Top Local Tips for Morelia
El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Many travelers use Morelia as a base for their excursion to El Rosario. We were traveling from Mexico City and chose to stop on our way to Morelia rather than backtracking. We arrived midday. It was not crowded, the day was sunny and warm, and the butterflies were in abundance. After the town of Ocampo, the approach to El Rosario is a seemingly endless road - paved with gravel and stones and extremely rough. From the parking lot there is a fairly easy path leading to the entrance of the sanctuary - then begins a hike of about a mile uphill. Some work has begun to finish the path with pavers and in the beginning, there are sets of steps followed by short a plateau leading to the next set of steps...all the while climbing upward. It helps to be physically fit, but due to the high elevation, your heart rate may increase and you may short of breath. There are numerous places on the way up to sit and rest. It is not necessary to hire a guide! The path will lead you to the butterflies.
