Driving in Mexico City is not for the faint of heart I rented a car since my friends and I were traveling outside the city a lot. I brought my Garmin GPS with me and purchased the Mexico City maps. This city has way too many cars and is absolutely lawless in terms of traffic rules. If you do drive you have to be bold and aggressive... you HAVE to be. If you're not, you'll get crushed. I would not have been able to get around within the city at all without the GPS. It is large and labrynthine and the road system evolved from a time before automobiles so it's not a car friendly place. EXPECT to sit in traffic for hours and hours. The only way to avoid it is to take buses. Taxis do better because they know their way around better, but this isn't guaranteed. I was in a cab that got hopelessly lost looking for a friend's address. The guy had been a driver for 10 years and even he got messed up. Only rent a car on a day you are planning on leaving the city. Do not rent a car to get around in the city.
