Top Local Tips for Merida
Dancing in the Streets Don't miss the weekly opportunities to dance in the streets. Every Saturday and Sunday nights the streets around the zocalo are closed. The restaurants set up the chairs and tables in the streets. Musical groups set up every half block or so. People come from everywhere to dine and dance beneath the starts. The areas closed off are Calles 62 and 60 between Calles 57 and 61. If you aren't a Latin dancer, it's still excellent people watching and it's free.

Romantic Dinner at La Bella Epoca This restaurant is great for a romantic dinner. If you can get one of the small tables that are on one of their balconies which jut out over the street from the main restaurant, you'll get a great view with your good food and fine service. I've eaten there several times over the years and never been disappointed. The local Yucatec dish, Pibil (food cooked in plantain leaves) is wonderful. You can choose from various meats and vegetables and even order a plate for two. The local beer, Leon, is a darker brew and quite good.
