Top Local Tips for Playa Del Carmen

Luggage Tags & Packing Tip Whenever I travel, I print a small card with my name, destination, dates, flight number(s), and hotel info and insert it into the luggage tag holder. I put my office address on the other side (nobody needs to know I’m not at home), and flip the card to show the office address for the return trip. When my suitcase appeared on the luggage carousel in Cancun, there was a large handwritten tag attached that said “NO TAG – RUSH.” I was glad to see my bag, but curious as well. Upon inspection, I noticed that the airline baggage tag was not attached to my suitcase. However, my ID tag was still attached, and I think that helped get my bag to my destination. I believe having my destination info on the tag helped route my bag correctly on this trip, thereby avoiding a frustrating start to a wonderful vacation. Also, when traveling with my husband, we like to distribute our clothing, etc. between each other’s bags in case one bag gets lost.

Yaxche Maya Cuisine Restaurant -- overrated After reading about Yaxche Maya Cuisine Restaurant, we decided to dine there on our last night in Playa. While the food was acceptable, it was nothing special and very commercialized. We were hoping for a more authentic meal, but the food seemed to be adapted to American/Canadian palates. (We spoke to a couple of locals the following morning, and they agreed with our opinion.) The restaurant itself is beautiful, but someone mopped the floor near our table three times during our meal (no, we had not spilled anything), so we could smell bleach and cleaner more than our food. The dinner was okay, but we would not return. Go have the lobster & filet mignon at Los Rancheros instead -- not authentic Mayan, but not claiming to be either.

Snorkeling Tours We booked a snorkeling tour from some vendor on the street--who looked reputable--and were disappointed. We should have known better--but made a hasty decision (last minute). If this is what you are interested in doing--check in the Frommers book--he makes some suggestions of places to use when booking. Our place (forgot the name) said it would cost more once we got to Cozumel and the trip included "beverages" and promised a "glass bottom boat". Well, they had ONE corona for 12 people, a large jug of water with plastic cups, and cans of what they claimed were margaritas--I didn't have anything. The glass bottom boat reminded me of the SS Minnow -- post "weather started getting rough" timeframe (maybe not that bad--but not what we were expecting)...and to top it off it WAS CHEAPER once we got to Cozumel. Again--check in the Frommers book (available at Barnes n Noble, etc.) or the Dummies Guide to Mexico Beach Resorts..... We did take a day trip to Xel-Ha and like that a lot.
