Top Local Tips for Playa Del Carmen

Mexican Newbie Just returned from Playa last week and must preface this by saying I'm not a big hotel/motel fan anywhere and never been to Mexico before. So, if it's you're first Mexican trip, be prepared for some culture shock. Unless you're shelling out big bucks for Hotels/Motels they are on a different caliber than the US (exchange rate: 3.5 US stars = 2 Mexican stars). At The Colibri (no exception to any other older type Playa accommodations), I stayed in a bungalow, smaller room, no air or balcony, while friends stayed in larger rooms with air. My first impression was - skuzzy road side motel, metal room doors and couldn't imagine stepping into the shower. After a couple of days I was feeling more comfortable realizing I hadn't seen bugs anywhere in Playa. The maid did a fine job of cleaning each day (smell of cleansers in the air) but everything in the bungalow was dark & tiled (floors, counters, walls, etc.) and old. Beach sand blended seamlessly with the room tile. Outlets, if working, only accommodate one plug-in and the furniture looks like JH shop class stuff covered with loud paint. The Colibri is right on the beach and serves good food throughout the day creating a pleasant beach, bar & snacks atmosphere. On the last night I reported someone going through my locked room while I was out. Fortunately nothing was missing and reported it to the front desk the next day. The Colibri provides room safes which I highly recommend putting to use. On the other hand, I would leave tip envelopes for the maid each day which she went out of her way to ignore and had a hard time passing it along to her. Maids do a very good job cleaning and are very careful to stay out of your personal belongings. Overall, I had a great time and would return again now over the first timer's culture shock.
