Top Local Tips for Patzcuaro

Patzcuaro is an "easy" city with much to offer Weather can vary; you're in the mountains. Last year, we had some hail and rain. This year was clear, bright and sunny with warm days and tolerably cool evenings. Bring layers--or better yet, buy a lovely wool gabones planchas in the market. Also, plan enough days to enjoy the many sights in Patzcuaro (Basilica, museums, Casa de Once Patios, the trolley car, the Friday morning ceramic market in Plaza San Francisco, the biblioteca, the view from the Posada de la Basilica restaurant bar, the Boca Negra mercado's handicrafts, and the Dance of the Old Men in the Gran Plaza) and also enjoy day trips around the lake, to the island of Janitzio, the copper crafting town of Santa Clara, the mask town of Tocuaro, and the commanding ruins at Tzintzuntzan.

Patzcuaro offers days of activity Allow enough days to see all of Patzcuaro's many cultural, architectural and shopping opportunities, plus day trips to Santa Clara (copper crafting town), Tocuaro (mask-making town), Ihuatzio and Tzintzuntzan (Tarascon ruins), the lake drive and the island of Janitzio. Weather can vary; you're in the mountains. We've had warm sunny days, with cooler evenings, and we've had hail/rain and cold. Bring layers, or better yet, buy wool gabones planchas in the market as a Michoacan memory.

The cuisine is awesome The cuisine and the architecture are the real stars of this little town. This isn't the kind of place that has tons of things. Its a good place if you want to come and savor the charm of a very beautiful small colonial town. We stayed 3 days and two nights and that was enough for us. The market is good fun! Have dinner at Dona Pacas and try the chipura (sp?)-- a local beef stew. Delicious!
