Top Local Tips for Mexico City

Take the subway, not the taxi Before we went, we heard a lot of stories about taxi robberies. At first we thought they were just urban myths. We also worried about the safety of the subway. Upon arrival, even local Mexicans warned us against hailing cabs on the street. Instead, they recommended that we either call sitio taxis or take the subway. On their advice, we took the subway, which was dirt cheap (2 pesos per ride flat) and got us where we want. It wasn't the cleanest subway we've been on (but already much cleaner than new york's) and it very very very crowded, but it gets you from point A to point B efficiently and safely. Gentlemen: note that the subway has female-only cars during rush hour. We accidently entered one and my husband was stared at by all the ladies the whole ride.

You need more time ... Due to traffic and the size of the city .. you need to plan more time than you think to get to see all the sites .. get from one side of the city to the other is not a quick trip. Plan carefully and maximize your time in each area. Get a tour guide so that you don't miss any of the hidden gems the city has to offer .. and there are plenty that we wouldn't have seen if it weren't for our fantastic guide.
