Shopping in Oaxaca There are many small shops all over the downtown area, for pottery, weaving, silver, and arts and crafts. But there is even better shopping in the nearby villages - better prices and more selection. The large Juarez and Abastos markets are colorfful and have a wide selection of goods.

Getting from here to there... Walking around Oaxaca day or night was safe and non-threatening. Although there are many people selling items on the street, there are no pan handlers and sellers are not overly aggressive. We walked from the Zocola to the Casa each night but if too tired to walk there are taxis readily available at reasonable prices. One day, in the Zocola, there was a police presence but no one seemed to be bothered by it. Local families and tourists continued to play and cross through without concern. Wear good walking shoes to handle cobblestone streets and uneven footing. Not many people speak much English but are good natured to guess what you want.

Oaxaca Oaxaca is not only beautiful but we found it very safe. And it is a very important and interesting part of Mexico. The 6 hour trip from Mexico City on a deluxe bus was very comfortable and pleasant. The cost was only $45.00 per person. It is worth going this way and seeing the amazing countryside.
