Top Local Tips for Merida

A day in Merida If you are visiting the Haciendas, you will probably fly into Merida may wonder about spending some time there. The colonial part of the city is very nice, and it takes on an entirely new flavor in the evening with lots of live music, dancing in the streets, nice dining and more. On Sundays, the streets are closed in the center of the city and the lack of traffic makes for a great walking experience. I would suggest a full day in Merida on your first visit, but frankly we enjoyed the Haciendas so much that we wish we had spent the incoming and outgoing days there instead of in Merida city. Also, the drive from the center of Merida to the Haciendas is nearly twice as far if you start from mid-city vs. the airport, which is located on the outskirts of town. The driving is also much easier and less stressful going directly from the airport to the Haciendas, but don't drive that route at night.

Hertz Airport Return Location The one thing that had me frustrated right at the end of the vacation was the location to drop the Hertz rental car at the airport. You have to park it at the terminal and turn the keys in at the desk in the terminal. Along the road leading to the terminal are some other car rental returns, I assumed Hertz would have one as well. Nope.

Get a good map! And bring a cell phone that works in Mexico. We were glad we had one when we got so lost that we got pulled over by the police for going the wrong way down a one way street in the town of Izamal. Luckily I called the manager of Hacienda San Jose and he was able to translate and talk the policeman out of writing us up and giving us a ticket.
