Top Local Tips for Mexico City
Don't take the hotel taxi The taxis which leave direct from your hotel and generally more than twice as expensive as those on the street. We took the white cars with a red line around them and the trip back to the airport cost us about £4 where as the car the hotel would like you to use cost around £12.
Use public transportation. Subways were crowded, but felt safe. Busses were very crowded and the drivers drove fast but skillfully. One cab driver took advantage of us, but another lowered the fare because he didn't have the change. Negotiate before you get in or make sure the taxi has a meter! We didn't take any tours. We just used the metro and busses to get places on our own and we were fine.
GrayLine pickup/return I found that arranging pickup/return with Gray Line tours worked for me. It was $27 roundtrip plus $5 for pickup/return between 10am and 7 pm. It was nice to be picked up and dropped off at airport wihtout headache of finding a taxi.
