Excellent Local Guide for Oaxaca We recommend using Roberto Gavidia as a local guide around Oaxaca. He is knowledgeable and his English is very good. Roberto put together some half-day itineraries for us to the surrounding villages that included visits to markets, sights, and especially to the studios and homes of the finest handicrafts artists in the area. We met the artists and saw personalized demonstrations of their work and craft. We never felt any pressure or obligation to buy from them (although we DID buy from several). Wait to see the best work before buying anything in the tourist shops or market. Roberto also took us to local village restaurants where the food was both excellent, native, and trustworthy. Robert's expertise and efforts cetainly helped make out trip special. You can reach him through his website (google him).

Incredible Guide in Oaxaca Region! On a recent trip to Oaxaca City, we hired Juan Montes Lara as a guide for 2 day trips, which included Monte Alban, Mitla, Teotitlan, and many stops along the way. He is an incredibly knowledgeable, smart, thoughtful man, and our time with him was the highlight of our trip. We learned a tremendous amount from him, not only about the wonderful places he took us to and explained in fascinating depth, but also about the reality of life in Mexico. His English is perfect, his van comfortable, and he is a pleasure to be with. We can't recommend him highly enough. He is well worth the reasonable fees he charges. He's a once-in-a-lifetime guide.
