The hotel is striking architecturally, and the present management are to be complimented on the way they have kept the space's integrity while including modern touches, like the lighting and water bar.

I stayed for over 3 months while working In Mexico City, and the rooms are fine.

What I really didn't appreciate was the terrible attitude of the management.

There was a lamp in my room - nothing that fancy. You might expect to pay $50 in IKEA for something similar. I went to adjust it one day, and the whole top of the lamp came off in my hand. Metal fatigue - the lamps was pretty old, had clearly been fixed many times, tape on the power cord etc. And the b*stards charged me for it! Despite my patiently trying to explain the concepts of wear-and-tear and metal fatigue, and pointing out that the part that had come off had clearly been glued back on before, they just weren't interested. They wanted the money. So, next time I am in Mexico City, it won't be to the old Camino Real.

And their fountain out front looks like a washing machine. And the roof leaks when it rains. And there is a loud clanking noise outside some of the room all night long. And at least 2 of my colleagues got food poisoning.

Top Local Tips for Mexico City

Take the Touribus The best way to see Mexico City. Take the Touribus and get off and back on at any of about 24 stops. Be sure to see the Anthropological Museum. New, impressive, could take all day. Great in depth review of Mexican history. Good restaurant on premises and clean restrooms. Chapultepec Castle is also a very worthwhile stop.

Emilio at the Majestic is a great Guide It is almost worth staying at the Majestic just to be sure that one can have Emilio as one's guide. He knows everything about the city, and also seems to know everyone: all twenty million of them!

hotel cars v. radiotaxis Expect to pay at least double when using the hotelcars. Alternative is to call a radiotaxi or catch one at many offical spots around (agree on price beforehand unless taximeter is used).
