In front of them are a dozen or more rows of loungs chairs with a shaded area overhead and in groups of 2 and 4. There has to be about 500 or more. It was never even close to full. That's how many lounges and beds there are.
After THAT you still have 30 or 40 yards of beach before you go into the water. Many choose the cooler sand near the water and plop a lounge in 8" of sea water. Topless tanning was everywhere.
I had never, ever seen a huge dugout canoe on the beach constantly filled by beach staff with buckets of ice cubes, bottled water, sandwiches, bananas, plums and other fruit before I came here. You are never more then 10 yards from a canoe filled with goodies. You won't starve here.
The surf was calm and just right for my wife who is not a strong swimmer. Thank you Cozumel island for blocking the rough water. Also no undertow that I could feel or see in the whole week.
Now to the food. We only ate in five (5) of the (10) ten restaurants there but the buffet style one near the waterfall was our favorite. They even cooked a 35 pound Mahi Mahi I cought one day. It fed dozens and everyone had a great time that night at the restaurant. Thanks guys!
Maria Maria restaurant across the street in our sister hotel was not that special in my opinion. Nice but not great. Can't beat the location though. Right on the street looking across at your hotel with lots of interesting people walking by if you have a rail seat.
Now the downsides of the hotel.
The room service must have had us on the end of the list every day because our room was regularly not made up until 3PM or later. We asked that it be done earlier but it continued for another day or two. I spoke with not only the housekeeping supervisor (first time) but the manager (second time) Everying was resolved and they apologized every day after that. When they saw mw they came to me to ask if everything was OK with the room. LOL One day they showed up at 8:30AM!!!
The jet ski was $65.00 for only 1/2 hour. Pretty steep. I didn't para-sail but I watched. It's one of those reel you out and reel you in which is normal I guess but they sure didn't stay long at the rope's end. Once you get to full extension they start bringing you in. Kinda sort in my opinion (also $65 I think) compared to other places that let you fly at full extension for a while to take pictures and take you up and down the coast in front of your place. Short & pricy.
Fishing was great and I would recommend the boat Moonshadow II. Great captain and hard working crew. Most importantly, they catch fish. Big fish.
The official pool hall and game room in the hotel has numerous pool & pin pong tables, LCD TV and a free snack bar with a fully loaded self serve quart liquor bar. You could eat dinner in there AND it is open 24 hours and the food changed every four or five hours with a different menue. We went there evry night at 1 or 2 AM for pool, eats and a nightcap.
The staff was vey courteous and helpful all week. Somehow many of them knew you by name. Very friendly. I'm headed back in two weeks for more Black Marlin fishing. Lets get another nig one Capt.! Superb hotel. Truely a 5 star hotel
